Two full seasons dedicated to the RC44 class paid off today for Russian Alexander Novoselov, his American tactician Andy Horton and the crew of Katusha, when they won their first ever RC44 Championship event. Sardinia’s Costa Smeralda has offered the complete range of conditions for the nine teams racing at the RC44 Porto Cervo Cup this week, from very light to very strong. Despite a forecast indicating the wind would drop off, today it was definitely the latter. Yesterday’s Mistral conditions had abated slightly, the 25+ knot westerlies being at the very top of what RC44s and their crews can endure. 24 hours sailing. We are arriving in Rabbat where we are greeted by locals giving us fish and wanting some whiskey in return :) Then at the harbor, where the police and customs where waiting, we where instantly confronted with their problem with my flags. Then after having a look at my boat papers they told us to leave. They didn't look real?!?!? I've been sailing with these papers for over 2 years and never had problems? We had a long trip from Gibraltar, where tired and we where not allowed even one night!! They kicked us out into the night again. Not a warm welcome Marocco. After checking out of New Caledonia, we sail north up the west coast before turning and heading to Chesterfield Reef. On our last night as we get closer to we begin to see birds. We have a little bird make the boat its home overnight, whilst several boobies attempt to land, one finally working out the solar panel was a better place to target. After a 3 night passage, we arrive in the morning ready to begin exploring the remote uninhabited string of sand cays called Chesterfield Reef.

La 1ère plongée a été assez décevante car aucune faune autour de l'épave comme on en voit régulièrement tels que des langoustes, des raies, des tortues ainsi que toute sorte de poissons. C'était le vide total et l'épave n'était pas très intéressante. L'hélice en bronze a été récupérée pour être refondue. La 2ème plongée a été plus intéressante. Elle a eu lieu à une profondeur de 12m autour d'un récif qui grouillait de poissons et langoustes. Les coraux étaient magnifiques et en bonne santé. Les 2 plongées ont été des dérivantes. Il faut se munir d'un parachute afin de le lancer lors de la remontée en surface. Il semblerait qu'il y a une superbe plongée à faire sur l'épave Hema qui est située au large et dont on peut observer des requins nourrice et des raies léopard. Made significant progress on lots of jobs this week building on the foundations from previous weeks. The Bow Roller is finally permanently fitted!! The Windlass is bolted into place on a new framework. The chain locker (with temporary sides) holds the chain and has a working prototype chute from the windlass. We now have proper marine shore power with Victron Socket, Isolation Transformer and MultiPlus II Two and a half years ago, when we bought Vida, she was in a very tired and damp condition with all original equipment and fittings (much of it not working). We have removed all the gas, diesel, and paraffin equipment as well as all the plumbing and electrics. We have composting toilets, are installing an electric motor and all electric cooking. We are fitting a huge solar array and probably a wind generator. We have replaced all the windows, removed all the headlining and more. We are replacing all the standing rigging with Dyneema synthetic rigging. This is the biggest sustainability project of our lives as we prepare for a retirement when we want to cruise the world using zero fossil fuels on a very low budget. Moving the sailboat north and the challenges we had to overcome.

Outremer is proud to support women in sailing, and has launched a multi-media campaign to celebrate International Women's Day and the ongoing success of its dedicated "Ladies Only" programs. The campaign features a short series of entertaining videos that looks at men and women in sailing, and the biased narratives that sometimes exists between them.

We recently held our first event and open night at our Gold Coast office, where we debuted our newest range of Regal boats we have in stock. It was a fantastic opportunity to invite our Queensland customers to not only come and view the new boats and experience a test drive on the Broadwater but also to get to meet them in person and enjoy some food and drinks all while admiring the afternoon sunset. One of our biggest challenges with Reverie is that the portlights (deadlights) were seriously abused. They were cracked and the glass was completely hazed to the point you could not see outside. We were concerned with replacing them as Reverie being a 1985 Pearson Sailboat, we did not know if we would be able to find an exact replacement. But we lucked out! Beckson Marine makes the exact same size portlight (window) as the one we needed and to give us a bonus, they also made a portlight version that was the same size and had an integrated portlight with screen. This gave us the opportunity to add two additional portlights for ventilation. The installation was relatively easy, but it had its challenges. In modern boats, manufacturers realized that they needed to stiffen the area around the windows in order to prevent leaks over time. So at the factory they filled the space between the deck and deck liner with an epoxy compound. This creates a bond between the liner and deck and provides a solid surface to screw the windows without creating compression issues or install glued-on windows like you see in most modern boats. Unfortunately, that was not the case with Reverie. So we had to start doing research and putting on out thinking hats to find a solution to our problem which we did!. This Murray Burns and Dovell design is highly regarded as one of the best models to come out of the Sydney Yachts factory and in Philosopher, we have undoubtedly the best Sydney 36CR in Australia. Philosopher was originally built and tailored for renowned local sailor Peter Sorenson and was highly optimised to further improve on a design that was already revered for their outstanding performance. Along with other enhancements, she received a bigger fore-triangle, larger headsails, a sugar scoop to increase her waterline length when healing and a Fred Barret designed carbon bow sprit, all of which contributed to significant performance gains both upwind and downwind. Her results speak for themselves….. IRC Australian overall champion 2008, IRC Divisional Champion 2011, 2018 and 2019, 1st in division on IRC, ORCI and Corinthian in the 2019 Sydney to Hobart and most recently, 1st IRC Two Handed division, 1st IRC division 2 in the 2023 Sydney to Gold Coast Race, and 1st IRC Two Handed division in the 2023 Bird Island….. and the list of podiums goes on. Her sail wardrobe is simply too extensive to list here, a number of which were new in 2023 and her electronics package is second to none. She is powered by a 28hp Yanmar diesel engine with a sail drive and has a two blade Gori prop.
