As 2025 comes to an end, the entire Lagoon team would like to warmly thank our Lagoon family for another year spent together. As we look ahead to 2026, we remain committed to our ambition: designing catamarans that embrace travel, sharing, and the joy of sailing, alongside those who place their trust in us. Wishing you a wonderful holiday season, and we look forward to seeing you back on the water soon! _______________________________________________________ CATAMARAN INNOVATORS SINCE 1984 Lagoon was formed in pursuit of connection – with ourselves, our loved ones and the world around us. By bringing the human experience to the 7 seas, we’ve been able to unleash an unbridled sense of curiosity and instinctual need for quality since 1984. Something we wouldn’t have accomplished without a collective passion for spectacular destinations and even better journeys getting there. As confirmed sailors, we all know that our boats have to be fast, comfortable and safe: seaworthy. We build them based on our love of the sea and the constant aim of good-quality work. We design them as if we were the future owners. As shipbuilders and sailors, it is part of our logic. Crooked Island was far from boring. We make the most of our short stay on this quiet island by exploring the abandoned Bird Rock Lighthouse. A hop in the crystal clear water has our 3 year old daughter snorkeling non-stop to spot lobsters and fish. But the charm of Landrail Point Settlement comes from its people. Kind and generous they offer us rides and help us in any which way they can. Plus to my (Alex) excitement I get to finally buy fresh fruits and vegetables after 2 months away from a grocery store. We even go on a mangrove dinghy adventure as we explore The Bight of Crooked and Acklins. Filmed June 2025. Should you really cram ASA 101-104 sailing certifications into one week? Captain James explains why this popular offering from some sailing schools is actually setting students up to fail - and what to do instead. TIMESTAMPS: 00:00 - Introduction: The Question Everyone Asks 01:00 - What Each ASA Level Actually Covers 02:30 - ASA 101: Basic Sailing Terminology 03:15 - ASA 102: Building Sailing Skills 03:45 - ASA 103: Becoming Competent Crew 04:30 - ASA 104: Bareboat Skipper Certification 05:00 - The Reality: Zero to Skipper in One Week? 06:00 - Why Sailing Requires Experience, Not Just Knowledge 07:30 - The Cognitive Overload Problem 09:00 - What Happens When You Rush 10:30 - The Right Way to Get Certified 12:00 - Different Learning Paths That Actually Work 13:30 - Final Advice: Don't Rush Your Journey WHAT YOU'LL LEARN: - What ASA 101, 102, 103, and 104 actually cover - Why cramming all levels in one week doesn't work - The difference between knowledge and experience - How sailing is like flying - it requires hours and muscle memory - The cognitive overload trap of too-fast learning - Multiple pathways to proper certification - How to pace your sailing education correctly - Why some sailing schools offer this (and why we don't) THE ASA LEVELS EXPLAINED: **ASA 101 - Basic Keelboat:** Learning boat terminology, parts, basic sailing concepts. This is "what is a boat?" level - pulpits, guardrails, sheets, halyards, and essential vocabulary. **ASA 102 - Basic Coastal Cruising:** Building on 101 skills, developing competency. Relatively new certification that bridges the gap. **ASA 103 - Basic Coastal Cruising:** Becoming truly competent crew. Mastering knots, crewing skills, being an effective number two on the boat. **ASA 104 - Bareboat Cruising:** Becoming a skipper who can safely take out friends and family. Full responsibility, decision-making, emergency handling. THE PROBLEM WITH ONE WEEK: You're essentially saying: "I want to go from knowing nothing about boats to being a completely competent skipper in 7 days." That's not education - that's setting yourself up to fail. WHY IT DOESN'T WORK: 🧠 **Cognitive Overload** - Your brain shuts down when overwhelmed ⏰ **No Time for Muscle Memory** - Sailing requires physical practice 🎯 **Missing the Experience Factor** - Decision-making comes from hours on the water ⚠️ **Safety Concerns** - Real skippers handle emergencies, not just perfect conditions 📚 **Knowledge ≠ Skill** - Understanding physics doesn't mean you can sail SAILING IS LIKE FLYING: Just like pilots need flight hours, sailors need time on the water. It's: - Science (physics of sailing) - Art (decision-making and intuition) - Sport (muscle memory and physical skills) - Experience (handling the unexpected) THE RIGHT WAY TO GET CERTIFIED: **Option 1: Progressive Learning** - Do ASA 101 locally or with friends - Come to Caribbean/Croatia for 103/104 - Space out your learning over months **Option 2: Foundational Course + Practice** - Take a comprehensive beginner course - Sail with experienced friends - Return for advanced certification **Option 3: Immersive but Realistic** - Take ASA 103/104 over 7-10 days (not cramming 101-104) - Focus on one level at a time - Allow time for practice and absorption **Option 4: Multi-Trip Approach** - First trip: ASA 101/103 - Practice and sail with others - Return trip: ASA 104 - Build confidence between trips FILMING