We sail peacfully through the night and suddenly the boat stops! The rudder and prop got caught in a massive floating fishing net that extends for miles and was not lit. My sailboat Karl is hanging in the net whilst a 2 knot current is pushing the boat into the lines of the net. The wind is coming from the stern, unfortunately, so we need to take the main sail down with a good breeze in it. Not an easy task... First we try to free the net with a stick, but it is too far down and too big, so there is nothing left to do but dive into the deep, dark and skary water. Fortunately, the phosphorescense light up the net, so I can see where I have to cut. A line is wapped around my waste so I won't float away...still, it's a bit of a scary task...if I cut the net and get caught in it by accident, there will be a massive pull in the moment it floats away. Plus, I don't wanna know who else is down there with me in this dark body of water. Apart from that, we had an awesome sail from Jaramijo to Isla Plata, also called Poor Man's Galapagos. Sailing in a poorly charted area of Indonesia not mentioned in guide books means finding a new way to navigate. Our ability to seek out and find remote isolated anchorages has been transformed by the use of satellite images for navigation. In this episode we share how using satellite images and eyeball navigation makes it possible to find remote un-spoilt locations to explore on the edge of the Indian Ocean. Destinations which are not in any travel guides and quite possibly have never been visited by sailing yachts before. How to navigate without charts: Using satellite images to navigate instead of a chart is becoming more common in the cruising world. Navigating via a photo and what you can see with your eyes may sound daunting at first to those used to well charted waters, but once you get used to this new navigation method it opens up whole new areas for exploration. When you first start out, it’s pretty intimidating to kick your fins up, point your head down, and to just keep going deeper and deeper, as you feel the water getting colder, the increasing pressure squeezing on your chest, and the light from above slowly fading into a dim twilight. But once you overcome your fear the reward is the sensation of absolute freedom, of weightless flight through a strange world with zero equipment. We’ve practiced freediving for years and the deepest that we’ve ever gone was 100 feet, so about the height of a ten story building. But a couple hundred years ago some of the best free divers in the world lived on the Greek island of Symi. Those divers could go as deep as 260 feet and could stay down for up to 4 minutes! But this was a very dangerous activity, and for generations divers from Symi swam to the ocean floor and risked their lives, all in pursuit of a treasure that made their small and arid island one of the wealthiest places in the entire region. Now last week we finally sailed away from Turkey after having spent 6 months exploring that country. And with Symi being the first stop on our journey across the Mediterranean, we wanted to figure out just what treasure attracted generations of divers to risk their lives combing the sea floor. Getting the nib-ends of these full-length planks fitted into the rabbet fore and aft is one of the hardest tasks of planking Arabella. Since we don't have any wiggle room to move fore or aft, the cuts need to be dead-on for the planks to sit correctly. Additionally, since shutter planks are sandwiched by planks above and below, the lack of space makes it difficult to observe all around the piece being worked. Here we get a great look at what it takes for Steve and Carolyn do these final fits, and then Steve works on switching how we support Arabella with our friends Pete and Kourtney (Accidental Sailor Girl here on YouTube) so that we can remove temporary bracing from areas where we'll be fitting sheer strakes. Have you ever wondered what's under a cruise ship pier? We kind of have and the Frederiksted Pier on the West side of St. Croix was the perfect place to find out! We could NOT BELIEVE how much sea life was under the pier and also how many friendly turtles there were! SO COOL! This has got to be one of the top things to do in St. Croix!
