Life aboard isn't always sunsets and smooth sailing... Our family of seven has been working nonstop to get ready to leave port in just a couple of months, but this week brought some of the toughest challenges yet. Mom had to undergo surgery, then was hit with COVID, and just when we thought things were settling down, a surgical complication landed her back in the hospital for days. While Mom recovers, Dad and the crew hold down the fort aboard our floating home, keeping projects moving forward and daily life on track. It's not easy, but this is the reality of preparing for a circumnavigation--family, health, projects, snd everything in between. We share the highs and lows of this lifestyle honestly, and this chapter is no exception. Thank you for all of your support, encouragement, and love as we continue towards our big dream. Follow along as we push through, one step at a time, toward leaving port and chasing the horizon.

Arriving back to my boat in 2024, and start to perform my routine maintenance, including repainting the deck, re sanding and varnishing all the wood work on the boat, adding new canvass etc ... plus many other things I can't even remember. 🚧 Je poursuis la rénovation de la cabine avant de Joy, mon voilier de 1968 ⛵ ! 👉 Au programme : installation d’une boîte de dérivation, mise en peinture de deux parois intérieures 🎨 et surtout… rebouchage des trous dans le gelcoat de la cabine avant. Ces petits défauts viennent soit de l’humidité accumulée au fil des ans 💧, soit des grattages nécessaires pour retirer la colle Sika de l’ancien lino qui avait été collé sur les parois. 🛠️ Pendant que le joint acrylique sèche tranquillement, j’en profite aussi pour donner un coup de peinture à une petite cale. This year the forecast was for punchy upwind conditions for the opening stages of the race and while the chances of a new record were slim, the battle at the front of the fleet was as close as it gets. An extended camera pan unveiling the hull of MALABAR IV opens this episode– it’s fantastic to note this project commenced one year ago! The team’s hard work and Ben Harris' courageous vision have produced a beautiful shape that is also a credit to American yacht designer John Alden's work. As the video illustrates, this project is presented FOR SALE – now is the perfect opportunity for a buyer to design and build the interior and rig to their specifications. Starting with offering up a spiling batten below the plank above and marking the angle and position of the stem, then marking every station frame (which is every three foot throughout the hull) – transferring that information to a length of yellow cedar (in this case) where he then references a table of data which becomes crucial to the process of starting to shape the timber into a plank. The table of data he references provides the width(s) of each plank at each station (station frames in the hull), data that needs to be marked onto the length of timber that will become a plank. With the data transferred, Ben then ‘springs’ a batten through those data points to provide a fair curve which can then be shaped. He then measures the bevel angle between the frame and the plank at each station - learn more about the bevel strip in the video. With real-world stops-and-starts, including pauses for issues that crop up along the way, we hope this is both relaxing and an informative episode showing more of the process of traditional boatbuilding, and to see John Alden’s MALABAR IV - a 47-foot schooner - come to life. ► Two years ago, we discovered the Makai 37 in Croatia, designed by the Italian naval architects Eryd Yacht Design. The Z-shaped aft structure of the coachroof/bimini is unmistakably the signature of this young brand, which has already announced a second model, the Makai 42. In the meantime, Makai has added a touch of sportiness to its 37 in the GTS version, which is fitted with a central foil - a blade between the hulls connecting one to the other. ► Hull #5 includes this feature, and we got the chance to take it out for a test run in Aigio, Greece. It is powered by a pair of V8 Yanmar engines, each producing 370 HP, coupled to Q-SPD (Q-Marine Surface Piercing Drive) drive units with semi-submerged propellers. This configuration, with the same engine power, delivers a spectacular performance boost, as the top speed increases, according to our measurements, from 30 to 42.6 knots! The same applies to fuel consumption, which decreases by 30 to 50% at the same engine speed (starting at 3,000 rpm).
