Chesil Beach is a huge, open sweep of shingle running west from the Bill of Portland in the English Channel. In the days of square riggers, it was a dreaded lee shore on which ships would become embayed in heavy southwesterly weather, to be wrecked in the cruel seas on the beach. My visit had a special family connection going back to World War II. First morning waking up on the water aboard our steel schooner, the Alaskan Gypsy — tied up in Wrangell’s Heritage Harbor after launch. We decided to stretch our legs, walk the docks, and bring you along on a casual harbor tour for our YouTube fam. No script. No plan. Just gulls singing, boats of every flavor (commercial fishing vessels, gillnetters, sailboats, liveaboards, working craft), some boat-for-sale gems, and a few rain squalls in true Southeast Alaska fashion. Somewhere along the way, we met kind strangers turned friends. Tim and Donna are kind souls with an incredibly unique unstayed, freestanding carbon-fiber-masted schooner (a Freedom-style rig you rarely see, especially in small Alaska harbors). One of those unexpected “harbor magic” moments was connecting with them and hearing stories of the sea! Soon after we left them, we met up with another friend who has a pretty amazing float house, used as a hunting platform! One of the charms of small, Alaska towns. We didn’t finish the whole harbor (the weather and talking deterred us), but we covered a lot — and we hope to be back for Part Two. After 18 months (and counting) of refit life, this episode is all about the projects that keep us moving forward while we wait on weather windows and delayed parts. Big milestones don’t always happen on schedule, but there’s always something that needs doing on a boat. In this video, we tackle a series of essential “in-between” projects that bring our sailboat closer to being fully functional again: ⚓ Remounting the davits — getting them back in place after earlier refit work. 💧 Installing a new freshwater pressure pump — using a shallow well pump instead of a typical yacht pump for improved performance and reliability. ⚡ Starting the AC wiring in one hull — laying the groundwork for onboard power systems. 🚿 Replacing the shower sump boxes — upgrading to smart drains and dedicated pumps for a simpler, more reliable solution. 🍽️ Reinstalling the galley cabinets — a big psychological win that means the galley is now fully plumbed and wired again. These are the kinds of jobs that don’t always make headlines, but they’re what turn a stripped-out boat back into a livable, functional home. After a year and a half of refitting, moments like these remind us that progress is still happening — even when the big projects are temporarily stalled. If you enjoy real-world sailboat refits, practical system upgrades, and the honest pace of DIY boat work, this episode is for you. ⛵ In This Episode: Davit reinstallation Freshwater system upgrade AC electrical system prep Shower drain and pump upgrade Galley reinstallation and systems completion 00:00 Original song slideshow 01:08 Intro 01:49 Channel intro 02:06 Install fresh water pressure pumps 05:55 Install shower drains 09:19 Re-hang davits 12:36 Reinstall galley cabinets 15:36 Start AC wiring 19:54 Coming up next week 20:17 Like, subscribe, and leave and emoji 20:37 Original song reprise 20:51 End card #SailingLife #BoatRefit #SailboatMaintenance #CruisingLife #Rigging #MastWork #DIYBoatProjects #SailingCouple #SailboatRestoration #LiveaboardLife ----------------------------------------------------------- #SailingLife #BoatRefit #SailboatMaintenance #CruisingLife #Rigging #MastWork #DIYBoatProjects #SailingCouple #SailboatRestoration #LiveaboardLife © Sailing Roam 2025

Sailboat Solar Upgrade: This Solar Upgrade is a Game Changer For Our Liveaboard Sailboat Episode 102
Living aboard a sailboat means every upgrade turns into a full-on boat project — and in this episode of our liveaboard sailing journey, we’re taking on a major solar and battery upgrade while docked in the marina. As we prepare our sailboat for long-term cruising and sailing around the world, reliable power on board is essential, and that means tearing into the boat and dealing with the chaos that comes with it. To install our new solar power system and battery bank, we had to completely clear out the cabin, turning our floating home into a construction zone. This is real boat life — messy, challenging, and incredibly rewarding. If you’re a sailboat owner, beginner sailor, or dreaming of travelling the world by sailboat, this episode gives an honest look at what it takes to upgrade and maintain a cruising sailboat while living aboard full-time. While we’re stuck in the marina, we make the most of it by knocking over a long list of liveaboard boat jobs. From maintenance tasks to small repairs, these marina days are all about preparing our sailboat for future offshore sailing and extended cruising. This is the behind-the-scenes side of liveaboard sailing around the world that doesn’t always make it into the highlight reels. Of course, life aboard isn’t all work. When the tools get packed away, we escape the marina and head to the beach for a refreshing swim — a reminder of why we chose this lifestyle in the first place. It’s all about balance: hard work on the boat, freedom on the water, and enjoying the simple moments in between. If you’re interested in sailing, boats, off-grid solar systems, sailboat upgrades, or the realities of living on a sailboat, this episode is for you. Follow along as we share the highs, the mess, and the lessons learned while preparing our home to sail further, stay longer, and live more