Over time the bolt that attaches the foil to the in-mast furler mechanism wears an elongated hole in the foil itself and sometimes actually cracks the foil and breaks the base off. So this maintenance video shows how I repair that fault and reinforce that area. About a year ago you might have seen that when we're in denier on the east coast of Spain I had a problem with the manual fuller. At the time I noticed some hole 'creep' in the foil where the the bolt goes through. Over time the bolt had been grinding itself out a little elongated hole. So I thought I'd check it again a year later and the polyester filler that i put in had all cracked away. I kind of suspected that would happen because i had no actual binder at the time and the temporary fix was just too brittle. So I didn't think an epoxy repair by itself would actually cut it anymore so what I did was drop the foil a little and cut off the end with an angle grinder and re-drilled the hole. But this time I put in an aluminium sleeve and filled around it with a polyester resin containing fibreglass pieces. Then i fitted the foil retainer back onto the manual furler. The furler has four delrin spacers that fit between the outside of the mast and the actual manual furler itself, so the bolts have to fit through the mast through the spacers and into the manual furler. This is a much easier job with two people because somebody can hold the furlers in place while somebody puts the little delrin bushes in bolts it all in place. We search for the Sanko Harvest and despite it being the second largest wreck dive in the world and the largest off the Australian coast cannot find it. We then move to Lucky Bay, the most quintessentially Australian place possible, with Kangaroos on the whitest beach in Australia (officially measured)! The sand is blindingly white made up of fine pure quartz that squeaks as you walk across it. Getting our scuba gear out we dive in crystal clear water where we find several Common Sea Dragons, with one male even carrying eggs (not the female), bait balls putting on spectacular show, Cuttlefish, several Blue Devils, and we also find the very elusive Leafy Sea Dragons. Heute geht es mit der Teilung des Ankerkastens weiter, ich baue zwei USB Steckdosen ein und beginne mit dem Säubern und Schleifen des Rumpfes Unser Segelboot Squib, ein Catalac 9M, ist in die Jahre gekommen, die Verkleidung hängt teilweise von der Decke, die Farbe blättert ab, die Elektrik auf dem Stand des vorigen Jahrtausends,..... Ein Refit steht an. Doch Broterwerb und Verpflichtungen lassen es nicht zu, monatelang in Griechenland am Boot zu arbeiten. Da wird schon 2018 die Idee geboren Squib nach Wien zu bringen, wo man jederzeit Zugang hat, der Einkauf von Material in der Muttersprache abgewickelt werden kann und alles Andere seinen gewohnten Verlauf nimmt. 2021 war es dann endlich soweit, mit zwei komplett überholten Motoren und einem neuen Geräteträger starteten wir Anfang Juli Richtung Südfrankreich.Leider hatten wir für die gesamte Reise nur zwei Monate Zeit, deswegen hieß es die meiste Zeit Strecke machen. Doch manchmal nahmen wir uns die Zeit zu verweilen, uns Orte näher anzuschauen. Santa Ana Winds were blowing strong on January 7, 2025. Devastation hit Los Angeles California as wildfires swept across the region. We were out on the water in Long Beach Harbor aboard Raptor II, a 2024 J112E, owned and skippered by Heinz Butner. The race today was a 6.1 nautical mile competition in the Salty Sailors Pursuit Race. The Santa Ana Winds were predicted to blow 40-60 MPH across Southern California. Contrary to the prediction, the wind on the water was not as strong as predicted, so many boats decided not to race. The wind finally shifted to the north with gusts increasing to 20 knots by the end of the race. Raptor II passed Loose Change (J40 boat) with only minutes remaining in the race. It was a wild finish to the competition. This video was taken on my 7th trans-atlantic crossing, from the Canaries to Prickley Bay, Grenada - via the Cape Verdes - in late 2024. I was on board a Dutch 11m Nimble catamaran with two other crew. We generally had light winds and calm seas, in fact gentle enough so that on most days I could have sailed my dinghy. My first three trans-atlantics were with boats without autopilots, so we had to hand steer all the way. These days it's very different, there's no need to steer (nor, of course, navigate by sextant) unless something goes wrong with the autopilot or electronics. So this was something of a boring trip - reflected in the video I guess. With no real stress there was plenty of time for reading and relaxing. Thus the video shows no exciting moments, because there weren't any - which is as it should be when ocean cruising. As always, there is no audio on this short video.
