In September 2024 I visited the Azores and went on a sailcruise for around seven days. We had to deal with quiet strong winds so we couldnt visit all the famous divespots around the island of Horta and Pico. Nevertheless we had a good week of divinig and had the pleasure to enjoy a huge baitball on the last day at sea. My first voyage to a foreign country was the 24-hour sail from Cape Canaveral, Florida, to West End on Grand Bahama. I had been on many other boats that had gone through clearing procedures, but I had never been the responsible one walking up the dock with all the ship’s papers and the crews' passports. The route to the Bahamas was a 133-mile passage that took SOULMATES southeast across the Gulf Stream. Most cruisers make this trip by heading south along the Florida coast to West Palm Beach where they hang out until the wind goes calm so that they can motor the 60 miles across the Gulf Stream. This plan calls for a short crossing in calm seas. But SOULMATES is a boat that likes to SAIL. Contrary to the dockside chorus of “local experts,” we took off in a 15-20 knot northerly that pushed us directly down the course—and quickly. SOULMATES reveled in the waves as we rode on a broad reach under a single reef and a No. 4 Genoa. The second part of my trip was an 127-mile passage from West End to Nassau. We started out with the full-sized jib and full main and when the wind picked up after the sun went down, we tucked in a reef, which was shaken out in the late morning of the second day. Once again, we set off in the early afternoon for the 127-mile passage from West End, around Great Stirrup, and then on to Nassau. It was a full beat for the 65-mile leg from West End to Great Stirrup. All night long, it felt like we were on the highway for cruise ships heading to and from Nassau. Luckily, we could see them on AIS long before they were visible with the naked eye. With all their cabin lights blazing, they were so bright that it was hard to make out their running lights. Just before Great Stirrup, we had to make four tacks to get around the point. In my less-than-alert state, we got within one-quarter-of-a-mile of one of the behemoths — I had a hard time visualizing her course. Radar would have helped, as would more sleep. Once around Great Stirrup, the wind faired, and we could just cracked the sheets, helping us make better time to Nassau.

This week on Sailing GOAT, we leave the sweet chaos of Poros behind and head toward one of the most mythical landmarks of the Mediterranean: The Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion. But of course, we couldn't just sail there… we had to race there—against our friends on SV WOLO. ⛵️ Boat vs Boat With full sails up and wind on our side, we challenged SV WOLO to an old-fashioned buddy boat race. The conditions were perfect: a sporty breeze, blue skies, and the island-dotted Aegean to make it a sailing dream. It was fast, fun, and just the right amount of competitive (okay, maybe we really wanted to win 😅). 🏛 Arrival at the Temple of Poseidon As the sun started its descent, we rounded the famous Cape Sounion, where the ancient Temple of Poseidon stands guard over the Aegean Sea. Built in the 5th century BC, this temple was the last sight of land for sailors leaving Athens—and a place to honor the god of the sea for a safe return. Sailing right beneath the cape and dropping anchor in the shadow of 2,500 years of maritime history was a powerful moment for both of us. Hier soir, nous sommes partis en annexe pour aller admirer le feu d'artifice de Cannes depuis la mer. L’ambiance était magique : les lumières colorées se reflétaient sur l’eau calme, et le spectacle prenait une toute autre dimension vue depuis le large. Après ce moment féerique, nous avons repris la navigation à bord de notre catamaran. Et là, surprise incroyable : au lever du jour, nous avons aperçu notre toute première baleine ! Elle est apparue à quelques dizaines de mètres du bateau, majestueuse et paisible. Un instant suspendu, gravé à jamais dans nos mémoires.

Welcome back aboard Moor R & R! Episode 13. This week we’re off exploring Shaw Island and Thomas Island, and what an adventure it turned out to be! We took the tender out to Maya Cave, an incredible natural formation — definitely one of those wow moments. The best time to visit is around mid to high tide, when you can glide right in and really take in its beauty. Next, we explored the creek system near Saba Bay and walked across to the other side of Shaw Island — such a peaceful and scenic spot. As the winds picked up, we moved around to Burning Point for a bit of shelter before heading over to Thomas Island. Thomas absolutely blew us away — from hiking the rock on Little Tom Island to walking across the main island and looking out over those crystal-clear blue waters, every moment was breathtaking. With a break in the weather, it’s finally time to cast off from La Ciotat and continue our voyage west along the French coast. It’s a very early start for us—alarms ringing before 4am—before settling in for a 14-hour passage toward a small marina in Carnon. It may not be classic Instagram territory, but Carnon turns out to be a hidden gem: a calm, protected berth, friendly locals, and cafés and ice creams just steps from Helios. Exactly what tired sailors need after a long day at sea. The next morning, we head out for a celebratory breakfast for Richard’s birthday before pointing Helios toward the famous Cap d’Agde—known worldwide for its huge nudist village and sprawling beach. For us, though, it’s another fantastic marina stopover with all the chandleries we’ve been hoping for. And perhaps… a little visit to the village? That’s for next week.
