Sailing World editor, Dave Reed, Zooms-in with professional sailor Andrew Campbell to discuss wing foiling, United States SailGP's Foiling First Chicago initiative, and takes a deep dive into SailGP starting tactics.
This is dive 12 of my Blackbeard Liveaboard. Location was the Exumas in the Bahamas. This is a fast drift dive with a huge drop (25' down to about 50') that creates turbulence. This happens about 1:20 seconds into the video. In all the movement my tank came out, but my dive buddy helped secure it. It is hard editing a 40 minute dive to something that will not bore others.

–––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Groove Grove by Kevin MacLeod http://incompetech.com Creative Commons — Attribution 4.0 International — CC BY 4.0 Free Download / Stream: https://bit.ly/groove-grove Music promoted by Audio Library https://youtu.be/83FJtTnvDhc –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Lights Of Elysium - AERØHEAD https://soundcloud.com/aerohead Creative Commons — Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported — CC BY-SA 3.0 Free Download / Stream: https://bit.ly/lights-of-elysium Music promoted by Audio Library https://youtu.be/FyDoQB0vBZI –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Song: LiQWYD - Voices Music provided by Vlog No Copyright Music. Time for a short update on what we have been working on this weekend. We worked on 4 different things, all related to Sustainable Sailing - Friday: Bilge drains around watertight battery box - Saturday: Building supports for solar and pushpit tubes - Saturday: Fixing an issue with the stern found in the survey 3 years ago - Sunday: last backing plates for dyneema chainplate loops in the aft cabin In the coming week I'm trying to finish all the fibreglass work that requires us to strip out the aft cabin. Plus getting ready to connect the batteries next weekend (when our electrician son is visiting). Note we have now setup Sustainable Sailing Memberships on Ko-Fi see https://ko-fi.com/sustainablesailing Or buy great hoodies, t-shirts and bags from our shop at https://sustainablesailing.teemill.com/ We are refitting a 1977 Rival 38 Centre Cockpit Ketch for zero fossil fuel world cruising. #boatrefit #sabbatical #ElectricSailBoat

Q: You've got 17" Garmins up here and you've got Garmins upstairs as well on the tower. You interface the gyro data to the screens. The Quick Gyro comes with the QNN Interface (Quick Nautical Network), which you opted for. It allows you to put the controls for the gyro through your Garmin screens. Here you've got Garmin, but it could be RayMarine, Furano, Simrad, B& G or Lowrance. Why is that important for you as a game skipper with multi-stations? A: I'm driving at multi-stations. I'm operating the boat in the flight ridge, as well as up in the tower, and the main control of the gyro is obviously in the saloon where it's in a friendly environment out of the weather. But having it up here, I can still control the whole boat. So you can put it in standby mode and you can see on here on the screen (obviously the gyro is off at the moment) you've got the speed of the rotation of the gyro, and you've got the precession angle of the gyro; you have standby mode at the touch of a button, which as we were saying before, allows you to lock the precession and deactivate the effects of the gyro. ‘Start’ and ‘stop’ you can monitor the gyro from up here and there is the exact same ability through all the screens on the dash as well as the ones upstairs on the tower. So going back to what we were saying before, you use that a lot when you're up in the tower when you say when you hook up the fish right, that's when you start being able to monitor what's going on exactly. So I could do that from any one of the four screens I have here, or I can do it from any one of the three screens I have up in the tower. PG: So the alternative is yelling downstairs to get somebody else into it while they're trying to fight the fish! LF: Exactly, and they do not need to do that, that's something that i can look after and you know you can do it on any one of 7 screens I’ve got on the boat, and being able to look at how it's working and how it's operating; so bangles is doing it OK it's not just a little light that says it's on - that's right, we've got full control and know exactly what the gyro is doing at any moment of the day. .............................................................................. PG, Director Gineico Marine, is with Luke Fallon, Captain Kekoa Sports Fishing, discussing the Quick Gyro Stabiliser. Luke Fallon is one of Gineico Marine’s oldest clients with the X30 Quick MC² Gyro stabiliser fitted on his magnificent O’Brien 56. The Quick Gyro was fitted to the Kekoa three years ago. Today we are using all the parts of this lobster by making a stock with the shells. We BBQd the tail, legs, and antennas. We ate the tail for dinner and then shelled the meat from the legs and antennas to freeze and save. I try to use\reuse as much as I can and get creative with the resources we have around us. #sailingtootsiemarie #onelove #caribbean #caribbeanlobster #lobster #boatcooking#lagoon440 #sailing #travel #adventure #cruiser #boatlife
