This week aboard Stella Overboard, boat life throws a few more problems our way. From discovering the main pin holding our boom to the mast had started working its way out, to watermaker issues, outboard problems, lazy jack repairs, and the never-ending reality of fixing things in remote places… this episode is a pretty accurate look at what cruising life is really like. Luckily, we’ve learned that sailing is mostly about figuring things out with what you have, carrying as many spares as possible, doing a little creative jimmy-rigging, searching the internet, and accepting help from the amazing people you meet along the way. Esta reformado por dentro y por fuera por mí mismo con la inestimable ayuda de José Muñoz. Cuando lo compre estaba muy abandonado en cuanto a mantenimiento y mejoras. Pero ojo....su antiguo propietario cruzo tres veces el Océano Atlántico en solitario con este velero de menos de diez metros. Acompáñame en este video y veras como los barcos aunque tengan cuarenta años pueden estar en perfecto estado de conservación si ponemos esfuerzo, trabajo y cariño. Os contaré un poco sobre la historia de este modelo. Se hizo muy famoso tras la trágica regata Fastnet de 1979. En esta regata cruzaron la línea de salida 303 barcos de diferentes modelos y esloras, solo 86 terminaron. Por desgracia hubo 19 muertes, a pesar de las más de 4.000 personas que se movilizaron, ejército, salvamento marítimo, etc… para rescatar a los tripulantes de barcos hundidos o abandonados. Las predicciones meteorológicas anunciaron para esta regata vientos de fuerza 6, pudiendo subir a 7 de la escala Beaufort. Por lo visto llegaron a soplar vientos de fuerza 11 (56 a 63 nudos), esto es un temporal muy duro casi huracanado, vamos un desastre para cualquier barco. ESTE MODELO FUE EL ÚNICO DE SU CLASE QUE TERMINO LA REGATA. A partir de ahí, sus cualidades marineras para ganar regatas y soportar temporales se hicieron muy famosas. Para los Ingleses es un barco de culto, de hecho tienen una clase muy bien organizada con su campeonato nacional de regatas con este modelo, además de un foro, página de Facebook, etc... Big waves, a very wet Showgirl, and unfortunately those leaks are becoming VERY noticeable. I really thought we had figured them all out before the start. Apparently not. 😂 This is probably the first reminder that no matter how much you prepare a boat, the ocean is always going to find something you missed. Brutal - The word crews have been using to describe the opening stages of the Ocean Race Atlantic. The upwind start was uncomfortable enough but then the fleet engaged with a weather system that looked capable of carrying them across the Atlantic. The catch? Sailing close to the trailing edge of a cold front, where strong breeze promises speed — but the wind direction and sea state don’t align. Most had the pace to stay with the system but few had the speed to break through the front into a more organised sea state where they could properly put their foot to the floor. The result: fast sailing, boat breaking seas and a relentless battering for the crews. During Race Week we caught up with Bruce Taylor who was sailing on David Currie’s Farr 40 Ponyo. Sadly, they lost the top of their mast early in the regatta. He talked about plans for sailing at Magnetic Island Race Week and also about an important milestone that will come up for three of his Chutzaph crew in the 2027 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race.
