After sailing to Bira on the Indonesian Island of Sulawesi, we explore the world of the Bugis people, once fearsome pirates and the origin of bogeyman myths, now famous worldwide for their amazing skills handcrafting massive traditional wooden ships The Bugis are the predominate ethnic group on southern peninsula of the Indonesian island of Sulawesi and are one of the most skilled and well known sea-faring people in Southeast Asia. Back in the Seventeen Hundreds the scary bogeyman was no myth but very, very real murdering plundering, pillaging pirates creating havoc along the spice routes plied by ships of the Dutch and English colonial companies. “Beware of the bogeyman” was a phrase used to motivate sailors of these colonial traders to be watchful and ever alert. These bogeymen, the Bugis, weren’t imaginary ghosts but rather a very real, dangerous threat to ship and crew. The modern day Bugis are no longer fearsome pirates but are still master mariners and skilled ship builders almost totally responsible for Indonesia having the largest fleet of timber cargo ships in the world. In addition to that, there is now an also impressive fleet of traditionally constructed timber sail and motor boats catering for the exploding adventure tourism and live aboard dive markets. Took this trip on a whim and it ended up being an incredible experience! Diving down it was just me and hundreds of fur seals, sea lions and harbor seals. As well there was many port Jackson Sharks, and massive short tailed stingrays. The seals would swarm all around me. As curious about me as I was about them. It was magical! . . After sailing through the busy Singapore and Malacca Straits, we thought the hardest part was behind us. Instead, we found ourselves navigating through hundreds of fishing boats and nets as we continued north towards Pangkor. Fortunately we made this section of the passage in daylight, giving us a front-row seat to some of the most fascinating fishing boats we've ever seen. After days at sea, it was a welcome relief to finally get ashore. We explore Pangkor by dinghy and paddleboard, enjoy some much-needed beach time with the boys, and take care of a few essential boat jobs before continuing north. Along the way we discover a plastic bag wrapped around the propeller, inspect a second-hand carbon jib, replace a worn autopilot ball joint, stock up on fuel, and prepare for the next stage of our journey towards Langkawi and Thailand. Unser erster Stop ist Medellin. Mit mehr als 2,6 Millionen Einwohnern ist Medellín nach der Hauptstadt Bogotá die zweitgrößte Stadt Kolumbiens. Die Stadt befindet sich derzeit im Wandel. Im Zeitraum 1990–1999 berichtet die Statistik von mehr als 45.000 Morden, erreicht aber seinen niedrigsten Stand an Tötungsdelikten im August 2007 und liegt inzwischen niedriger als so manche Stadt in den Vereinigten Staaten. Die Stadt betreibt neben den Metrolinien sechs Seilbahnlinien zu den Armenvierteln Santo Domingo und San Javier. In der Talstation der Linie K lernen wir zufällig Marcos kennen, der sich hier mit einem niederländischen Volontär getroffen hat. Während der gemeinsamen Fahrt in der Seilbahn erfahren wir bereits viel über Marcos und seine Stiftung „Angeles de Medellin“ und entscheiden uns spontan, ihn für diesen Tag in das Armenviertel „Regalo de Dios“ zu begleiten. In diesen vergessenen Stadtteilen gibt es keine befestigten Straßen und kein fließendes Wasser. Als Marcos zum ersten Mal aus dem Bundesstaat New York nach Medellín kam, begann er ehrenamtlich Englisch an einer örtlichen Schule zu unterrichten. Später eröffnete er ein Gemeindezentrum in einem gemieteten Gebäude im Stadtteil „Regalo de Dios“, wo eine Reihe von vertriebenen Familien leben. Jetzt können hier Kinder in geschützter Umgebung ihre Nachmittage mit unbeschwertem Spielen verbringen, Jugendliche und Erwachsene nehmen am Englischunterricht teil, machen einen Nähkurs oder Maniküre und Pediküre. Dafür haben wir uns einen Katamaran gekauft, mit dem wir Anfang März 2021 von der französischen Atlantikküste auf die Barfußroute gestartet sind. Seit vielen Jahren war eine Weltumsegelung mein (Hannes) großer Traum, den ich berufsbedingt zum Renteneintrittsalter verwirklichen wollte. Manchmal kommt das Leben aber anders als man plant. Im Frühjahr 2020 erhielt ich die Diagnose Morbus Parkinson. Plötzlich beschleunigte sich mein Leben erheblich, ich verkaufte mein Haus, löste den Hausrat auf und begann Berge an Schiffsausrüstung anzuschaffen. „Leinen los!“ war für Anfang März 2021geplant – und so kam es auch, trotz Corona. Brigitta war natürlich erst einmal vollkommen überrascht, obwohl eine Weltumsegelung wesentlich besser in Ihr berufliches Leben als Vorruheständlerin passte als in meins. In den letzten 6 Monaten hat Sie aber eine erstaunliche Entwicklung hinter sich gebracht und freut sich auf unser großes Abenteuer genau wie ich. Plan International ist ein internationales Kinderhilfswerk. Auf unserer Reise wollen wir nicht nur in Traumbuchten chillen sondern Programmländer von Plan besuchen und die dortige Arbeit dokumentieren.