independently at sea. It's been two years since our first sail in @SailingAstridTheWombat actually that means it's been two years since our first sail ever. That's right two years ago we bought this Beneteau Oceanis 430 and pulled the sails up for the first time ever when we brought her home. A sail that stretched 700 nautical miles from Townsville in Far North Queensland Australia to Moreton Bay in Brisbane Queensland. Each experience we have and each new sailing skill learnt just keeps bringing us closer to taking off to sail around the world in our Beneteau Oceanis 430 @SailingAstridTheWombat living our boat life dream. We bought our Beneteau Oceanis 430 in October 2023 with zero sailing experience but the belief that we can do this. We have filmed our journey from looking for boats, buying the boat and downsizing our house so we can liveaboard and all the messy wonderful life stuff in between. Join us now as we settle into liveaboard life and get our boat ready to take off and sail around the world. As new sailors we want to share all of our learnings and keep it real in our videos. We want to show step by step what it takes to choose a boat, buy the boat and learn how to sail. Our sailing learning curve is steep so come along with us as we learn and grow as liveaboard sailors. ► We got our first look at the MC75 in La Grande-Motte. But this model isn’t exactly new, with hull #1 having been launched in 2023 and already completed two seasons in the Mediterranean and one in the Caribbean. ► On board, it’s all about luxury and comfort, but performance hasn’t been overlooked, judging by the daggerboards - which retract in the event of striking something - that plunge to almost 15 feet (4.5 meters) below the surface. The builder promises, in certain conditions, speeds equal to those of the wind. We’re willing to believe it, since this catamaran, over 76 feet (23 meters) long, was clocked at 29 knots! Also worth noting is the structure of this multihull, which doesn’t feature a forward crossbeam - the architects drew direct inspiration from the foiling catamarans that competed in the America’s Cup by adopting a central carbon longeron. ► A test sail will be featured in an upcoming issue of Multihulls World. ► Technical Specifications: Builder: McConaghy Architects: Ker Yacht Design Length: 76’5” (23.3 m) Beam: 32’2” (9.8 m) Draft: 14’9” (4.5 m) (boards down) Sail area: 3,207 sq ft (298 m²) Motors: 2 x 150 HP Price: $ 7,000,000 ex-tax ► Sign up for our newsletter and win a free two-month subscription to Multihulls World by clicking here: https://bit.ly/48JP1Vk ► Become a FREE SUBSCRIBER to Multihulls World's YouTube page now - https://www.youtube.com/c/MultihullsWorld ► Log on to our website to discover over 600 multihulls tests! Part 2 of the Makapu'u Lighthouse Rd Hike and Dragon's Nostrils Hike. Had a few hours to work on editing and playing around with some of the neat graphics, but we will see if I can stick with them. We traveled down from the Makapu'u Lighthouse portion of the hike on the southeast part of Oahu and made it down to the blowholes shooting giant blasts of tidal water high into the air. Fueled by the surf from the Molokai Channel, the water surges into narrow passages under the rocks and are propelled through, up and out for our enjoyment. We won't be able to see something like this until next winter season, so was very excited to catch it for the first hike of the Barefoot Hikers 2012. Barefoot Hikers is a group of novice hikers who go out whenever and check out the trails on Oahu or wherever we are. All you need to do is go on Facebook.com/BarefootHikers for meetup times. Hope to see you on trails like this. Thanks!

Engelbert Frauscher founded his first boatyard in Vienna on the Old Danube in 1927. He quickly acquired an excellent reputation as a boat builder and produced the “O-Jolle” dinghies for the Olympic Games in the 1930s. In 1945 the diligent boat builder started over again and founded the shipyard in Gmunden. The first electric boats & motorboats were created in the 1950s, and it did not take long until his sons Ernst and Hans also started working in the shipyard. New projects followed. For instance, boathouses and a harbour facility were built and a sailing school was also established. In the beginning of the 1970s, a new production facility was constructed in Gschwandt, where production continues to this day. The 3rd generation joined the company in the 1990s: first Michael and then Andrea and Stefan. New types of electric boats and motorboats were developed and the internationalisation of the company was expedited. Currently there are Frauscher dealers in 20 nations, among others also in the USA, France, South America, Australia, China and Qatar. The Frauscher Boatyard has particularly aroused attention in the industry in recent years since 2007 due to its innovations, the unmistakable design and the outstanding quality with regard to motor and electric yachts. For instance, the first serially produced hybrid and hydrogen drives were successfully developed and introduced. The company is also very proud of the five nominations for the European Powerboat Award in the past five years. In 2011 this was even possible with an electric yacht. Another milestone in the history of the Frauscher Boatyard occurred in March 2012. The first company-owned international subsidiary, “Frauscher Espana”, was opened in Port Adriano (Mallorca). This step was announced with the introduction of the new flagship, the Frauscher 1017 GT. This model is the first motor yacht which has been developed and produced from the very beginning for the ocean.
