E8: We have been patiently waiting, well we acted patient, for our Amazon order to finally completely arrive. We recorded two different sessions about 3 weeks apart as the final 10 boxes of our order got stuck in customs for 3 weeks. The first two boxes came in, no problem, 5 days after our Amazon order. Amazon is amazing, ship literally to the other side of the world in 5 days. In addition to us opening up our boxes and going through the items, we do a quick review and introduction to the Samsung Tab Active Pro 2 tablet. We feel like the Tab Active is a great tablet for use on a boat. It is waterproof to 5 feet, dustproof and shock resistant. A rugged tablet for a rugged environment aboard a boat. We plan on using our Samsung Tab Actives for navigation using Navionics and Isailor. In conjunction with OpenCPN on our laptops, we feel like we have good redundancy and a wealth of information between the 3 programs. In addition, we will be able to use our IridiumGo and Predictwind for offshore weather information. So i have found some moisture / soaking wet in the keels. Lots of layers of anti foul and previous repairs that will be a big job on its own to sand back and fully inspect all the glass underneath. This may seem like a trivial thing to have on a boat, but I can tell you it has been invaluable on the crossing! With each of the four of us getting up at different times, being able to quickly and easily make our favorite drink in just about any sea state has made starting our watches so much nicer. It does require frequent emptying of the drip tray and filling of the water vessel, but it does self clean each time it is turned off. We’ve had this since just after moving to South Africa and we really have enjoyed it, and as mentioned in the video, guests have been really impressed with the quality of the coffee and ease in making it. The reason we chose the Philips is because it had one of the highest pressures to extract the coffee and because of how it uses milk. As shown, it uses a straw system, so we can just stick that into a carton of milk instead of filling a special container that comes with other brands of machines. Episode 027 Well, it wouldn't be New Zealand if we didn't experience a low pressure weather system every couple of weeks. Its location in the South Pacific ocean positions New Zealand near the 40 degree latitude, and with its mountainous and small landmass, means the westerly winds usually dominate. The tropics to the north of New Zealand and Antarctica as well as the southern ocean to its south also influence our seasonal weather. After all, they don't call it the roaring 40s for nothing! New Zealand's weather is known for being 'predictably unpredictable'. But what has made sailing even more challenging for us in the last 12 months are the effects the La Niña has had on our weather, at times making the weather even more unpredictable. Bringing with it strong dominant easterly winds and lots of rain. We have spent many days seeing out strong winds and low pressure systems since moving onboard Tāiko fulltime. In this episode, we have been on the hook for a week when a low pressure system makes itself known in the forecast. We head to a mooring ball we secured to sit it out. Since becoming fulltime liveaboard sailors, we have experienced at least 7 adverse weather systems on anchor (one on the mooring ball) and a number in the marina, making the draw of the tropics and trade winds very appealing. In December 2021 we moved onboard Te Tāiko, a Chico40, and since then we have been so fortunate to explore many of New Zealand’s pest free islands and its beautiful anchorages. With our love of travel and adventure, this lifestyle has enabled us to experience so much more than we could ever have imagined. From new experiences to meeting incredible people along the way, our life has been enriched in so many ways and makes us ever so more appreciative of our environment and the footprint we leave behind. Tāiko is our floating home. She gives us the freedom to go anywhere the wind and weather allows. By living a more minimalistic and sustainable lifestyle, she has provided us with a better work/life balance and has taught us to live and be present more in the moment. Tāiko has also taught us to be more independent and less reliant on services. Some of these experiences have taken us out of our comfort zone many times but as the saying goes, ‘a comfort zone is a wonderful place but nothing grows there’. Our plan is to do blue water cruising. So, over the next year we will be completing some maintenance work on Tāiko and be getting her ready to meet New Zealand’s category 1 requirements to be able to go offshore. Everyone enjoys this place. Sawandarek dive site on Mansuar Island Sawandarek is an incredibly fun dive site. There is so much to see here. There are even a lot of coral restoration being done on some of the slopes. As fas as marine life is concerned, Sawandarek has a huge amount of life. From schooling snappers in the deep, along with a small school of sweetlips, to friendly batfish, turtles and even giant sweetlips. There are even one of the biggest giant clams in all of central Raja Ampat one can see here. The schooling jack fish, that are not shy of divers is a pure joy to find. Usually they hang out in relative shallow water, not far from the jetty. And if you approach them slowly, they might even circle around you.
