PHOEBE FINALLY HOOKS UP ON THE TROLL! 😄 It's been almost a year in the making for that one and it's timely for it to happen on one of the last few passages back home to the Northern Rivers! This episode we explore the ins and outs of full-time cruising: finding the causes of strange electrical noises onboard, learning quickly from foolish mistakes, exploring ashore, setting the boat up perfectly to harness as much wind as possible and enjoying the relief of motoring on a glass out. Every wind change brings forth new lessons and seas for us to navigate - but we know that as long as we're doing it together we can handle anything! We’re a little behind on our videos - we’re just having too much fun! So to connect with us in real time, you can find us on our new FaceBook page: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61551024568844 For ad-free and early release episodes, behind the scenes content and live updates, check out our Patreon! In this video I tour the famous English Harbor Antigua. I look at where sailboats go to die and go to heaven. We look at an Amel 54 and a billion dollars worth of super yachts. The best thing you can do in paradise is look around and identify the different types of sailboats that have made it to this island in the middle of the Caribbean. Bringing Yabá from wreck to dreamy! Episode 121 In this episode of our boat restoration, we're taking our boat to the next level by adding an essential safety feature. We are Ben and MP! Recently we decided to purchase a two-masted wooden schooner in Brazil. The fun detail about our story is that the boat we bought was sinking and relying on many bilge pumps to survive so we had to lift it onto the dry to start a full refit. Once the boat was lifted (for the first time in her life) we realized that the work needed was much more than expected. Between bailing or accepting the challenge, we decided to go for the second option. Watch us as we bring Yabá back to life with the help of an amazing team of traditional shipwrights, sharing every phase of the process, overcoming the highs and lows and having fun along the way. More about us: 👉 About us + Q&A https://youtu.be/TldDlohjwTs 👉 our website with more info about the project http://www.sailingyaba.com 💙 Massive thanks to our amazing team of carpenters that never let us down and continue to amaze us at every step of the process: Toninho, Zeca, Hélio, Claiton, William, Nezo, Nico, Adilson, Beto and Luiz. http://features.boats.com/boat-content/2013/05/10-tips-on-how-to-paint-a-nonskid-deck/ For more how to videos, visit www.boats.com. Welcome to our shop and Matsya our 1938 Herreshoff Marlin. Today I will show you how to prep and paint an easy do it yourself non-skid finish on your deck. First you need to have the right tools. You could hand sand the deck but the time it would take and quality of the prep would not be as good. For this job I use two different power sanders with 40, 80, and 120 grit paper for both sanders. The first sander is a 6" random orbital sander. The second is a trim sander. Both sanders have hook and Loup connection with the paper. So changing paper is easy, which you should do often. Before sanding the surface tape off all the edges. This is important so you do not scratch the finish next to the non-skid, and Matsya has a nice varnish finish. First we'll use the 6" random orbital sander. With this sander you do not have to push hard; just keep it level with the surface and let the sander do the work. Work the sander in a pattern and check the surface often. There are two ways to use the trim sander; one is flat and the other is using the edges. For around this winch I will do both. First I will use the edge to get right up to the winch, and then I'll use it flat to taper in to where the 6" sander was used. Now that I have prepped the surface to a smooth finish I will remove the sanding tape. Yes, you have to tape twice. The tape used during sanding will be scratched and will also have dust. As long as the surface has all been sanded smooth don't worry about different materials showing through. Just don't go too deep; all you need is to make it smooth. The manufacture will say you don't have to remove all the old non-skid, but to do a quality job you should remove all the rough surfaces. With Matsya we have to be extra careful since she has a canvas deck over plywood. All you need is a relatively smooth surface to apply the non-skid paint. Once you have the surface prepped, tack cloth it to remove the dust after you have pulled the sanding tape. The dust will not add to the non-skid, it will only reduce the adhesion of the paint. So use a tack cloth and wipe down the surface. Next we tape for the non-skid paint application. Here is a tip for taping prior to applying the non-skid paint: always start where you will finish up the application. Use 18" -- 24" strips of nice edge tape. The tape overlaps will allow you to pull the tape ahead of it while you are painting. See how I put small tabs on the tape so it is easy to grab. You must pull the tape within 10 min on a 70-degree day such as today. If not you will have a job on your hands getting the tape off and it you may damage the finish on what is underneath. Here we go ready to paint, the new tape is on and the surface is smooth and tacked. I'll use a 4" chip brush and then roll the paint out with the special roller needed for Kiwi Grip. A rag wet with water will clean up any drips since this paint is acrylic latex. I lightly stirred with a paint stick not to create air. This paint is a yogurt consistency (show paint on stick). Now you will see why we have strips of tape. You MUST keep a wet edge to have a consistent look. I will roll the paint out three times. The first two times are to remove air and are 90 degrees from each other. Then the amount of pressure you use the third time will affect how coarse the non-skid will be. I like to do the final roll out in the long direction of the deck. For the top of the house I will try to get a medium grit finish. Here is her deck painted and cured.

