Bulwarks! They give slightly more freeboard to help keep ocean waves off the deck, and more practically, they give you something to walk on when heeled over really far while bluewater cruising. Herby builds the supports for the bulwarks with Totalboat Silica Thickener and Polyester Resin and then covers over the joint with 1708 fiberglass. This is the initial tabbing which will be further reinforced during later stages of the build. Right now, the bulwarks are just going to support the tent that I’m building to cover the boat and let me work regardless of the weather. This is the favoured two cabin layout and has been used for exactly what the designers had in mind… fun club racing and family weekend cruising. There is an owners’ cabin forward, large saloon with folding table, ‘L’ shaped galley to starboard, a large head and shower to port and second double aft cabin. Ameerah is powered by a Yanmar 30 with folding Gori propeller. There have been significant updates including new standing rigging in 2023, plus updated sails. We finally made the decision to bite the bullet and buy a boat. In the end we chose the second Duo 29 we’d seen — the one with the overseas history, international registration and a long list of positives. Because we hadn’t planned on buying a boat, we arrived with nothing. And this time the boat had nothing, absolutely nothing. Unfortunately, every tool, every part, every bit of kit we own is sitting back in Australia, so we had to start from scratch. Our first big purchase for the new Little Nutshell was a new Peanut, which felt like a proper milestone. A new Nutshell, a new Peanut, a new adventure. We gathered everything we’d left with Wendy’s mum, collected parcels from both her house and the marina and added a mountain of shopping on top. After two long drives back and forth, we finally arrived at the marina for good, took possession of the new Nutshell and started moving aboard with what felt like half of Europe in bags and boxes. An episode with the Ocean Gem crew, who recount their epic 1,000nm trip from Southport to Pittwater via Middleton Reef, Elizabeth Reef, Lord Howe Island and Balls Pyramid. These unique reefs and islands are 300nm off Australia's Coast and are steeped in a history of untouched reefs, shipwrecks, incredible sea and bird life and the chance to stand knee deep in water, in the southern most coral reef in the world, surrounded by a 5,000m deep ocean in every direction. This 9-day ocean passage initially took us 300nm upwind to Middleton Reef, a stopover at Elizabeth Reef and 2 days ashore at Lord Howe Island before sailing around the 'jurassic like' Balls Pyramid, en-route to Pittwater, NSW on a 10-25 knot, 3-day, downwind sleigh ride, in preparation for the Pittwater to Southport race in January. We head into Slovakia and tackle some pretty big winding mountain passes before heading into Austria to Vienna. We put in a turn back west and drive back across Austria into the Bavarian Mountains in Southern Germany. We’ve pulled the kids from school and are home schooling while on the road and the water. We spend time aboard our 34ft sailing boat in NZ and have bought a motorhome in Europe so as to tour the other side of the world. We’re keeping our memories on video here and the kids write narration and play guitars so we have music to use in the videos.
