Using the Monitor Windvane for Self Steering, Jib block set up and Racor Fuel filters, while sailing the Indian Ocean to Chagos. Fighting contrary wind and ocean currents and a mysterious engine failure....after 15 days we arrived in the remote atoll of Chagos. Sailing our Bluewater sailboat Brick House from SriLanka to Chagos there was a lot for us to consider while sailing in rough seas, as well as calms, but always with a sideways current making sailing southwest difficult. Patrick set up our Monitor Sailboat Windvane self steering when the wind hit about 12 knots and it steered us flawlessly the whole way saving us from using the electricity for the autopilot... Patrick also shows our setup with our jib blocks to control the shape of the jib for sailing to windward, and later for downwind sailing. Two important things to learn as you are sailing around the world. Installing a Racor Filter fuel filter system onboard years ago was fortuitous...our fuel got pretty shaken up, and our engine failed due to dirty fuel. . We know that they are here in Grenada, in the Carenage in St George. But first our dinghy is trying to sink on us, so Beau tries his best to fix it. In this episode I explain and shows how to glue laminate the wooden keel for the Haven. The white oak keel must bent over the floor timbers. Typically the keel would be one piece of lumber. However, sourcing a white oak board that is over 1 1/2" and 17' long was a issue. Also a broad the size would have been needed to be steam bent to fit on the boat. I therefore decided to glue laminated 4 boards to get the desired curve. In doing so I show how I resawed the oak timbers and used a flexible epoxy to glue them up directly on the boat. I then show how I used bronze bolts to bolt the keel to the floor timbers. We did all of the work ourselves and used Sta-lok fittings on the lower ends of the stays once they were cut to length. At the time we could only afford to do the Backstay, Baby-stay and the Intermediary Stays, as well as replacing some original closed cell turn buckles that looked a little tired. The deal was that we would complete the remainder of the rigging within one year as soon as we could afford to do it and we had the opportunity. This was that opportunity! We had 3 days in a marina fall in our lap and we took used every second of it to change out 6 stays in 3 days. We managed to change all four lower stays, the top caps, and attempted the forestay but were unable to finish as a result of the Furler tube. We'll have to try that one again another time soon! We finished the freshwater manifold. It really cleaned up that area in the engine room and will make it easy to shut off each individual circuit. There are two AIS units on Isabella. One is a built-in receiver on our Icom VHF radio, and the other is the Em-trak AIS transceiver unit which is giving us quite a bit of trouble. The Em-trak was plugged into the NMEA 2000 network and for whatever reason, it wasn't displaying on the Garmin chart plotter. In addition, it is receiving information but doesn’t appear to be transmitting. Isabella's AIS signal is not received on either the ICOM VHF or the Em-trak. The VHF antenna case was cracked, old and ugly so we replaced it the a new 4200 Shakespeare antenna. It won’t solve our AIS issue, but it looks a lot nicer and will give us better receiving capabilities. Recovering from several days of being affected by a cold, we felt good enough to go to the beach for some fresh air and dancing. We’re feeling so much better, yea! Even did some boat gardening. We planted some basil seeds and bought a new mother-in-law tongue (Dracaena trifasciata) plant.
