In this episode of The Rogue Rigger I take you on along for our first race on the Farr 400 "ASTRA." This was a great opportunity to finally line up next to other boats. It was a good first race, we learned a bunch more about the boat and we keep making improvements on crew work. Unfortunately in the second race we had a great start, a great first beat only to have another boat loose control at the offset mark. Their bow sprit deflected off our backstay and ripped our aft stanchion and lifelines off the boat. Weekend ender for sure! Team ASTRA will be back out on the water training next weekend! In this video I sail my 1981 Cape Dory 28 on the remnants of low pressure system Debby from Deale to Shady Side to check out the capsized wreckage of "Lovebug" - a 122' motor yacht built by Sanlorenzo in Italy at their Viareggio shipyard in 2010 that originally chartered at $125k/week. While the boat received a full refit in 2021, it began taking on water in the Chesapeake Bay in early August and the captain decided to settle the boat in 11' of water near the mouth of the Rhode River. Coincidentally I had docked near this boat during my last 2 trips to Annapolis this summer. This video takes place just days after seeing it last at a wedding at the Annapolis Yacht Club (where it was also docked). I originally targeted the last known coordinates on AIS, but the surge tide caused by tropical storm Debby seemed to pick up and move the LoveBug from its original resting place to slightly deeper water. It was a history-making day for the Australian 18 Footers League on Sydney Harbour today when Tash Bryant became the first female skipper in the club’s 90-year history to skipper the winner of a Club Championship race. Tash, the Australian SailGP tactician, displayed all of her tactical skills in the extremely difficult, light East breeze, which was full of ‘holes’ and regular changes of direction, to lead home the Yandoo team of Tom Needham and Lewis Brake to win the race by 1m2s from Andoo (Seve Jarvin, Jono Whitty, Cameron McDonald). Third place went to the young ‘rookie’ team of Ben Crafoord, Ryan Ewings and Max Nearn, who sailed brilliantly against their more experienced 18 footer teams, to bring Rag & Famish Hotel home just 14s behind Andoo. Lazarus Capital Partners (Tom Cunich) stormed home, after a disappointing first lap to finish in fourth place, ahead of Shaw and Partners and Sixt (Jacob Marks) in sixth place. Yandoo’s victory in the Club Championship gives the team a score of 2 points, a four point lead over their nearest rival Lazarus on 6 points. Sixt is third on 9 points, followed by Club Marine (Emma Rankin) on 17, Fisher & Paykel (Brett Van Munster) 18 and Andoo on 20. The corrected times, on handicap, for the 2025 Spring Championship section of the race gave the victory in Race 4 to Bec Hancock, Cam Walker and Ed Swain on Sotheby’s Ballard Property. Cheguei em Mangue Seco — “a terra de Tieta” — ancorado no Rio Real, na última pontinha da Bahia antes de Sergipe. E aí começa o choque bom: o lugar que a gente imagina (novela, romance, memória) vs o lugar real (areia queimando o pé, vento, maré… e uma paz estranha). Neste episódio eu caminho pela vila, pelas dunas e pelo farol, e falo da história que pouca gente conhece: Mangue Seco surgiu em 1548 a partir de um naufrágio, e em 1930 uma maré excepcionalmente alta invadiu as ruas e “apagou” ainda mais a cidade. No meio disso tudo, vem uma cena que eu jamais esperaria: um café árabe servido com carinho… e a descoberta de que quem me atendeu é prima de segundo grau do Jorge Amado. E tem a parte que só a vida a bordo entrega: correnteza, vento e maré. De noite, uma das âncoras garrou, eu precisei recolher e jogar de novo — e quando entrou maré de sizígia, a correnteza aumentou e a coisa ficou séria. Também tem Pontal (o “porto do mundo” de Mangue Seco), canoas a vela tradicionais trabalhando de verdade, e uma reflexão que volta o tempo todo aqui: viver como quem tem roteiro, não agenda — não por causa do YouTube, mas por causa da vida mesmo. 🎶 **Sailing Intermission – Dancing, Exhaust, and a Bomb Cyclone?!** 🌊 This episode kicks off with Karen dancing to some surf music before we dive into boat projects and everyday life aboard. We finally get our riser prepped for reinstallation—this time for good and leak-free! That meant cutting away some fiberglass insulation to expose the 2.5" metal tubing so the exhaust elbow could be properly welded. To finish it off, we wrapped the newly welded section with exhaust insulation to keep things cool where they should be. Steve uses nail polish to mark the alignment points for the welder… then promptly puts those skills to *another* use by giving Karen a matching pedicure. He gets a little distracted by the dress she’s wearing but somehow manages to paint her toenails without incident. 😄 With a bomb cyclone headed toward Georgia and freezing temps on the way, we fill our 280-gallon water tank before the marina shuts off the water. That should keep us going for about 10 days. It also was for the race committee; PRO Peter Reggio somehow managing to find conditions stable enough to hold a second race, after his first attempt had to be abandoned following a major right shift.
