After a long summer in an extended locked down due to the global spread of COVID -19 it was great to finally get out for race. The team of GTR was rusty and missing a few regulars, this did not stop the crew from enjoying a great day on the water. With little ability to predict when world will return to normal you have to take your opportunities when you can. Hopefully things don't get worse and we can complete the series over the next month. If not we can finish the 2020 season with some great memories of a sunny September day on Strangford Lough. Found quite a surprise when removing the old Cutlass Bearing! This short video shows the way I removed the old and installed the new bearing. The other thing about the old bearing was that it had straight vanes. I replaced with the correct spiral vaned cutlass bearing for sailboats with left hand (LH) spinning propllers. On a weekend between removing the old and installing the new bearing, We took our Macgregor 26M Galactica out to Half Moon Cove on Mark Twain Lake with some friends where we were one of the scheduled stops on the 2nd Annual MTL B.A.C.A Poker Run! To those who have pondered this stuff and want to explore some more - Welcome! - this is a side quest to the sailing. As there’s not been much sailing, I’ve had little to say recently but we’re coming back into maintenance season now and my thoughts today turned to jobs like lifting the boat out, removing the mast and rudder, all of which require cranes, lifts and rigging systems involving a lot of advanced techniques and technology to make happen- and always spits me to think once again of how our ancestors did what they did. HOW. I don’t really mind how, or how old, or who or whether it was done by slave armies over decades or unknown techniques in years - the HOW must be something we living today can work out if we just examine the problem carefully . So I suggest employing the best modern practical problem solving minds to examine what would have been the minimum required tooling to create the results we see today in ancient monuments all round the world. I don’t want to prove how advanced anyone was; I want to find the minimum, realistic, long term working methods that could lead to the results we still marvel at today. Because with my knowledge of moving heavy loads and rope technology and techniques there are massive holes in the existing literature. If you enjoy sailing, which is after all, the practical application of human force to conquer the elements- then perhaps today I will get your subscription and a like & comment. - Sailing will recommence very soon.

The mast, boom, and davits we removed shortly after we hauled ROAM out of the water. They have been sitting on foam blocks since then waiting to reach the top of the priority list. Our rigging makeover is a multi step process that starts now. The first step is to remove every piece of hardware so that we can determine what news to be replaced and what can simply be cleaned and serviced and put back in use. Our rigging inspector suspected that Tef-Gel was not used when the stainless steel screws were put into the aluminum mast, and sure enough, many of the screws wouldn’t budge. With the help of a manual impact driver and hours of pounding, we managed to remove every piece of hardware from the rigging. While Shawn was busy persuading the hardware to come off, Geri was inside discovering salt crystals and stagnant water under the cabin sole. A huge clean out was definitely in order before we could figure out where it all came from. No drama in our arrival between the small islands off the coast of Vigo, though, thankfully. Arriving after dark was not ideal in an overcrowded harbor, so we anchored by a beach at the entrance to the inlet towards Vigo. The weather got noticeable colder in the bay area and the winds were picking up as a Gale 8 force storm was brewing. We would have to stay put for a few days...yet again. The city of Vigo gave us the cozy Christmas atmosphere with all of it's Christmas lights and decor. Quelle belle surprise ! Les clichés que l’on a sur certaines îles … Nous n’avons pas vu grand-chose du luxe de St Barth, excepté quelques gros yachts et belles villas dissimulées dans la verdure. Le reste c’est 100% nature ! Nous avons eu beaucoup de plaisir et de surprise en plongée et snorkeling car l’île est presque partout en zone naturelle protégée ; la pêche y est donc interdite ou très réglementée et beaucoup de mouillage se font à la bouée. Résultat : des fonds marins exceptionnels, avec des poissons en nombre et en taille bien supérieure à ce qu’on a vu jusqu’ici. Nous avons eu la chance d’observer 5 requins, des raies léopard, des tortues vertes et imbriquées, des langoustes très, très grandes, des barracudas, des tarpons et tous les habituels de nos sorties sous-marines mais en bien plus gros ! A terre, l’île étant assez petite, nous faisons des randonnées à pied et à vélos pour découvrir les nombreuses anses et très belles plages : on peut toujours trouver son bonheur en fonction de la météo ! La population est discrète mais accueillante, et puis c’est un petit peu la France donc pour l’avitaillement c’est le top : fromages, pains, charcuteries… Une escale chaudement recommandée !

Pour la traversée vers Cape May, toute composante d'Est dans le vent rendra la mer inconfortable comme nous l'avons vécu. Idéalement, on aurait bien aimé des vents d'ouest ou du nord-ouest. Il est important aussi de bien planifier son entrée dans l'Inlet de Cape May afin d'??viter de se retrouver avec une marée descendante dans la proue. Les mouillages à Cape May sont limités. Nous étions très près de la bouée verte au début de l'Inlet car il y avait déjà beaucoup de voiliers.
