Welcome to our latest video on essential yacht and tall ship maintenance! In this video, we introduce you to the acronym "IWOBBLED," so you won't miss any critical steps during your engine checks. Regular engine maintenance is crucial for the safety and efficiency of your vessel, and our easy-to-remember checklist will keep you on course. IWOBBLEDU stands for: I - Isolate • Isolate the engine from the batteries. • Remove the keys so the engine cannot be started. W - Water • Close engine seacock. • Inspect the sea strainer and ensure it is clear of debris. • Open engine seacock. • Inspect header tank/heat exchanger levels and top up to line if necessary. • Once you have finished all checks and are ready to start the engine, visually check the exhaust for water flow and the colour of exhaust fumes. If fumes are white, blue or black contact a member of permanent staff. O - Oil (Oil Including Lubricants) • Inspect oil level. • Inspect oil colour and viscosity. • Inspect Gearbox oil Level and colour. (if either is a milky colour, inform Skipper/Instructor). B - Belts • Inspect the Alternator belt and the water pump belt. • Visually inspect for signs of wear. • Physically inspect tension. (Turn the belt to 90. If it turns more than 90, the belt is loose and if it does not turn 90, it is too tight. Contact one of the permanent staff if there are adjustments to be made). B - Bilges • Visually Inspect the engine bilge for signs of leaks. If signs of leaks are visible locate the area of origin if possible and contact a member of permanent staff. • Clean the engine bilge of any water, oil or dirt before starting. • Monitor throughout the day. L -Leads • Visually inspect everything leading to and from the engine. • Inspect all pipework and wiring including fastenings looking for signs of damage, wear or corrosion. • Inspect fuel cut-off. • Inspect manual engine cut-off. E- Engine Mounts • Inspect engine mounts to ensure all bolts are secure. D- Diesel • Inspect diesel levels and ensure you have enough fuel for your trip plus 20% minimum. U- Un-isolate • Un-isolate the engine and visually check the battery levels. • Carry on with your start-up procedure and exhaust inspection. After riding out the swell from Storm Senyar in a sheltered channel in the southern Natuna Islands, we woke up to calm water and a new problem — fuel. With the storm now moving away we expected several days of light winds ahead, and after the previous passages we were running dangerously low. Just across the water we spotted what looked like a small floating fuel station — a fishing boat tied to a pontoon with a hut above it and a pipe leading down to several large drums. So we loaded the jerry cans into the dinghy and headed ashore to investigate. The fuel mission turned out to be a complete success thanks to some incredibly helpful locals, but what we discovered next was even more memorable. The village itself, on a small island south of Natuna Besar near the Anambas Islands in Indonesia, was one of the cleanest and most welcoming places we’ve come across in our travels. Colourful houses stood over the water, fishing boats lined the shore, and everywhere we went people greeted us with warmth and curiosity. Walking through the village reminded us exactly why we chose this life — not just for the sailing, but for the chance to meet people living closely connected to the sea and to their communities. Torre de Hércules. The Tower of Hercules is an ancient Roman lighthouse on a peninsula about 2.4 km from the centre of A Coruña, Galicia, in north-western Spain. Until the 20th century, the tower itself was known as the "Farum Brigantium". The Latin word farum is derived from the Greek Φάρος Pharos for the Lighthouse of Alexandria. The ancient lighthouse stands at 55m tall and is still used today for navigation. Torre de Hércules is the oldest working lighthouse in Europe The Tower of Hercules is the only Roman lighthouse which, since its origins up to the present, has been performing its original function: being an aid to navigation for ships crossing the Atlantic corridor. This peculiarity makes it an outstanding exponent which bears a unique testimony to the numerous lighthouses erected by civilisations of the past by the sea and which have unfortunately been lost to time, while the Tower of Hercules remains faithful to its mission of guiding the seamen who come face to face with the immensity of the ocean on a daily basis. The lighthouse was most likely built in the second half of the 1st century or the early years of the 2nd century A.D. by the Romans at finis terrae (Latin for ‘end of the world’) of the world known, namely, north-western Hispania, at the mouth of the great Gulf of Artabro, which encompasses the rias of El Burgo, Ares and Ferrol (A Coru&ntilntilde;a, Spain) to guide the ships sailing along the most western coast of the Empire. The location chosen to build it was a rocky hillock, known as Punta Eiras, some 57 metres high, which is between Punta Herminia and Punta del Orzán, thus dominating the northern end of the peninsula on which the city of A Coruña itself rises. This unique construction has a rectangular plan, each side of it measuring approximately 11.75 metres and a total height of 55 metres, of which 34.38 m correspond to the Roman building and 21 to the restoration made in 1789 to modernize the aid to navigation system. Nowadays, the Tower rises on a wide polygonal platform 32.40 metres wide, which is its base. This platform was built in early 19th century. On the outside, the monument has a prismatic structure topped by an octagonal towered section with triangular reinforcement at the corners, thus softening the square plan. This first towered section is followed by another, shorter one which is the base of the lantern where the powerful beacon that lights intrepid seamen is. For the 12th edition of the RORC Time Over Distance Series we are revealing the awe-inspiring work of the Scaramouche Sailing Trust. The Greig City Academy in North London started the sailing project in 2016 and since then, hundreds of inner-city kids, as young as 13, have fallen in love with sailing. A select few have raced as teams in qualifying races and the last two editions of the Rolex Fastnet Race, finishing on both occasions. We all have an affinity with the sea. Every sailor has felt the forces of nature and the experience becomes compulsive. Witnessing young people getting this compulsion is uplifting and inspirational.
