With the weather closing in this week I set about doing lots of jobs I can do indoors. Today I look at a rudder rest and get the basic design completed. Bowsprit chocs are refined and I cut the holes out of the centreboard slot gasket. I also passed my Day Skipper Theory test this morning so i'm very pleased about that. A lot of hard work all worth while. In this episode we reunite with our friends Magnus and Lotta from our buddy boat from our Atlantic islands adventure and we begin to explore a bit more of the surroundings of Cartagena by dinghy to Cala Cortina a nearby beach and by car to Mar Minor where we looked at a boat 4 years ago is it still there but the episode begin with we get a look at Elida a big Swedish sailing vessel. We are a middle aged couple that has left our hectic business lives to go sailing with our boat Fridá af Wisby and our cat Litza. Our goal is not to go to a specific place but to reach a state of mind where we can really enjoy life. Anders has been at the sea most of his life and sailed for the Swedish national dingy sailing team as a young man. Gitte has also grown up with boats and spent every summer sailing with her father as a teenager but made a pause of about 15 years without sailing as an adult, had just begun to pick-up the interest before she meet Anders in 2017. Onboard we also have our cat Litza a 5 year old Devon Rex we call her the cattain because cats always decide what to do. Fridá af Wisby is a Wauquiez 47 pilot saloon that we Gitte and Anders bought in UK in 2019 and that we have sailed to Gotland and in season 1 2020 we sail in the Baltic Sea. During season 2 We sailded south to Dieppe Normandy France. After a winter in France in Season 3 we started to sail the Atlantic coast of Europe to Xufre in Spain where we lifted the boat over the summer while we where back in Gotland to work at our hostel we got there. Season 4 got a short sailing season where we only sailed to Lagos on the Algarve coast of Portugal where we hauled out once again this time to go throug a long list of boatwork and to build a solar arch to make the boat more self-suficient with electricity. After 6 months in Lagos we kicked-off season 5 with real bluewater sailing first to the northerly Atlantic island Porto Santo and Madeira and then further out to the Azores that lays in the middle of the Atlantic ocean before turning back towards the mainland and south coast of Portugal again. In the late summer of 2022 we finally made it into the Mediterranean Sea.

Sailing from St Pierre, Martinique to Roseau, Dominica on a beautiful sunny day. The first test of our new windvane from South Atlantic Self Steering. We bought the new one to replace the one we used across the Atlantic and which was 'tired' to say the least. We had a great sail across and picked up a mooring buoy in Roseau from 'Marcus' which was ECD50 for the night. We took the dinghy ashore and walked to the cruise ship terminal to check in. Very easy and ECD15. Join me, Ryan the Rogue Rigger on my journey of restoring a Mach 2 International Moth that I picked up earlier this year. I plan on upgrading it with all the modern systems with out breaking the bank and then I will take you along for the steep learning curve of learning to sail this Tasmanian devil of a boat. I have dreamed of owning one of these since they first came out back in 2008 when I got to take one for a spin. It was an unreal experience/feeling that I have been chasing ever since. At the time they were crazy expensive to buy and not in my budget. These days they are still crazy expensive to buy new, now there are a lot of older moths on the second hand market that are relatively affordable (Less than a Laser/ILCA in this case). For those of you who don't know, an International Moth is a single handed 11 foot long hydro foiling sailboat. These boats literally fly over the water on two hydrofoils doing speeds 2-3 times the speed of the wind. Just a short video this week as I have been busy prepping my boat for my first Moth race. Unfortunately my brand new GoPro died on it second day of use and I did not have any footage from my last training session. GoPro is sending me a new one which is great. I did just pick up a really cool custom made trailer for my moth and this video is a short tour of it and my plans for it. Next video will definitely have some sailing and boat work!

After sailing halfway around the world, I think that many people spend too much time preparing for heavy winds and not enough time for preparing for light air sailing, which is more likely found on traditional routes. Unless you sail a “super tanker,” boats can’t carry enough diesel to cover thousands of miles. Even if you can carry enough fuel for daysails and short cruises, who wants to motor downwind smelling diesel fumes that envelop the cockpit when your speed under power is similar to the windspeed. Cruising spinnakers will make your sailing much more enjoyable.