As many of you may know Ian likes sailing on his own, so when he found out that our yacht club was running a couple of races this year just for single, and double handed competitors he was looking forward to competing Unfortunately Sea Horse was still in transit back from the Solent when the first race was held earlier in the year but he was all fired up and ready for the second one. Unfortunately the weather had other ideas and the competitors were greeted by a blustery 20+ knots ripping down the river, with some prolonged gusts of even more. Still this didn't stop 10 yachts from entering with Ian the only one in the end taking part single handed. This is the story of the race. Music from http://www.purple-planet.com/

Our bad luck seemed to continue to follow us in the Marshall Islands and we lost our GoPro to the ocean... Finally all the spare parts arrived and most importantly, the rudder arrived and we installed it in the water. We also changed the propeller shaft sealing which turned out to be a bit more tricky than we thought it would be. We also got our Visas to USA and we look forward to go there this spring! Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V700 with a Rode External mic with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action, underwater scenes and small blogging is done with two Osmo action cams. Some boat shots are done with a Dji gimbal camera. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. See Ep. 2 and + to get tutorial videos - DIY carbon bike frame slideshow. I used almost 5 meters of 170g carbon clothe (6oz 3K twill weave carbon fiber) with a little bit more than 1 L of epoxy resin. I used vacuum bagging process with separate styrofoam parts. More videos to come winter 2020.

Bem vindos a bordo!!! In this episode we go into the detail necessary to create a reliable, robust navigational system onboard. You MUST be self reliant to be offshore in our view. Our setup doesn't appear convenient at first, however the further you sail, it will be for reasons explained in the video. We replaced the radar dome as the 4g unit failed also. Since writing the VHF has also failed from BandG along with our GPS sensor. So you get the picture here folks...... We write from safety now in Costa Rica and next episode we will explore the dangers and the solutions we had on the navigation to Costa Rica. For those interested to replicate this setup: Linksys 5g router, Navico Halo 20 (resentfully purchased). Cat 5 crimper and cables to make new rj45 connection. Opencpn software https://opencpn.org/ You must install the radar Pi plugin as part of the opencpn plugins section and connect your computer to the new 5g network you created over wifi. Put the radar cable into the router. Also, you will need a fairly decent cpu or GPU in your laptop or desktop to run the radar over wifi. My raspberry pi 4 didn´t cut it. actisense usb multiplexer https://actisense.com/products/ngt-1-nmea-2000-to-pc-interface/ for max detail, go here. https://github-wiki-see.page/m/opencpn-radar-pi/radar_pi/wiki/Hardware-installation-%28Navico%29 If I were to do it all again, I would get this https://www.vespermarine.com/cortex Never give up, keep the sails up, keel down and Carry on! It’s time to leave Alaska and continue cruising in British Columbia, Canada! But first we visit the southern most town in Alaska, Ketchikan and enjoy a perfect downwind sail to Prince Rupert in BC. We meet up with Alfy and Devlin from the YouTube channel Life Is Like Sailing and have a chat about what it's like to sail in BC. Interview starts at: 15:34 Life Is Like Sailing channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/bcsailor2003 We are a Swedish couple who wanted a different kind of life. So we moved aboard our sailboat RAN, a custom built Beason 40 in aluminium, untied the lines in the middle of the Swedish winter, January 2016, and started sailing south along the coast of Europe. Outboard power gives her the ability to explore backwaters and out-of-the-way coves, in addition to the obvious advantages of reduced maintenance.

But after our recent 48 hour offshore passage up the Adriatic to Montenegro, we’re now hunkered down in Porto Montenegro Marina, which is the perfect place for us to experience a bit of luxury for a change among one of the most stunning landscapes in the Mediterranean. But Montenegro is just one part of a fascinating region. The countries that made up the former Yugoslavia have a unique and complicated history. They’re ethnically, linguistically, and culturally very distinct from the rest of Europe. And the story of the rise and fall of Yugoslavia highlights the incredible power that uniting diverse human groups can create as well as the awful conflicts that can follow when that unity breaks down. So this week we get to experience some of that history first hand, we get to try some traditional cuisine, and we explore the region via powerboat to discover some of the fascinating legends that make this country so intriguing.
