The Blue Angels practice at their home base, Pensacola Naval Air Station, near Pensacola Pass on the Florida panhandle. Just west of the pass is Redfish point. Between is a perfect anchorage for a south wind, which is where we are hunkered down behind the dunes. Before the upcoming storm, we take advantage of a perfect day to sail our 9ft Hood designed dinghy with a Norman Cressy sail out for a ride. We call her Lil’ Al. Lucky for us, “The Blues” practice day was this day! What a fun time we had, fighter jets soaring right above us while we were sailing in the bay. Thrilling. Once ashore, our path was interrupted by the nesting grounds of the shore birds. On the east end of the nesting restricted area we found a break in the dunes, probably from hurricane Sally, that gave us an easy path to the Gulf of Mexico to sit on the beach and listen to the surf.

The Old Navarino castle is a 13th-century Frankish fortress near Pylos, Greece. It is one of two castles guarding the strategic bay on which it sits; the other is the Ottoman-built New Navarino fortress. In juxtaposition with the latter, it is frequently known simply as Palaiokastro or Paliokastro.

Sailed San Francisco Bay July 4th weekend. I had planned on heading out the Golden Gate and running north but had electrical issues that forced me back to port for repairs.

We are extending our wheelhouse so that we can have a full cockpit enclosure AND move the mainsheet from the top of the aft cabin to above the wheelhouse (better safety and a better sheeting angle). This is the first prototype frame (will extend to the full cockpit width) so that Jane can start making the rest of the soft enclosure. We are now living aboard our Rival 38 Centre Cockpit full-time while finishing a refit so we can launch ASAP.
