The Voyage of Sea Swan, 1972. This boat was built mostly on the Patchogue River by Arnie Cortner and his wife, BettyLou. He started with a stand of trees that had been cut down by a developer and built a 46 ft-long schooner to his own design. When it was finished, after 8 years, Captain Forsyth volunteered to navigate from Long Island to St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands. The voyage took nearly a month, when we left in early November it was snowing. This was originally shot on VHS and later edited onto a DVD with narration. Hubert Lemonnier, Race Manager Duty Officer, is a key part of the race management team of the Vendée Globe. Hubert's role is very similar to an air traffic controller — except instead of managing planes in the sky, he and his team manage all of the sailors and boats. During the race, Hubert checks in with sailors every day to ensure their safety. In this second Harken interview leading up to the 2020 race, we ask Hubert about first-time Vendée sailors, his daily discussions with skippers, the race start, and the spectacle of the race village (and how it's been impacted by COVID-19).

We did some sailing this summer and always came back to Medemblik. We will show you a little bit around in this nice old city in the Netherlands. As we sailed from Mooloolaba to the Wide Bay Bar crossing, we encountered some confused seas. Mahina suffered the consequences with a major breakage. Then, going through the Sandy Straits the next day, we ran aground just before low tide and we were obliged to sit it out for a few long hours until the tide was high enough for us to break free. I have to say it was a very stressful time for me (Mimi) and my anxiety went through the roof...I filmed myself with my I-phone to help deal with it, like a diary. I didn't intend to put it on here (I much prefer being behind the camera!!) but in the end I thought it was important to share the lows as much as the highs. It was the first time I experienced such force with strong winds and waves rocking the boat while being aground. But in the end, we finally got to our destination and it was paradise on earth. I think it was well worth all the troubles along the way. Shane wrote a beautiful poem at the end of the video as he has been doing with each episode. It is very poignant.
