In this installment we have a riveting good time attaching a cedar plank to the hull. We then install a pair of black locust butt blocks in Arabella to support the nib ends of the oak stealers. Another cedar plank gets sliced out of the raw board and it's many knots repaired. Finally a notice that our Open House is postponed due to Covid and a really big thank you! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Acorn to Arabella wishlist: http://www.acorntoarabella.com/acorn-to-arabella-wishlist Jamestown Distributors Referral: If you are going to shop at Jamestown Distributors, please consider using our Total Boat referral code: http://totalboat.refr.cc/steveandalixa?t=tg FOLLOW US: Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/acorntoarabella Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/acorntoarabella/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/acorntoarabella Website: http://www.acorntoarabella.com
Part 66 of a series: Sailing Tampa Bay to Key West. Arrival in Venice Florida with our trailer sailer begins with mooring at Pop's Sunset Grill and Tiki Bar. Exploring further south we have to navigate dangerous waters with cautionary signs that read "local knowledge only". We ignore the warnings and proceed to the hidden Nokomo's Sunset Hut where we make new friends. MORE VIDEOS on Patreon! https://www.patreon.com/Barefootsailingadventures
What an island! Palm trees a plenty, gentle sea breezes and full time Bikinis! This place is next level! https://www.sailingnandji.com In this episode of Sailing Nandji, we are anchored at the beautiful Liapari island. This small island is off the southern tip of Vella Lavella island in the Northern area of the Solomon islands. We had always planned to visit the lagoon of Liapari island as we had read about the safety of the anchorage and that this place is basically the only place where we could get things repaired in the Solomons. But when we went exploring, this island uncovered some magical places that we would struggle to dream up in our own minds! Enjoy!!! Patrons! Captain Steve from BoatTest.com tests the new Swift Trawler 30 by Beneteau. The new Swift Trawler 30 represents Beneteau's continuing quest to define the trawler as it should be. Designed for traveling long distances as much as for enjoying anchorages and stopovers, her open layout is wonderful for any voyage. Incredibly ingenious, the rear cockpit converts into a spacious terrace over the sea, while the flybridge, with a small lounge and steering station, creates a completely separate living space. Tour the Swift Trawler 30 : http://bit.ly/2MwWbDL ________________________________________________________________ The Beneteau story began more than 130 years ago when Benjamin Beneteau started building fishing trawlers in Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie, France. Today, Beneteau has grown to over twenty manufacturing facilities in France, Italy, Brazil and the United States and has become the worldwide leader in sailboats manufacturing. The Beneteau product lines now include sailboats Oceanis, First and Sense, and powerboats Gran Turismo, Swift Trawler, Barracuda and Monte Carlo. Consider buying your future boat now as trends towards a buyer's market. Buying a boat is a big investment for any buyer and comes with plenty of substantial decisions for you and your family, so making sure you purchase at the right time is key. As boat prices have risen and fluctuated in the past few years due to supply chain turmoil, many prospective buyers have been biding their time, keeping an eye on the market and waiting for it to stabilize for the best possible time to buy in. Fortunately, the approaching summer season promises a return to normalcy for boaters and dealers across all communities. Now, after years of steadily increasing prices and low stock, the market is once again starting to find its footing. If you've been waiting, now may be the time to consider buying. Your future boat may be closer than you think. Trends now show that the market will favor the buyer. Dealers have been reporting prices that have stopped increasing, with some areas reporting that their prices are beginning to decrease. Improving supply chains and construction lead times mean that dealer inventories are full of new boats available to buy. This year, buyers will have access to a greater amount of inventory and availability, as well as great prices. Learn more: https://www.beneteau.com/en-us -- About BENETEAU -- The first BENETEAU boats sailed from the shipyards of Croix-de-Vie over 139 years ago. Since that time, the BENETEAU brand has been synonymous with quality and innovation to all those who have taken to the water – first by the fishermen who made their livelihood from the sea and then by the legions of recreational boaters around the globe. Over the years, our commitment to innovating and embracing ideas, no matter how unconventional, has been at the forefront of who we are in order to bring you the best boat possible. BENETEAU was one of the first boatbuilders many years ago to use computer-aided design (CAD) as well as lighter, stronger composite building materials. We’ve also been at the cutting edge of using greener materials and processes to do our part in protecting the incredible world which we explore. However, all this innovation doesn’t mean we’ve turned our back on tradition. One thing we’ve discovered in over a century of boatbuilding is that new-world innovations work best with old-school craftsmanship. This combination has resulted in some of the most iconic sailboats and powerboats in the world – supremely seaworthy yachts renowned for their sense of style, luxury, and comfort along with their creative use of space and new technologies. -- Philosophy -- We’re a lot like you. We love the water in all its forms – the ocean, bays, lakes, and rivers. And we love sharing the boating lifestyle with our family and friends. This love manifests itself in every BENETEAU built in any one of our many manufacturing facilities worldwide. Every BENETEAU sailboat and powerboat on the water reflects the best efforts of the finest architects, designers, and craftsmen along with the highest quality materials and the latest innovations. When you purchase a BENETEAU, you become a valued member of our BENETEAU family. For this reason, our after-sale service is second to none as evidenced by the multitude of National Marine Manufacturers CSI Awards for Excellence in Customer Service. At the core of this outstanding service is our exceptional dealer network. Every one of our authorized BENETEAU dealers will be there for you – from choosing the right yacht to the handover and beyond. Your dealer will be your able guide when it comes to maintaining your boat properly and will help you maximize the return on your investment when it comes time to step up to another BENETEAU – and it usually does! We wouldn’t have it any other way.

