At the Women's Cup in Davos, on the second day, 14 races were sailed. The teams performed better. Various tactics and shifty winds at the luv mark challenged the teams. On land, the dearest of the women took care of the children. Beautiful weather and a great ambiance made all the sailors and organisers with their volunteers more than happy. Regattaclub Oberhofen took the lead, followed by Yacht Club Arbon and Zürcher Segel Club.

Unser Segelboot Squib, ein Catalac 9M, ist in die Jahre gekommen, die Verkleidung hängt teilweise von der Decke, die Farbe blättert ab, die Elektrik auf dem Stand des vorigen Jahrtausends,..... Ein Refit steht an. Doch Broterwerb und Verpflichtungen lassen es nicht zu, monatelang in Griechenland am Boot zu arbeiten. Da wird schon 2018 die Idee geboren Squib nach Wien zu bringen, wo man jederzeit Zugang hat, der Einkauf von Material in der Muttersprache abgewickelt werden kann und alles Andere seinen gewohnten Verlauf nimmt. 2021 war es dann endlich soweit, mit zwei komplett überholten Motoren und einem neuen Geräteträger starteten wir Anfang Juli Richtung Südfrankreich.Leider hatten wir für die gesamte Reise nur zwei Monate Zeit, deswegen hieß es die meiste Zeit Strecke machen. Doch manchmal nahmen wir uns die Zeit zu verweilen, uns Orte näher anzuschauen. We were again kindly invited to join the crew of "Exocete" (Jod35) in Angra do Heroísmo, on the Island of Terceira, in the Azores. The Regatta was held on the 1st of October and there were 18 participants. There were southerly winds of 7 to 16 knots and a rather uncomfortable sea state. Another great day on the water 🌊

Court Harkness will introduce courses in boating from the basics required by law to what you would want to know to do blue water sailing! The Canadian Power Squadron was organized in the spring of 1938 in a rather quiet, unobtrusive way, without a name, funds, or yet members. Later, along with other boaters, they formed the first Squadron in Canada, known as Windsor Power Squadron. Our charter was granted by the Federal Government on October 27, 1947. As of October 17, 2014, Canadian Power and Sail Squadrons became one corporative entity registered with the Canadian Government as a Charitable Organization. CPS-ECP is now recognized as the foremost educational boating authority in Canada. Many local law enforcement agencies and municipal authorities consult CPS-ECP on matters of training and navigational hazards. Training has been given by our members across Canada to such organizations as the Boy Scouts, Sea Cadets, and law enforcement agencies, to name but a few. Whenever requested, our members are available to teach, lecture, or advise on boating safety. Canadian Power and Sail Squadrons offers a series of courses in boating knowledge that build from the basic courses required by law to what you’d want to know to cross the ocean. Our boating courses are available online or in-person. CPS-ECP also offers Recreation Vessel Courtesy Check (RVCC). We will check your boat, for free, to see if you have all the required safety equipment in good working order. This presentation is part of the NSC Winter Speaker’s program, which promotes ongoing learning about all things nautical, as well as cruising and competitive sailing. About Court Harkness Court's boating background is mainly sailing although he did own a powerboat for 8 years. He sailed on tall ships as a teenager while racing sailboats as well. He became a sailmaker in the early seventies and worked in Kingston Marblehead (Boston) and New Zealand. He also did some ocean racing in Florida (S.O.R.C.) and in New Zealand. Presently he is part of the Education Department for CPS-ECP and the Course Chair for the Weather course (which means he was in charge of developing the course!) He has been a squadron commander for CPS-ECP in both Ottawa and Kingston as well as the District Commander for the Ottawa, Kingston and Brockville area.

I noticed that my spinnaker has a few small holes in it. I'm sure it would be OK, but I think it would be prudent to stick a couple of Dacron repair patches on them just to give her a bit more life. I also receive a box of goodies to enable me to fit the spinnaker to the boat when i'm there next. So, it’s important to not only surface clean but to deep clean all areas on the boat. Opened all the hatches and the boat smells perfect, meaning no smell at all. One more job completed before our splash. I will livestream our splash and journey home.

After our stay in Hampton, it was time to move on. We had a couple days of lumpy seas with head winds blowing 15-25 knots. We end up aborting our plan to head to Solomons Island and duck into Cornfield Harbor to anchor near Point Lookout State Park. Since it was early in the day, we went to shore to explore this historic area located at the tip of St. Mary's County where the Chesapeake Bay and Potomac River meet. The next morning, we headed to Annapolis with the winds still at our bow. Upon arriving in Annapolis, we discover an issue with our transmission and grab a mooring ball where we stay for 2 weeks while waiting to get into a nearby yard. During that time, we got to see the Blue Angels airshow right over the mooring field, explore the town and Naval Academy and check out the Pride Festival. Episode 039 During the winter months in New Zealand, we take the opportunity to travel and complete any fieldwork Adam has to do whilst Tāiko is safely secured in the marina. From July 2023 to September, we had done a total of 6,000 km and that is not counting the travel we did from April. It's been a busy year for us. However, we love having the opportunity to see many places in New Zealand and Adam's work takes us to some remote places which is even more special. Last year we travelled up the East Coast of the North Island but never showed you. Having to travel around the East Coast for work, we take the opportunity to show you just how beautiful the East Coast is driving from Napier to Whakatāne. It’s been 6 months since Cyclone Gabrielle caused widespread devastation to this area and there’s a lot of hard work being done to clean up the damage. We needed a change that would allow us to spend more time together, give us a better work/life balance, and the freedom to travel. In December 2021 we moved onboard Te Tāiko, a Chico40, and since then we have been so fortunate to explore many of New Zealand’s pest free islands and its beautiful anchorages. With our love of travel and adventure, this lifestyle has enabled us to experience so much more than we could ever have imagined. From new experiences to meeting incredible people along the way, our life has been enriched in so many ways and makes us ever so more appreciative of our environment and the footprint we leave behind. Tāiko is our floating home. She gives us the freedom to go anywhere the wind and weather allows. By living a more minimalistic and sustainable lifestyle, she has provided us with a better work/life balance and has taught us to live and be present more in the moment. Tāiko has also taught us to be more independent and less reliant on services. Some of these experiences have taken us out of our comfort zone many times but as the saying goes, ‘a comfort zone is a wonderful place but nothing grows there’. Our plan is to do blue water cruising. So, over the next year we will be completing some maintenance work on Tāiko and be getting her ready to meet New Zealand’s category 1 requirements to be able to go offshore.
