Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has been the home of the ARC since 1986 and it's easy to see why - great marine facilities, a welcoming city and a beautiful island.
“Jabulo” is a 2002 Dean 440 catamaran, built by Dean Catamarans in Capetown, South Africa. She has been our full time live-aboard cruising home in French Polynesia for the past 3 years, however health concerns now mean we must change our lifestyle. In the pursuit of extreme seaworthiness, all Dean Catamarans feature very buoyant full bows with the bridge deck carried well forward and small trampoline area. They feature asymmetrical hulls, where the outside curvature is much greater than the inner hull curvature, resulting in a reduced wave forming action between the hulls (reduced venturi effect). This, coupled with a high bridge deck clearance dramatically reduces under bridge deck slamming, while also improving overall performance. Another feature of Dean Catamaran’s are the mast which is raked aft by 7 degrees. This unusual feature assists both the yachts upwind performance, and its ability to tack through the wind without the difficulties associated with some other catamarans. We have loved “Jabulo” for many things. Firstly the Dean 440 sets a perfect mix of space, comfort and performance. We will sail rings around a ‘condo-cat’, yet still be comfortable and controllable enough to enjoy doing it. Secondly, the boat is galley-down which gives so much more comfort and usable space than the charter oriented galley-up The boat has been imported into French Polynesia and so can remain here forever, for short holiday stays or long term cruising in the best cruising area in the world. Alternatively kick off your trip of a lifetime from here – the boat is fully fitted out and ready to go (just bring your toothbrushes). https://www.catamaransite.com/catamarans-for-sale/dean-440-4/

Day 13, sewing my sail! I hate it lol The Bravest Dog in the World Is About to Change It. Help Us Get There. I’m Kimmer O’Reilly — sailor, survivor, and founder of a mission that shouldn’t be possible. Two-time blood cancer nearly took my life. When I survived, I expected joy. What came instead was an identity crisis. I didn’t know who I was anymore — just that the old me was gone. Then came Casper — my service dog, my best friend, my reason to fight forward. Now, Casper and I are doing something no one believes can be done: a nonstop solo circumnavigation of the globe… starting from the wrong side. We’re sailing east, into the wind and current, through the Southern Ocean and past the Cape of Good Hope — proving that after cancer, life isn’t over. It can be better than it ever was. But we’re not just breaking records. We’re launching a nonprofit to help cancer survivors rediscover purpose, identity, and joy. This GoFundMe isn’t just to keep our sails full. It’s to build something that lasts long after we return. Donate today — not just to help Casper and me sail around the world, but to help thousands of survivors believe they can start again. Let’s show the world what’s possible. 👉 https://bit.ly/BravestDogInTheWorld

Check out Satori Sailing in Marblehead MA - https://www.sailsatori.com Standing Rigging vs Running Rigging Explained | Sailboat Basics Whether you're new to sailing or looking to brush up on the fundamentals, understanding your rigging is essential. In this video, we break down the difference between standing rigging—the fixed lines that support the mast—and running rigging—the lines you adjust to control the sails. We'll cover: What makes up standing rigging (shrouds and stays) What’s included in running rigging (halyards and sheets) How both systems work together to keep your boat safe and your sails trimmed #sailing #sailboat #sailingschool
This episode discusses proper placement of a sailboat's jib cars on the jib car track and how to find the neutral starting position or "baseline" placement of the cars along the track for your particular sails. Finding the baseline position involves measuring the luff of the sail to find the mid-point and then drawing a line from there, through the clew, and locating the intersecting point along the jib car track. This "baseline" position is the theoretical position where the jib car should be placed in ideal conditions (neither overpowered nor underpowered) and smooth water. It may be different for each sail in your inventory. I also discuss the adjustment of the jib cars based on different sailing conditions. Moving the cars fore and aft changes the angle of force applied to the clew of the headsail. Moving the car aft increases the horizontal force (more pressure on the foot) while decreasing the vertical force (less pressure on the leech). Moving the car forward does the opposite, decreasing the horizontal force on the clew and increasing the vertical force. Generally, for heavier wind the jib cars are moved aft to flatten (de-power) the foot (bottom third) of the headsail and decrease leech tension which increases twist and reduces heeling force. For light air sailing, jib cars can be moved forward to increase the chamber or "belly" in the sail which will provide more power. More belly in the headsail can also used to increase power when dealing with waves and chop. As you saw in our last episode, we arrived into Pulau Air in the middle of the night — carefully squeezing between two reefs before finally dropping anchor in a quiet lagoon. Safe to say… that was enough adrenaline for one day. After a tense arrival, we’re more than ready to kick back and enjoy something a little stronger than water — and the timing couldn’t be better. Our very first onboard brew is finally ready! In this episode, we slow things down, soak in the beauty around us, and celebrate a small win after a challenging passage. There’s nothing quite like that first sip after earning it the hard way. 🎥 In this episode: • Our first morning in Pulau Air • Recovering from a late-night reef entry • Life at anchor in a remote lagoon • Finishing (and taste-testing) our first homemade brew • Much-needed relaxation after the chaos This is what it’s all about — the highs, the lows, and the well-earned moments in between. 👍 Like & subscribe to follow the journey!
Before leaving the Dominican Republic for two months, we squeezed in one last adventure. We visited a local farm owned by friends where the kids roamed free, petted cows and bulls, and even rode horses — the kind of simple, wild childhood moments we love about this life. Back on the sailboat, it was time for the not-so-glamorous side of cruising: prepping the boat to sit safely on a mooring ball while we fly back to Canada to visit family. Lines doubled, systems shut down, everything secured. One final beach day at Playa Grande… and then the long travel marathon begins: dinghy ride, taxi, two flights with a 2 and 3 year old, and one last car ride to Grandma’s house in Quebec. In less than 24 hours we go from Caribbean heat to crisp fall air, vibrant autumn colours, and apple picking with family. This lifestyle may be unconventional — but it gives our kids the best of both worlds. Thanks for coming along ❤️ — Wildly Intrepid Filmed Fall 2025. Snowy morning in Wrangell, Alaska. Audrey is in Anchorage gathering supplies, and I am on my own. Today’s mission: single-hand the 80ft steel motor sailor over to the crane dock and load 3,000 pounds of concrete for a foundation repair job in Port Protection, Alaska. No bow thruster. Single screw. Snow squalls. And a surprise fuel leak in the engine room before I even leave the harbor. This is a real day in the life of running and maintaining a large steel vessel in Southeast Alaska. Fuel system problems, dock maneuvering, crane logistics, and figuring it out solo. Living aboard year-round means learning to handle your boat alone when needed. It also means solving problems as they arise, whether that’s leaking inspection plates or moving freight by crane. 3,000 pounds of concrete is heading back to Port Protection for the next phase of foundation repairs. Thanks for being here. If you own remote coastal property in Southeast Alaska and need access, logistics, or emergency work, reach out through our website or the email in our About section.
