Terza parte della nostra estate 2024 in barca a vela, sappiamo che la qualità dei nostri video non è da professionisti ma ci piace condividere le nostre esperienze in barca e non solo, esplorando quando è possibile luoghi paesi e città dove sbarchiamo. Vi portiamo alla scoperta di una piccola parte della Corsica, isola da noi amata per la sua bellezza e diversità ma anche per la possibilità di pernottare in rada con relativa sicurezza. Non nascondo anche per la notevole economicità dei porti in confronto alla nostra bella Italia. Spero Vi piaccia.

The first week of December, we began the planking process by moving all our timber over from our shipyard to the slipway and parallelly removing the old planks on port and starboard side. We quickly built scaffolding around the ship, set up the steam box and constructed a portable workshop tent. Starting with the bow, we removed nine planks on each side, some of which dated back to Hawila’s original construction in 1935. Remarkably, much of this nearly 90-year-old timber still showed incredible strength. Meanwhile, we’ve been fairing the new frames installed during the 2022-2023 phase of the rebuild, and we are nearly done! The oak we are using was sustainably sourced from state-managed Danish forests in 2020 and 2021. After air drying at our shipyard for several years, it has now been moved to the slipway, ready to bring Hawila one step closer to being back in the water. In the coming months, we’ll expand the planking work to the midship and aft sections, aiming to replace a total of 350 meters of planking, most of it below the waterline. After the removal of the planks, we had two teams work on each side on fairing the futtock frames. This is important for fitting the new plank in correctly and a real pleasure to work on new frame material. Niko then proceeded with templating the first plank on port side, while some more fairing was going on on starboard side. Then this week, our team gathered on a cold but beautiful, sunny day to put the first plank into our steam box. After 5 hours of steaming, the fibre was flexible enough for the plank to be put in in new place. This process requires good team coordination as we have to work fast before the wood has cooled down and hardened again. Everything worked out smoothly and the first plank found its place onto our hull. Again we are incredibly grateful for the help of Holbæk Gamle Havns Beddinger and our fantastic team of volunteers, who every day defy the Danish winter and give their utmost best! This is a three-cabin model, with a large owner’s stateroom forward, with ensuite bathroom, and twin aft double cabins with a shared bathroom. Sailing from Corfu to Parga has been calm, easy, and absolutely beautiful, the type of sailing you dream about when planning a trip to the Ionian. I’m really starting to fall in love with Greece, the beautiful towns, great anchorages, crystal clear water, and the friendly people make it an easy place to love. On this trip, at one point I was doing 3 knots with no sails and no motors at all, and unfortunately hit a giant piece of wood in the water! I also share why I don't have a depth sounder, how I completely wasted €400, and why slow, simple sailing days like this make Greek sailing so special. Sailors’ Stories from the Fleet The RORC Myth of Malham Race is one of the Royal Ocean Racing Club’s classic offshore tests. Starting from the Royal Yacht Squadron Line in Cowes, the race sends the fleet west along the English Channel to round the Eddystone Lighthouse before returning to the Solent. The Myth of Malham is the second race of the RORC Cowes Offshore Series designed to give sailors of all abilities and backgrounds easy access to an offshore series of races, all starting from Cowes, IOW. This video is not about the winners it tells the story of the race through the sailors who took part. From concentration in light airs to close battles across the fleet, the Myth of Malham Race once again delivered a demanding offshore challenge where patience, teamwork and tactical decisions made the difference. Whilst we did not compete in the race, we did take part as a follower and a support boat. The racers had a real challenge as there was very little wind whereas we had no problem because, not being constrained by the rules, we were able to use our engine.