LOCATION: Grand Case, St. Martin - one of our favorite Caribbean bays with excellent restaurants and protected anchorage WHO THIS VIDEO IS FOR: - Anyone researching ASA certification - People comparing sailing school offerings - Beginners wondering about learning timeline - Sailors considering accelerated programs - Anyone who values safety over speed RED FLAGS TO WATCH FOR: ⚠️ Schools promising "zero to skipper in 7 days" ⚠️ Programs that rush through fundamentals ⚠️ Courses that prioritize certification over competency ⚠️ Any program that doesn't emphasize experience THE BOTTOM LINE: If you want to learn to sail - awesome! Do it. Just don't rush it. Take your time, enjoy the process, and work with instructors who prioritize your actual competency over just handing you a certificate. ► We (finally) got the chance to go out on the famous Ultima 55, the powercat that turns heads on the pontoons with its ultra-trendy design. ► This new model, the first in the Ultima range, is characterized by a modest beam of 18’4” (5.6 m) and a very specific design that incorporates a steeply sloping and inverted front to the coachroof, an inverted deck sheer, and lastly, angled bows. ► Like all Sunreef models, the luxurious interiors can be customized on request. As for the outdoor living spaces, these offer a spacious cockpit, sunbathing areas, and a swimming platform. ► With the standard powertrain, we reached 36 knots and discovered a powercat that turns on the level, lifts efficiently on its foils - especially on flat seas. In this video we break down the real annual cost of cruising on our sailboat, based on our own experience living aboard in the Mediterranean for 9 years. There’s a lot of talk online about “cheap” or “expensive” boat life, but very little real-world detail. So we’ve put together our actual yearly cruising budget, including fuel, marinas, communications, consumables, and the many hidden costs people don’t always mention. Our typical annual cruising cost comes to around €5,300 per year, but that number can vary depending on where you cruise, how often you use marinas, and how much work you do yourself. In this video we also look at: • Marina costs around the Mediterranean • Fuel prices in different countries • Food cost comparisons • Insurance requirements • Cruising taxes and hidden fees • Residency and visa considerations This is not a dream-world estimate—this is a real cruiser’s budget. Our typical annual costs include: • Winter marina • Fuel and water • Consumables and maintenance • Communications and apps • Safety gear • Check-in fees and cruising taxes Total annual cost: about €5,300 ⸻ If you’re thinking about buying a boat, retiring aboard, or cruising the Med, this should give you a realistic starting point. ‘Lost Horizon’ is a 2007 Archambault 32 Grand Surprise listed exclusively for sale with YOTI on Sydney Harbour. https://www.yoti.com.au/listing/archambault-32-grand-surprise-lost-horizon Hailing from the world-renowned French shipyard, Archambault yachts are optimised for IRC rules, delivering a proven track record in both offshore and inland regattas. The Grand Surprise 32 was conceived with a singular, dual-purpose mission: to be fast yet functional. ‘Lost Horizon’ embodies this philosophy perfectly. Offered in true turnkey condition, she invites her new owner to simply step on board and cast off. Her maintenance history is exemplary, featuring new standing rigging (2024), a Volvo Penta 13hp engine installed in 2018 (rebuilt December 2025), and fresh antifoul in December 2025. On deck, the open cockpit—complemented by a deck-mounted traveller and tiller steering—creates a seamless workspace for racing or an expansive lounging area for weekend escapes. Her powerful sail plan is tempered by easy handling, featuring a deep keel, single backstay and a retractable carbon bowsprit for effortless asymmetric downwind thrills. For the ultra-competitive sailor, an aluminium spinnaker pole is included to fly symmetrical kites. Below deck, the interior is simple yet functional. She provides comfortable accommodation for four, including a forward berth with a privacy screen and a chemical toilet under the fill-in. The salon features a galley area ready to be tailored for longer voyages. ‘Lost Horizon’ is the purest expression of sailing: fast, fun, and remarkably easy. In this episode of our sailboat refit, we tackle the prep work for installing new LED lighting throughout the boat, and like most projects on a refit, it turned into more work than expected. To start, we removed two stainless steel light strips in the salon—each holding eight fixtures—and enlarged every mounting hole to fit the new lights. For this, we tried a new tool: a Vevor punch-out tool, which made quick, clean work of resizing the holes and turned out to be a game changer for this kind of job. From there, we worked our way around the perimeter of the salon, widening additional light cutouts and even removing a hanging cabinet to gain access and properly modify the openings. With the holes prepped, we installed new wire harnesses throughout the interior, setting the stage for a clean and reliable lighting system. The cockpit lights got