Ginny met Steve at a wooden boat festival in the 1990's when he was selling his book, Three Years in a 12-Foot Boat. She thought something like, “The crazy things people do!” Fast forward to 2022 and retired City Planner, Stephen Ladd (who married Ginny) shares an amazing story of the 5-years they spent exploring the coasts and inland rivers of South America in a 21-foot yacht and gave birth to a baby during their travels. They sailed from Florida to South America following coasts and islands, then they got into the big river systems down there. Using those rivers they went up and over a big hump called the Guyana Massif, which is the highland between the Orinoco and Amazon watersheds. Then they went up and over another big hump: the high ground south of the Amazon and north of Argentina. Then they crossed that second hump again, coming back northwards into the Amazon, but following different rivers this time. Steve's approach to minimalist sailing, and the challenges of getting off the grid, should inspire anyone with big adventuring dreams and a small budget. After spending 2 months in the St. Augustine mooring field, it was time to head north. We cruised up the ICW to Fernandina Beach where we stayed a couple of weeks. After that, we had to make a stop at Cumberland Island, one of our most favorite places on the ICW. Night Sailing
The forecast was good so Mike and I (Dave) agreed to meet up at Rutland Sailing Club for a sail on Rutland Civil Service Sailing Club (RCSSC) on Friday 30 June 23. The forecast was a F3-4, dry so we looked forward to good sail on Squib Satyr. For a change they weather was forecast and so we launched and rigged Satyr and with the wind blowing from the south/ south east. With Dave on the helm, we headed along the south leg of Rutland Water (RW) and once away from the shore, the wind picked up and we enjoyed a sail up to towards the boundary line for sailing, up to Old Hall on the Peninsula. We had the lake almost to ourselves, the wind was picking up and Satyr, over 50 years old, was showing us she could still give us a great sail, heeling. As ever on RW, wind awareness had to be constant as the wind strength and direction kept us on our toes. Time for Mike to helm. After a few more crossing back and forth we headed back toward Rutland Sailing Club (RSC) and then out toward the end of the Peninsula, Half Moon Spinney and Normanton Church. The wind picked up and got lively with white caps we were speeding along with a good heel on the boat with water splashing onto the decks and onto us both. We were soaked but enjoying the sailing - the years fell off us both and we Satyr did herself proud, making a good way on a beat. The sky greyed a bit more and we decided to head back to RSC for lunch, brought in nicely by Mike in changing wind strength and direction. We'd been well over 2 hours. After a brief lunch break we decided to head back out for an hour or so. This time I donned my waterproof jacket and trousers. Mike on the helm and myself crewing this time. The Waszp Event was on and sailing north in the basin area - Dam down to Normanton Church and looked a great sight. We sailed to towards a safety rib and checked the course to stay out the way and spent time going back and forth in a good breeze with Mike on the helm and myself videoing on My iPhone (as usual - it works for us) and we managed to capture a good number whizzing between the two gates. A wonderful sight to see relatively close-up but out of their way. Time to change helms enjoying the strengthening breeze, now more white horses. Just enjoying being on the water, with a sailing buddy and getting a great sail out of Satyr as we sailed the area between the Peninsula and Normanton for a while before it was time to return to the pontoon. We put in a sail past RSC and sailed in to check out our pontoon to find the wind direction would mean we would have to come in on the other side to the recovery slipway. Luckily the two dinghy sailor came out and were setting off and the RAF Rib kindly moved away to kindly make it easier for us when it came to bring Satyr round to the recovery side of the pontoon. We had a plan of approach and escape if necessary to come in again and we able to come in alongside comfortably, using the strong breeze to quickly slow us, but allow us to gently come along side. Thanks to Malcolm RSC Bosun, who offered to use his tractor to recover us, Satyr was soon back on her trailer and in the trailer park. 15 mins and Satyr was stowed ready for the next members of RCSSC to sail her. Time for a debrief and a pint and reflections of another perfect day, in sailing great conditions, in good company.
