After more than a year the NTSB has released it's report on the capsizing and sinking of the 90' Northern Marine Long Range Motor yacht. Here is a link to the page where they publish the reports. Look down the left side for the ​"Launch Capsizing of the Yacht Baaden". We go for a scooter ride around the island on what could fairly well be described as a lighthouse tour headed by Christian (the inspector). You don't see it in the videos but Logan absolutely refused to keep up with everyone and would arrive at least 10 minutes late to each lighthouse much to everyones amusement. Probably the most amazing thing from my point of view was that Simone turned out to be a cosmologist but was so humble that we only found out on the last day after Pete prompted her. I know I have written about this before but I really found that to be incredible, I wish I had gotten the chance to speak to her more about it. Anyway the place in the picture above is the type of place you dream about when your planning your trip around the mediterranean. Shear cliff face, tied off to the rocks, previously occupied by ancient civilisations, protected from the Mistral, snorkelling heaven, enough boats near by to make friends but not so many for it to feel... occupied or sort of, spoiled. It was the perfect spot to take all the crew and to meet up with Jeff. Special mention for poor old Tomas who sailed his boat over from Barcelona and put on a feast for everyone on one of the nights but we got no footage of it because everyone was either too tired or having too much fun to even pick up a camera. We've just made it from the Bahamas to St. Barth's, and we're ready to enjoy ourselves! We've been placed on an island with perfect beaches, perfect waters, and breathtaking views. After stumbling around town our first morning, still suffering from sleep deprivation, we instantly fall in love with St. Barth's and its main harbour of Gustavia. There are beaches full of shells, brilliant turquoise waters, and panoramic views from up on the hillsides. Being such a popular harbour, we were pushed to the back where we ended up anchored on a bed of rocks, but luckily the forecast was for very light winds and we were not worried about dragging. While sailing we have been caught out by the VIRUS and cannot enter any country. We have to somehow make do until the world becomes normal again. So we set sail for a reef in the middle of nowhere, 272 nautical miles off the coast of Nicaragua. We have no sailing guide so we rely on dodgy charts to get close but as usual the charts are out by a mile or 2. Sailing doesn't have to be expensive! Madagascar is a gem that we really fell in love with and it's incredibly cheap living. Amazingly beautiful people, cheap cold beer, great food, and plenty of places to explore. It's a real gem where you can fill the boat up with rum, beer, and food for less than $30 bucks. Not to mention crazy cool nature reserves that set you back about $1. Hopefully this video gives you into a glimpse into what made Madagascar so special for us. Nordhavn 50 Offshore Training Delivery from Vero Beach, FL to Southport, NC. 400+ miles. In June of 2020 Jeff met with Neil and Kathleen Donohoe to join them on a multi-day non-stop training cruise from Vero Beach, FL to Southport, NC. The Donohoe’s purchased this Nordhavn 50 (unlisted private sale) through JMYS in November 2019. At that time they planned to keep the vessel in Vero Beach, FL for the first half of 2020 and then move north to fulfill their insurance latitude obligations which started in July. This video is an attempt to capture some of what we saw, learned and discussed, while sharing this mini-cruise with others who may also be interested to find out more about what it is like to travel offshore and do your first overnight passage. One of the commitments the JMYS team loves to honor is spending time with our clients well after the sale to join them for a couple of days coaching, instruction and training. This is a favorite part of our job, but doesn’t always happen due to timing conflicts with scheduling and weather. We blocked off the third week of June months in advance, well before the Covid-19 Novel Coronavirus Pandemic. As the date to book flights and confirm the trip drew near, we all agreed that it was safe for Jeff to travel across country, the boat was ready and, more importantly, Neil and Kathleen were keen to head offshore and test their sea legs on a long continuous run. There is always a bit of anticipation for the unknown and for many trawler owners there is trepidation about traveling at night…it seems scary, until you try it and see you CAN do it. Jeff has traveled many nights at sea and enjoys sharing many of the skills he has learned providing a firsthand, on-the-job experience to our clients. Neil and Kathleen had practiced locally to prepare for heading offshore which really helped. When one of them was on watch or had the duty for an engine room check it was familiar, just a little bit different bouncing around. Night watches may have seemed intimidating before actually doing them, but both Neil and Kathleen have much more confidence now. Successfully arriving after running for 94 hours straight removed any doubts of whether they could handle this or not. The “perfect” offshore passage is boring…everything works, there are no exciting moments or break downs, it’s simply a matter of doing time to connect the ports. This trip wasn’t boring or exciting, however the seas were lumpier than forecast. It was uneventful for the most part, but a great educational experience (watch and see). Hourly pilothouse reports and regular engine room checks become routines that help fill the time and keep you in tune with your vessel. We all filled in the checklists, completed the inspections when it was our turn, and each of us found our own rhythm – gaining insights and awareness not only with the boat. You can also learn a lot about yourself when you travel away from land. Tactically we went too far offshore and overshot the Gulf Stream push. This reduced our course adjustment options so when it got rough our only choice was to slow down. The second day was just plain uncomfortable, and Jeff didn’t even break out the video camera because he was lethargic and unmotivated to film. The Nordhavn 50 ran smoothly and we got into a groove that would allow us to keep running for days. It gets a little bit old and soothingly monotonous, but the countdown to arrival is a mix of “finally” and “shoot, it’s too soon”. Arrival morning was timed for daylight and slack tide and we knew we were getting close when our phones started beeping to alert us of missed calls, texts and emails (that part of civilization is easy to ignore when out of range, but also meant we had to set aside time once ashore to catch up). The Donohoe’s did a lot of research before making their decision to purchase. We reviewed several brands and models before finding this Nordhavn 50. The previous owners, Clayton and Deanna, maintained her in excellent shape and were ideal sellers. 50-05 was previously known as “Tivoli” (read it backwards). It was a fun trip and now Neil and Kathleen are positioned to explore at will, linger if they like it, and check out new and exciting locations on a whim secure in the knowledge that they know how travel by trawler. There's nothing quite like realizing you're the only souls on an entire island! In this episode we continue our exploration of the magical and remote Florida Keys. After a great nights sleep Kazza decides to take the paddle board out for a spin in the calm and sunny conditions and paddles right over a nurse shark. The shark isn't spooked at all and she gets some great shots of it swimming under her. After taking care of our daily boat chores, like cleaning the bottom, we decide to go breath underwater and take Maggie out to the Wind Jammer Wreck. It's an amazing experience to scuba dive such a huge sailboat from the era of working cargo sailing ships. The visibility is AMAZING and we're surrounded by barracudas, schools of fish, and some incredibly healthy coral! After our dive we take Maggie out to Loggerhead Key and find ourselves completely along with the entire island, lighthouse, and beach to ourselves. The Little Nugs is in her element and absolutely loves exploring the beach while we take turns snorkeling. The weather takes a shift and we batten down the hatches for a 3 day blow where the winds are hitting 30 knots. We sit good and comfortable after moving Delos to a more protected spot. Finally, Brian goes on a night time-lapse mission and gets some incredible shots of the stars rotating behind Fort Jefferson! For more sailing around the World Action!