the same treatment, where we used fish tape to run new wiring through tight spaces. The most challenging part of the entire project was feeding wires for the salon’s perimeter lights—tight, hard-to-reach areas that required patience, a flexible fish tape, and a grabber tool to finally get everything in place. This episode is a real look at the behind-the-scenes work required for upgrading sailboat lighting, including cutting, wiring, and problem-solving in confined spaces. It’s not glamorous, but it’s a critical step toward making the boat feel functional, comfortable, and liveable again. With all wiring run and holes prepped, and new LED lights installed, we’re finally ready to reinstall the ceiling panels and bring the interior back together—and that’s a huge milestone after months of teardown. If you’re into sailboat refits, marine electrical projects, DIY boat upgrades, or LED lighting installs, this episode walks through the process, tools, and lessons learned along the way. ⛵💡 00:00 Intro to project 00:33 Channel intro 00:51 Remove stainless steel sheets 01:19 Vevor punch-out tool 04:23 Enlarge holes in wood supports 06:22 Prep lights for installation 07:59 Build wiring harnesses 09:01 Reinstall stainless steel sheets 12:20 Overhead cabinet holes and wires 15:39 Enlarge holes for perimeter lights 17:09 Fish wires through perimeter and cockpit ceiling 18:30 Install lights 19:49 test lights 21:23 Wrap up 22:02 Like, Subscribe, Emoji, Bye! 22:23 End Card ☝More about us, our adventures, and how we do all this on our website.More about Roam here ⛵️https://sailingroam.com/our-sailboat/ 📲 Keep up with us on social FACEBOOK: https://facebook.com/sgsailingroam INSTAGRAM: https://instagram.com/sailing_roam ----------------------------------------------------------- WE'RE GERI AND SHAWN. Cape Dory sailboats are often prone to leaks at the hull-to-deck joint, which can occur both at the teak toe rail fasteners and where the glued joint edge has degraded. Sealing this area from above is a huge task; it requires either fiberglassing over the entire toe rail and then repainting the whole boat, or removing the rail entirely to glass the joint and reinstalling a rail - which still leaves you with potential leak points at the new fastener holes that could leak. Instead, to save some labor and ensure a seal, here in part 5 of this Cape Dory 30 Refit series we make this deck joint watertight by fiberglassing it from below deck. This internal approach creates a permanent bond without the need for a total exterior refit. By choosing this method, we still have the option of keeping the original toe rail in place and adding some height to the worn down rail by laminating another piece of wood to the top and finishing it with a durable accent paint rather than high-maintenance varnish. If you have other techniques for tackling these joints or any questions about the process, let me know in the comments.

Sail Trax Join Nick as he chats to the brains behind the exciting new app SailTrax, Nikolas (Niko) Molinari. What is SailTrax? Showtime! Listen as they discuss how this app is the first of its’ kind, in that it is not targeted at boat owners. It was actually built by and for boat charterers, enabling leisure sailors to both view and share real-time data, such as (but not limited to!): Route taken Wind speed Boat speed Wind angle Heel angle They will also cover topics like how Niko and Nick connected, Nick’s role in Niko’s app development and what Niko hopes to achieve through SailTrax. These are the kinds of relationships that we get really excited about here at 45D. Niko’s journey from YouTube commenter, to Sharpen Up flotilla Skipper, now a solid member of the 45D whānau and inaugural app developer! And we are SUPER excited to have Niko LIVE on our channel. PLUS we have an AWESOME opportunity/give away for everyone who watches the steam LIVE. Gotta watch to find out! Live 17th April 2026, 1630 CET
Live aboard playlist: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLp3_kFYaicOUSsQZlOM1aTyHTdsRDNDr7&si=GjpG4xOPed-fbbG5 Thinking about living on a boat in Seattle or the Pacific Northwest? Wondering how much it costs to live on a sailboat in Seattle, whether you can legally live aboard in Washington State, how to find a liveaboard marina, and if boat life is actually cheaper than rent? This video breaks down real-world Seattle liveaboard costs, including moorage fees, marina waitlists, liveaboard rules, utilities, maintenance, and insurance—plus alternatives like anchoring, mooring buoys, and full-time cruising in Puget Sound and the San Juan Islands. This is a Practical Sailor-style deep dive into the system behind living aboard: limited liveaboard slips (~10% cap), long waitlists, real monthly costs ($1,300–$2,500), and why maintenance (often ~10% annually) is the expense most people underestimate. We also cover the Pacific Northwest climate—condensation, heating, mold control—and the realities of currents, cold water, logs, and regulations. Practical Sailor is your trusted resource for reviews of sailboats and sailing gear. https://www.practical-sailor.com Chat with us on Facebook! https://www.facebook.com/PracticalSailor/
