Many will have followed Za Tucker and Cole Brauer’s long delivery passage of First Light from Spain to Sydney. Za Tucker had bought the boat from Cole Brauer who became the first US woman to sail solo non-stop around the world, finishing 2nd in the Solo Globe Challenge in 2023/24. Za is aiming to enter the 2027 edition of the Globe Solo Challenge; but in the meantime she is using her boat to give opportunities to women looking to take on skippering roles in ocean racing. Za will race First Light to Hobart in 2025 with five other female crew, all of whom gained their places onboard in a well-organised selection process, including time at sea.

The opening day of the 2018 RC44 Calero Marinas Cup indicated firstly how close the season for the Russell Coutts-inspired one designs is set to be and how to win, it will be vital to make zero mistakes.  Three races saw three different winners. Torbjörn Törnqvist and Artemis Racing romped away to claim race one. Next up it was the turn of Vladimir Prosikhin’s Team Nika to take race two. This left the sole Russian team now competing on the RC44 circuit ahead overall going into the final race. Sadly, while they were second at the first top mark rounding on the transom of John Bassadone’s Peninsula Petroleum, a ripped gennaker put paid to Team Nika’s chances and lost her the overall lead at the close of play on this opening day to Peninsula Petroleum.  The five-event 2018 RC44 Championship begins where it left off in 2017 - in the Calero family’s Marina Lanzarote, in Arrecife in the Canary Islands. The RC44 Calero Marinas Cup will take place over 28 February until 4 March and will pit the world's top businessmen and the best sailors in the industry compete in high-performance one-design 44-foot carbon racing yachts. What could you see on a 2-tank dive in this touristy area, now quite empty of tourists because of the pandemic. Highlight was the interaction with a nice octopus! Thanks to Andy for the dive sites suggestions and our surface safety boat driver. Filmed in August 2020.

Riley was looking for a Covid project while locked at home. A remote control blimp was the challenge! Using an old remote control car for parts, a fan motor, designing and 3D printing propellor blades, balsa wood, glue and more helium balloons than expected and RC flying blimp was built. Many modifications were required as well as buoyancy calculations...... did you know a helium balloon can only lift 14g at its very best? Some really clever thinking with regard to be able to steer the blimp - Riley used the concept of a boats bow thruster to steer it - smart.
