Voor de feestdagen blijven we op Tenerife en Felia komt aan boord. Gezamenlijk maken we een kerstdiner met wat we hebben en we genieten van het vuurwerk in de haven. Met een huurauto rijden we langs alle highlights van het eiland. Patrick schaft een bijna professionele hengel aan waarmee de aanvoer van verse vis tijdens overtochten gegarandeerd moet zijn. Met oud- en nieuw bakken we volgens traditie oliebollen. Dit keer op de steiger in de haven. We nemen afscheid van Anita. Jord, Lars en Naomi komen aan boord. Samen maken we een stevige wandeling de vulkaan op. Jarenlang heb ik ervan gedroomd om zeilend te gaan waar de wind me brengt. In 2020 was het dan eindelijk zover en heb ik samen met Felia een prachtige reis gemaakt naar Scandinavië en de Baltische staten. Onze Eva, een Atlantic 43 uit 2007, is een aluminium zeiljacht met hefkiel en gebouwd en uitgerust voor reizen naar plaatsen die net achter de horizon liggen. Vanaf 2021 vaar ik met wisselende bemanning zuidwaarts. Ik vind het leuk om onze avonturen met jullie te delen. In this episode, we solo sail to Hen Rock, Catalina Island. Before heading out, we pick up 58.1 gal $(340) diesel at Jankovich fuel dock. The auto pilot was not operating on the way to the island, so we hand steered the entire passage. We were able to sail the entire distance to Hen Rock and then had a nice visit with the crew of sv Shearwater. Fortunately, the auto pilot worked on the return trip. We saw 3 whales plus a couple of rissos dolphins.

In this episode Anita likes to learn a bit more about sailing. We go ziplining to get over her fear of hights. Anita jumps in with dolphins and we get engine problems that almost washed us on shore. Da wird schon 2018 die Idee geboren Squib nach Wien zu bringen, wo man jederzeit Zugang hat, der Einkauf von Material in der Muttersprache abgewickelt werden kann und alles andere seinen gewohnten Verlauf nimmt. 2021 war es dann endlich soweit, mit zwei komplett überholten Motoren und einem neuen Geräteträger starteten wir Anfang Juli Richtung Südfrankreich.Leider hatten wir für die gesamte Reise nur zwei Monate Zeit, deswegen hieß es die meiste Zeit Strecke machen. Doch manchmal nahmen wir uns die Zeit zu verweilen, uns Orte näher anzuschauen. Unser Segelboot Squib, ein Catalac 9M, ist in die Jahre gekommen, die Verkleidung hängt teilweise von der Decke, die Farbe blättert ab, die Elektrik auf dem Stand des vorigen Jahrtausends,..... Ein Refit steht an. Doch Broterwerb und Verpflichtungen lassen es nicht zu, monatelang in Griechenland am Boot zu arbeiten. Da wird schon 2018 die Idee geboren Squib nach Wien zu bringen, wo man jederzeit Zugang hat, der Einkauf von Material in der Muttersprache abgewickelt werden kann und alles Andere seinen gewohnten Verlauf nimmt. 2021 war es dann endlich soweit, mit zwei komplett überholten Motoren und einem neuen Geräteträger starteten wir Anfang Juli Richtung Südfrankreich.Leider hatten wir für die gesamte Reise nur zwei Monate Zeit, deswegen hieß es die meiste Zeit Strecke machen. Doch manchmal nahmen wir uns die Zeit zu verweilen, uns Orte näher anzuschauen. “Alondra”, designed by the renowned Sparkman & Stephens (#1598) was built in 1961 in Bremen Germany by Burmester. Between 2019 and 2023 she has been beautifully restored to her former glory (by the current owner) in Barcelona by Marcelo Penna Yachts under the management of Benoit Duval. The restoration has been documented in great detail with photos, together with a final survey available. A stunning classic yacht with ample accommodation for six guests with en-suite bathrooms and three crew members in their own quarters. On deck there is a large dining area which can also be enclosed.

In this week’s video, we install a Winchmax windlass remote on Lady Aquitaine the yacht of Patreons Ian & Dasha a 57ft Hanse. After Ian’s wander lead failed somewhere deep in the boat’s wiring loom, we helped them safely get on a buoy and rigged a temporary fix so they could still anchor. We then ordered a Winchmax unit for just £42.95, which Cindy brought back with her. Fast forward a few days, and Ian’s boat now has full remote control of the windlass from anywhere onboard—sorted! Elsewhere in the episode, our Tohatsu 3.5hp outboard we are repairing gives us a big headache and there are daytime fireworks and fighting fish making things lively around the boat. It has a length of 1,432 metres and lifts boats through 67.73 metres vertically. It consists of two large caissons mounted on rails. Each caisson has a water depth between 3 and 3.70 metres. It can carry one boat of 1,350 tonnes or many smaller boats within the same limits. Each caisson has a 5,200-tonne counterweight running in the trough below the rails. It takes 50 minutes in total to pass through the 1,800 metres of the entire structure, including the raised canal bridge at the top end. We were astounded by the scale and ingenuity of this innovative structure. This video goes into quite a lot of detail regarding the engineering behind this ship lift, and has been created with the intention of answering many of the questions a viewer may have about the Ronquieres Boat Lift.
