Fiona Circumnavigates Eastabout (Chapter 5). This circumnavigation was carried out in 2002 to 2003, taking about 67 weeks, much of it in the tumultuous Southern Ocean. After some intense negotiations with the Border Control Officers we are allowed to enter Greece. We pass by Thessaloniki and visit amazing Meteora before driving to ancient Delphi. Daniel wrote a song while we were dealing with the Greek Police and then he recorded it with his guitar track by track into GarageBand finally recording the vocal with the help of the others.  We are a family of six who are taking some time out of normal life to travel. We’ve pulled the kids from school and are home schooling while on the road and the water. We spend time aboard our 34ft sailing boat in NZ and have bought a motorhome in Europe so as to tour the other side of the world. We’re keeping our memories on video here and the kids write narration and play guitars so we have music to use in the videos.

The location of this base is perfect to reach various islands and national parks that are absolutely worth a visit. You can easily reach them by boat or catamaran if you're traveling around there.  "Within 20 miles from here you’ll find two national parks: the Kornati National Park and the other one is Park of Nature Telašćica. The other national park is KrKa National Park. About 30  miles from Biograd, you get there through narrow cliffs and it’s wonderful to see. You can get to Skraden  by boat or foot to see the beautiful waterfalls. You can walk around and see the local cuisine." With restricted movements during this dark period in our history, we have not been able to visit many places at all in this past year and thus the Sailing Schipperkes lacked fun places to explore. But we recently discovered this good anchorage on the west side of Pangkor Island (during NE monsoon) that just happened to have a perfect small islet with a small beach, shallow protected waters and rocks to explore. Perfect to let the puppies play in the water, feel relax in waves & currents. Getting our puppies used to the sea at a early age makes them real sailors! Rob Craigie’s Sun Fast 3600 Bellino racing with Deb Fish was third. “The Spring Series had a super competitive fleet where every second counts,” commented Dee Caffari. “We have had the chance to blow the cobwebs off in The Solent, and on May 1st we will finally stretch our legs offshore. The next race is about preparation and also boat speed rather than the manoeuvres. We have seen how competitive the fleet is, so I am assuming we will all be testing each other to the max.”

This week, we go hunting for some gas, fill up the tanks, buy and fit a new life raft and cook a monk fish curry after a viewers request for help! (You can't say we don't provide variety!) We recently purchased a new refillable tank as it had been very hard to get the butane gas tanks filled and swapped over the last few months so we wanted a back up and have had our regulators changed so we can now use both. We also purchased a long over due piece of kit... A life raft, we had been sailing locally recently and had an old back up on board but it was time to bite the bullet, spend the money and get it done. We take a short motor down the River Orwell to Suffolk Yacht Harbour to fill up the tanks which we got completely stung for.. (£1.56 per litre for red diesel) I hadn't thought to check before filling as our marina charge 67p per litre... Gutted to say the least but a lesson learnt and won't be going back there for fuel again. Finally we make a monkfish curry! Ingredients below. (I have done a recipe for 2 ppl below so double if making more) 2 x fillets of monkfish (Remove all skin and sinew.. very important) and chop in to chunks. 1 x white onion sliced 4 x garlic cloves thinly sliced 1 x thumb of ginger (fine dice or grated) 1 x small Thai chilli - Diced (or any chilli to your taste, Remember to check for heat) 1 x Tbs tomato puree 1 x Chicken / fish or veg stock 4 x curry leaves 1 x juice of 1 lime 1 x bunch coriander rough chop 1 x bunch of parsley rough chop 1 x Tin chopped tomatoes Splash of white wine or apple cider vinegar 200 ml water Salt and pepper Basmati Rice - 100g per person Spice Mix (You can switch out seeds for powdered if you have that) 1 x tsp coriander seeds 2 x tsp cumin seeds 1 x tsp fennel seeds 1 x tsp smoked paprika 3 x curry leaves 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper 1 x tsp tumeric (Or freshly grated if you have) All into a pestle and mortar and grind to a powder. Method Prep monkfish.. removing all the skin and sinew and chop into chunks Use 1/4 of spice mix and season with spices, olive oil, salt pepper and half a lime juice. Leave to one side Rinse twice and soak rice in cold water, leave in water for 20 mins Prep veg, Chop onion, dice, chilli, garlic, ginger, turmeric, herbs. Sere monkfish in a pan 30-60 second on each side and remove to a bowl keep the juices Heat pan for curry, butter or olive oil in pan, in with onions to soften, garlic, chilli, ginger, fry for a couple of minutes then add a splash of vinegar, once reduced add tomato puree, rest of the spices, tomatoes, stock cube, water, salt, pepper and simmer for 10 mins, Boil kettle, drain rice water it was soaking in, then fill with boiling water and boil for 6-8 mins, taste it, it should be just under cooked as it will finish cooking in steam. Drain water and leave to steam for 1-2 mins. Then ready to season and serve. Whilst rice is on add monkfish to curry for 4-5 mins in simmer add the herbs and squeeze of lime. Serve and enjoy. Remember you can add anything to this basic recipe, chicken, veggies, other fish, meats etc... Any questions please comment below! It would be creepy without a resident ghost, but some claim there are many. The most well-known is probably the former asylum doctor who is said to have tortured some of his patients. In the end, he is said to have gone mad himself, seeing some of the island’s ghosts – and threw himself from the bell tower. While the fall didn’t immediately kill him, he died from his wounds not long after.

Dancing is a big part of Tahitian culture and numerous dance schools have many students practice all year around! From young age, dancers are continuing the traditional and also new creative dances with the invaluable support of choreographers and musicians. The best groups compete in the big event, yearly, at the Heiva Festival in July but most dance schools participate in the special ‘Heiva des Ecoles’ in June.

In July 2018, Quicksilver embarked on an Australian-first collaborative reef research and restoration project with scientists from Reef Ecologic to restore a cyclone impacted coral bommie. Four years later, the results speak for themselves. “This project has been highly successful with significant increase in coral coverage and survival of relocated colonies. Important knowledge has also been gained in reef resilience and coral nurturing techniques,” said Quicksilver Group Environment and Compliance Manager, Doug Baird. Located at Quicksilver’s Agincourt 3 platform, the small coral bommie under restoration was impacted by cyclonic waves several years prior and with an unstable substrate, natural recovery was impeded. With GBRMPA approval, the project entailed the installation of six steel mesh panels of 1.5 x 3 metres size to grow coral ‘recruits’ of which three were initially connected to a power source. This was the first time this type of project had been conducted in Australia on the Great Barrier Reef

We haul out our Lagoon 420 Catamaran for maintenance and anti fouling. Day 1 is mainly getting it on the hard and inspecting it. We hope we can soon be back in the water and continue our Dutch Sailing Family adventures!! But we'll do our best to share what happens during this out of water maintenance.
