Guys, watch and learn! See how my petit, 17 year old daughter overhauls all the brake calipers of my 30 year old, lifted Toyota Land Cruiser HJ60. At the end of our last episode, we left you thinking we ran aground. Yeah, we did. Though in all fairness, it was more of a “nudge the bottom” situation. The question was, how did we manage to run aground in 8 feet of water, when we only draft 4? Turns out we were drafting much more. Unbeknownst to us, the line we had strung under the hull between the midship cleats had slipped off turning our several mile journey from the yard to our first marina. Believing our board was still up (we draft 4’ 2” with it up), we thought we’d just squeak into a slip with 5 feet of depth. Nope. We hit bottom about ten feet before reaching the dock. Now what? This turned into quite the drama for our first days on the river. We started with staying overnight at a lock, which you generally aren’t supposed to do — especially without permission; fortunately the lock operator on duty was sympathetic to our situation, as the lock itself was the only area in this part of the river with enough depth for our boat in its current state. The next morning, we backtracked six miles, first to Crowley’s Yacht Yard to procure some hardware for a new mast plug. The plug needed to bear the weight of the 200 lb. centerboard (via the pennant running from the board up through the partners and to the rope clutch on deck). This was our other problem: The first version of the mast plug we had fabricated didn’t work; we needed to make a new one. The rigging master at Crowley’s was incredibly helpful, and even gave us a couple blocks for free. We headed back to Skyway where they had dock space for us to start building the new mast plug. We were hoping that with a new plug we’d be able to pull the board up. Alas, no dice… We had to haul out. Three hundred and seventy-five dollars later, our board was back in its trunk, and our boat was again drafting 4’ 2”. We found out the centerboard had swung forward of 90 degrees, and the pennant had become jammed between the board and the trunk. Once we had the boat out of the water, we were easily able to free the pennant, and winch the board back up. Onward downriver! Hope you enjoy, Lauren & Kirk P.S. We sail from Los Roques to Bonaire, stopping at a tiny bunch of islands called Aves. I’ve never seen so many birds in my whole life! We get salty for a few days and checkout some of Bonaires many dive sites that it has to offer. We throw on some scuba gear and go and checkout the wreck of the 'Hilma Hooker'. She lies in approximately 100 feet (30 m) of water and at 240 feet in length and is quite a site to see! This 1978 Endeavor 32 we picked up has a 2004 Westerbeke 20B Two engine in it with 270 hours, newer rigging, sails, and in-mast furling, new bronze thru-hulls, seacocks, and a recent full bottom job that repaired blisters and applied a barrier coat, and new anti-fouling. How can you get your own free boat? Well, there's no secret to it. We sailed to Panama and prepared for our transit through the Panama Canal! We got stuck into the paper work with our agent Eric (whom we highly recommend) and we were soon scheduled to go through in just a few days time. We sail to Chaguramus Bay - Trinidad from Grenada to install a watermaker we had ordered. The mail arrives and we get started with the installation straight away in the marina. We decided it would be a smart idea to install one before we head into the Pacific, after one to many close calls of nearly running out of water on longer passages we've had in the past... We get the job done, and finally have some free time to go and checkout Trinidad. It's a pretty cool little spot! He comes from a long line of sea fearing people and even his father and grandfather were sailors. Yet, Gener didn't learn to sail from his father or grandfather. Because right about the time he was old enough to take to sea, most mariners had already traded their sails for engines. In 2008 Gener crewed on a sailing yacht from Palawan to Africa. He witnessed thriving traditional sailing cultures in the Indian Ocean and Middle East and began questioning why ancient Filipino sailing traditions were in danger of extinction. Gener was inspired to revive native sailing, natural navigation and boat building techniques in his home province of Palawan. The paraw project was launched to revive Palawan’s ancient sailing traditions and bring back the local art of sailing, natural navigation and paraw building. “A return to sailing makes sense – our marine environment is under threat and fuel prices are rising. Sailing up the Wild coast! We loose sight of land as we turn east across the strong Agulhas Current, Sailing into the big Southern Indian Ocean! A rough sea unchecked by any land, and we felt it! Struggling to keep our food down Delos starts taking in water through the bow thruster and that’s not our only water leak :( This rough weather really made us appreciate the small things in life like being able to put a glass down without it flying away or taking a shower for the first time in 7 days! You know that feeling when you’ve bitten more than you can chew? Winter sailing in New England is no joke, and it took its toll on both Delos and her crew. We find ourselves facing a gigantic project list to complete in only a few weeks before Karin's US Visa expires. After running aground 4 times we finally make it to a dock in Annapolis to begin tackling our list. Delos is now over 20 years old and she's in need of some love, and we're in the perfect place for us to get some work done. After writing our to-do list we both feel a bit stunned by what we’ve taken on, and things don't get easier as Brian heads in for surgery making him incapacitated for at least two weeks.
