2018 Beneteau Oceanis 38.1 Located In: San Carlos, Mexico Year: 2018 Hull Material: GRP Molded Sandwich Construction Yachtworld Number: 3715824 Beneteau has a reputation for being a “fast” cruiser and Blue Dream definitely lives up to this reputation. Fully stocked for a prolonged cruise she can easily cruise at 7-8 knots with only 15 knots of wind. Easy to sail, all lines lead to the cockpit and are superbly organized. The cockpit is comfy with teak slats on the seats and deck. Dual helms and rudders give good handling, stability and visibility in all conditions. The swim deck is easy to dive or swim from. Additions are the solar arch, dingy davit and dingy engine hoist (2019). There is a dodger, bimini and splash guard for comfort in all weather conditions. Bow thrusters make her easy to dock and maneuver. The plumb bow, full-length hull chine and wide beam creates superior stability and exceptional high-performance sailing. It has been 20 years since we sailed our own boat on a regular basis which was a light trimaran. Large catamarans require different techniques and skills. While I sailed and crewed at a very early age, Toni had not and wanted more sailing experience and skills re-enforcement with larger catamarans, so we signed up with Nautilus Sailing in the Bahamas to combine some vacation with some learning and certifications. The experience was great, even I learned new methods of doing various tasks, safer ways of handling the heavy loaded lines, and even some things I have been doing wrong all my sailing life. I spent the summer of 2022 building a much modified 12ft Farr 3.7 singlehanded racing dinghy, which I called Kiwi. Then, before I had fully developed it, I unexpectedly bought back my 30ft Sagitta catamaran which I had sold nearly 30 years ago. That needed a lot of work and so my dinghy development took a back seat until this summer. Kiwi is very much a mongrel design. The yellow hull is the wood plug used by the UK builder when he built a grp mould. The decks are my invention - I didn't want to fit a trapeze, as on the original 1971 Bruce Farr design, instead I fitted detachable wings. The foredeck has a recessed trough to allow for the spinnaker chute. The mast, boom and rudder are from a 14ft Phantom (cut down as required). The daggerboard is a cut down Fireball centreboard. The bowsprit a Laser top section. Mainsail is a cut down Laser2000 while the spinnaker came from a RS200. Most of the deck gear I found in my spares box. So this video is the first of the nearly sorted boat. I just need to practice sailing it a lot more, as my general sail handling is still erratic, in part as I have been changing the layout after nearly every sail. Over the winter I will have a new mainsail made - hopefully one without the holes I have now! I will also move the wings further forward. I originally fitted them aft as I was unnecessarily worried about nosediving offwind. Having them further forward will make hiking when sailing to windward more comfortable. We sailed across Lake Michigan! After much planning and watching the long-term weather forecast, we checked off a major accomplishment! This adventure was a dream come true. Join us on our thrilling first sailboat crossing of Lake Michigan! 🚤⛵️ After leaving the harbor in Chicago, we headed east to Michigan City, IN. The wind was very light and appeared to be coming at us directly from Michigan City! We decided to motor to make it before nightfall. We arrived in the evening and spent the night in the marina. Early the next morning, we headed out to New Buffalo, MI where we spent the day with family. After a good night’s sleep in the marina, we got up bright and early and headed back to Chicago. Engine room, diesel exhaust, exhaust riser, stockings, enchiladas and a hot sauce comparison A few loose screws and some muscle power. We’re still trying to solve the engine exhaust leak. This time Karen joins Steve in the engine room to loosen a few screws and Steve uses his muscle power to remove the riser. Still not sure how to reconnect the riser to the flange to seal the leak. Some projects are just not as easy as anticipated and this one is a prime example of extended DIY. Karen dances in her new holiday outfit of a festive skirt and red furry Christmas stockings. They’re just the kind that Steve would like to stuff. Of course she has a red furry hat to match the swinging stockings. Culinary delights on Isabella in this episode are our homemade enchiladas. Ground grass fed beef with secret seasonings, yep, right out of the store bought package. Oops, spoiler alert. Lightly fried flour tortillas filled with the meat mixture, cheese and some sauce, rolled up and put in a pan. They are then covered with more sauce, yep another secret ingredient, topped with cheese and baked in the oven until done. Yummy. Then things got really hot. Competition out on the water today showed that it is no aberration that just two points separate the top five boats in the overall 2017 RC44 Championship. After day one the RC44 Cascais Cup leaderboard is similarly tight with just five points separating the top seven boats. Not only were there three different winners, but in each case the winner was not the leader at the first top mark rounding. The RC44 Cascais Cup is the fourth event of the 2017 RC44 Championship Tour, which pits the world's top businessmen and the best sailors in the industry compete in high-performance one-design 44-foot carbon racing yachts. En este segundo tramo durante unos 5 o 6 días estuvimos recibiendo pequeñas tormentas, que nos obligaba a estar pendientes de recoger trapo. La rutina se apodera a estas altura de la navegación, pasando las guardias y tramos de descanso de forma continuada.

In this Podcast episode I describe fixing the mainsail on Spartan and deciding to go 'hell for leather' from now on in the Velux 5 Oceans Race. I describe what it was like to find the will to carry on when I was already so completely exhausted and how that has become a very beneficial lesson in my life. In the 'Questions & Tangents' section I answer a question sent to me via Instagram asking 'What was a never ending puzzle I had to deal with as I sailed around the world?' Great question and I hope the answer is long enough and rambling enough for you! I go on to outline the Ocean Global Race that Spartan will be entering in 2023- this will be an event that is open to everyone however participants will need to be aware of the dollar cost of being part of such a crew and the need for proper training both practical and theoretical. Lastly I announce the new Spartan On-line Seamanship Training we are releasing in April- this will provide a three tier training system that should push past where RYA training (or similar) takes you and provides you with a structured system that will give you new confidence and ability when offshore. Individual units will begin at $200 dollars going up to packages that will also purchase an option to be on the Round the World team in 2023. More details on that coming soon.
