We go over why the new head didn't work on our engine, now going to do a full rebuild on our boat engine. Keep on digging and find more things that need to be replaced or repaired on this 2004 Bayliner Bowrider 175. For this boat we would really love not to spend over $5,000, our max budget is $10,000. Once back from the shop the fun will begin, we are in no rush to get this boat on the water, our goal is to learn how to boat. Vlog#5 We explore Grays Harbour and have a look at some sea lions. Jess fixes our sail that we ripped along the way. After the gale passes over we head back out into the ocean for an overnight sail down to Tillamook Bay. We were really scared about this bar crossing, everything we could find online about it said it was the most dangerous bar on the whole coast. There has been many crazy storms, and unfortunately many tragic deaths. We were happily surprised that our planning of the tide and weather was perfect. It was completely calm when we went through, there was even fishing boats right in the middle of it fishing!! We motored up the river into Garabaldi where tied up at the marina. It was really quiet at this marina compared to other ones we stayed at as there's no sea lions because they don't allow the fishermen to throw their scraps anywhere nearby! Since this is such a dangerous bar that not many cruisers bother going to, theres not many amenities at the marina. Its basically just a slip, and you pay on the honour system. One of the local fisherman pulled up and offered us some crab as he had caught more than we was allowed! This was the first time Jessica has ever eaten a crab, always been a vegetarian, but now living on the water its time to start eating seafood!! Every boats nightmare is getting something wrapped around the propeller, this happens to us just outside James Watt Dock, in the shipping channel. We immediately pull out our jib and use what little wind we have to stabilise our course. After some frantic radio work and extremely slow progress, we end up being towed in by a small boat and escorted by a Police boat. We safely get into port and arrange for a diver to clear our propeller of fishing gear, which appears to be functioning as it should much to our relief. So with some caution we set sail for Greater Cumbrae where we take a mooring buoy off Millport and spend a very hot day ashore. We discover crocodile rock and enjoy a walk along the seafront. From there we head to Troon to avoid a week of storms that disrupt the whole of Britain and visit our last Scottish port. ► Las Palmas, almost an unavoidable stopover on the Atlantic route from Europe, welcomed thousands of sailors during the month of November, when the north-easterly trade winds begin to set in. These crews included a total of 1,300 sailors flying the ARC colors (ARC and ARC +) aboard 253 sailboats. During our visits to the pontoons, we got a measure of the Starlink revolution: only one entrant was equipped last year, compared with 80% of the fleet today... The quality of the connections offered by this satellite operator makes it possible to efficiently follow weather developments, keep in touch those ashore and even work as if at the office! For the first time since we’ve been following ocean-going crews, Vincent, aboard Outremer 51 Piment Rouge, will be sharing his transatlantic passage with us via his videos, which we’ll be relaying. Another special feature of this 2023 edition will be the large number of diesel cans strapped to the guardwires: in a context of very light winds, unusual for the season, the engines (authorized with a penalty for the Multihull category) are likely to be much in demand aboard many of the multihulls. After two weeks of seminars, meetings and safety inspections, the atmosphere on the docks was becoming truly electric during the last three days running up to the start. Studying the weather, stocking up on fresh supplies, washing fruit and vegetables - everyone realized that there was an ocean to cross... Some crew members are more Zen than others: the oldest sailor in the ARC, Joff Hutchinson, 89, declared: “I’ve been sailing for 82 years and I’ve always wanted to cross the Atlantic. Now that my sons have retired, there’s no better time”.
