Eileen and I LOVED staying on Ko Adang (THAILAND) because of its beautiful seclusion from Ko Lipe just fifteen-minute boat ride away. Another reason was for its two hikes from where we were staying at the Adang Island Resort. A swampy Spirit of the Swamp airboat ride in Florida with lots of gators — in 4K!
4 days after departing Hobart Australia to sail 1,250nm across the Tasman Sea to Picton, New Zealand the crew of the Ocean Gem had to face a steering cable failure in the early morning hours, followed by two crash gybes that snapped the boom preventer and broke the boom in half. What followed 500nm later was the failure of the steel emergency tiller and then the autopilot, causing total steering loss and ultimately a call for a rescue tow from while mid Cook Strait and 53nm from Nelson. This is a tale of determination, resilience and creative thinking by a crew of six who faced 500nm of hand steering a 12 ton yacht in seas of up to 4 metres and winds up to 29 knots, using emergency steering constructed from 2 block and tackles, an emergency tiller and bow sprit before this eventually failed too. David Meek and his wife Melanie Aubert decided to go on sabbatical in 2017 to take some time to travel. Avid sailors, they bought a Cabot 36 in St Martin with a plan to sail the Caribbean for a year. While they waited out the 2017 Caribbean hurricane season, they spent 9 weeks exploring Europe, including a week-long sailing charter in the Greek Islands. Since then, they have been on a mission to see as many Caribbean Islands as possible, planning to get down to their boat every winter. Plans are currently on hold due to Covid, but David will share his experience of sailing and exploring the eastern Caribbean with some stunning photo and video. David is a teacher and long-time member of NSC, where he and Mel sail Careless Whisper.
