Off the coast of Panama in the Pacific. On a 3 day sail to a marina at San Carlos I get a perfect laid back stress free sail and stop for the night at 'Bird Poop Island'! Thank you for watching this episode, please give us a thumbs up and subscribe. #sailing #cruising #liveaboard #lifestyle @sailing @Cruising @aroundtheworld @sailing video On Facebook our page is ‘Adventures of an old Seadog’ and there you can find ‘realtime’ up-dates and news. Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘blar bar mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. The Spanish lockdown continues and the whole world is now being affected by the corona virus. We stay out at sea in the Mar Menor which would be great if it wasn't for the bad weather! And the lack of cooking gas. Daily life for us, and everyone else in Spain, is spent in lockdown. Only one person per family allowed on the streets at any one time. No unnecessary journeys. Offices and shops closed except for essentials such as food. But life goes on. We share a deserted island with seagulls, sit it out at anchor in 40 knot winds, dinghy ashore to get food and eventually find some cooking gas. Thank you to everyone for your support this week. We are Ben and MP! Recently we decided to purchase a two-masted wooden schooner in Brazil. The fun detail about our story is that the boat we bought was sinking and relying on many bilge pumps to survive so we had to lift it onto the dry to start a full refit. Once the boat was lifted (for the first time in her life) we realized that the work needed was much more than expected. Between bailing or accepting the challenge, we decided to go for the second option. Watch us as we bring Yabá back to life with the help of an amazing team of traditional shipwrights, sharing every phase of the process, overcoming the highs and lows and having fun along the way. Got local knowledge about our upcoming route? Let us know! Email us: acorntoarabella@gmail.com If you tuned into last week’s video, you may be aware that our engine died… Luckily, the engine itself turned out to be totally fine. There was an issue with water getting into the plugs that connect to the engine, which caused corrosion, but thankfully it was an easy and inexpensive fix. Steve and Robin are doing what they can to make their way south—despite heavy winds and an unfavorable weather window. Oh, and a missing tender. That’s right, Victoria had disappeared during the night and made her way into shore. Steve suits up and paddles in the cold waters to retrieve her. The timing is finally right to continue on. Steve and Robin experience an overnight with just the two of them. It’s the first time they are truly alone in the ocean—nothing to hit, nothing to worry about, and nothing around them for miles. There are some big decisions coming up that will need to be made, and there are lots of opportunities to explore new areas as upcoming sailing plans are discussed. Steve stocks up on personal locator beacons to ensure that safety remains a top priority for the crew. And a yummy meal is enjoyed by Robin and Steve as they celebrate their first Thanksgiving on the boat. -------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve began the journey as an amateur wooden boat builder crafting a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and now sailing the boat—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that traditional wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project continues beyond the boat shop, as Steve and crew travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. -------------------------- If you are interested in supporting/helping here are a few ways: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/how-to-help Acorn to Arabella's wishlist: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/wishlistpriority TotalBoat supports A2A! The good news is, our boat has been released from lock-down, and we are now able to cruise full time on the coast of England. The bad news is, for all the plans and back-up plans we've been making for the year, we can't seem to achieve any of them. What we had WANTED to happen for ourselves in 2020 is that we'd spend the spring and early summer enjoying England, and then move ourselves down to Spain or Portugal where we would list her for sale, and hopefully and American or Canadian buyer would scoop her up, and we'd be on our merry way back to the US to begin our catamaran build. But as it stands, as of today, Americans and Canadians can not get into the UK to see the boat, without having to go through a 2 week quarantine period first. Our next thought was, "Ok, we'll sail her down to Spain/Portugal, where they'll be able to view the boat there". But...currently, residents of the US are not allowed into the EU. Which means that potential buyers can not get in there, and neither can we. The last option is to sail Elements to the US to sell her, but now we're entering hurricane season, that can't be done until Nov/Dec. Long after our UK visa has run out. So many unexpected issues, but we're trying to make the best of it all! And considering the beautiful cruising grounds we have at our fingertips at the moment, that isn't too hard. Much love from England! Jessica, Matt & Georgie Thank you SO MUCH to our Patrons. These amazing supporters help keep us on the boat, our camera equipment up to date, and the videos coming. We're spending so much time fixing our Bulkheads because we don't want one of the hulls to fall off like on our friends boat. James from @thelastpirate recounts the night when his Catamaran broke in half! If you're a sucker for boatlife and boatyard work, you'll appreciate how we level every corner of our 15 ton boat perfectly and then glue in the very 1st New Bulkhead! This week we're answering the critical question: what happens if you crash the boat? This is a rare but extremely serious situation and can have dire consequences if the boat is not built with collisions in mind. Seawind manager Mike takes us through the crash bulkheads and how they're made to prevent water ingress, and the Seawind 1370's watertight compartments, and we have a chance to chat to Seawind owners Mark and Isobel from s/v Jollydogs who happened to collide with an underwater object in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and had their entire starboard bow ripped off. And yes, they sailed over 1000 miles to safety. Thanks for watching!