The past two weeks we’ve been exploring the Maltese Islands and it has been a totally unbelievable experience. We’ve been filling our days with everything we love the most, hiking, swimming, exploring in the dinghy, and getting to live off-grid out in nature. But what we’re about to experience is going to top the list of our all time favorite anchorages. And the craziest part of all this has been just how unexpected it’s been. We sailed across the atlantic and came to Malta because we thought it would be a good place to have our baby. We knew that the centuries old cities and fortresses would be super cool to explore, but we had no idea that this rather urban country would have so much jaw dropping nature to sink our teeth into. There's a Wharram Tiki 46 available within my budget, but there's a big catch. This one is in Costa Rica, not the ideal place to rebuild a project boat. But will I take the risk? What a fun couple of weeks! We do a little crazy driving in Grenada, catch a very nice size Wahoo (that's a fish). 96 Nordhavn Yacht Walkthrough [LACEY KAY] Specs + Photos: https://hubs.ly/Q01XWBcG0 Asking Price: $9,950,000 Location: West Palm Beach, Florida Kurt Bosshardt // 954.478.0356 // KurtB@DenisonYachting.com In 2017, Pacific Asian Enterprises (PAE) expanded their Nordhavn line with the addition of the Nordhavn 96. Being well received by the exploration yacht community, the Nordhavn 96 won the 2017 International Yacht and Aviation Award. Lacey Kay was the third in this line, just after the launching of Vivierae II. This new design bridged the gap between the large cruising exploration yacht and super-yacht categories. She was designed for the yachting enthusiast who seeks the super-yacht comfort and style in a boat that is still able to be managed with no or minimal crew, and travel big open oceans. The 96 series is based on the hull of the very successful Nordhavn 86, while incorporating a larger cockpit, lazarette, and better crew space below deck. The greater volume is also felt on the main deck level, in the dining and galley areas, and on the pilothouse deck with a large upper master stateroom. The greater length also allows for a more spacious fly bridge with hot tub. Lacey Kay was built by her current owner, making frequent trips to the yard during the build process. He opted for the additional fuel tanks, giving her an aggregate capacity of 9,575 gallons. With her increased waterline hull length, her fuel burn was actually slightly reduced from the 86. At her most efficient cruise speed of 9 knots, she burns about 10 gallons per hour per side, plus 5 gallons for the house generator, giving her an approximate 4,000 NM range; well enough for a Pacific crossing. According to Jeff Leishman, PAE's Chief of Design, extending her hull length has allowed Nordhavn to enhance the performance of, and increase stability and comfort in this well-proven hull design. Long days of boat work can really take their toll, so we played hookie one afternoon and headed out to the beach. With special reason though, it was our 12 year wedding anniversary! Watching surfers conquer the waves and enjoying the breezes, it was exactly the break we needed. Our biggest boat project at the moment is building our own hard dogder, a task that has been spanning two months of work. There has been a lot of logistics and tedious work, but the finished product will be a great addition to our outdoor space. Cheers from the work yard! Thank you SO MUCH to our Patrons. What lies between us and saltwater sailing? 1300 miles of rivers! Before we can get underway, we need to unstep our mast. For this leg of our journey south, we turning our sailboat into a motorboat. There’s a fixed 19’ 1” bridge in Chicago that forces sailboats to ditch their sticks. Besides that, rivers don’t offer the best sailing opportunities. ;) Some sailors opt to carry their masts on deck, others, like us, decide to ship it via truck. In this episode, we pull into Skyway Yacht Works at the mouth of the Calumet River to have our mast unstepped and pack it for shipping. Our mast is keel-stepped, so while our boat is only 37', our mast is 52'. Besides the massive inconvenience of having the mast and rigging on deck making it difficult to see and move around, we decided we didn't want to worry about jousting something or someone while maneuvering in tight quarters. We would of had 15' hanging off the bow/stern of our boat, and that just felt unsafe all around. And in the end, all variables considered, it ended up costing us only a handful of boat bucks more to ship it vs. putting it on deck. Even though we’re packing away our sails for now, we’re already thinking about a new headsail for sailing in the trade winds. Our 155% genoa is old, stretched out and much too big for where we’re headed next: the Gulf of Mexico, the Bahamas, and the Caribbean. After Kirk spent hours researching the type of sail we wanted (115% Dacron tri-radial), we contacted over a dozen sail lofts for quotes. We received the best information from Mack Sails and Precision Sails. In the end, we ordered our new headsail from Precision Sails, as they were the most responsive, their quote form the most detailed, and their price the cheapest. Hard to beat. Interested in a new sail? Precision Sails is having a Black Friday Sale: https://www.precisionsailloft.com/lpd Hope you enjoy! Lauren & Kirk P.S. In last week's episode, we went into detail about how we are fabricating the forward sawn floors. From how we are taking measurements using tick sticks and a template to how we are cutting our rolling bevel down the frames without a ship's saw. In this episode we get into more of that work and also show how we fabricate the Bronze Floors for these frames. The floors look very different than our floors for the steamed frames and require a little figuring out for the angles. During that time we also get a lot of help from Dominique who came all the way from Belgium to come help on the project. Finally we roll out a long awaited idea of ours. We have been asked many times if we could provide something on our site for people to buy, that is made out of the wood from the project as well as Victoria's Mahogany pieces that wouldn't be used in the build. We finally got these done and we are happy to say that we have custom handmade pens now available on our site with plenty of time for shipping as Christmas gifts! As always, thank you for watching and helping to support the making of and sharing of these videos!
Go to https://surfshark.com/fairisle for an extra 4 months Surfshark.. We always knew the 600nm passage from Panama to the Cayman Islands would be challenging but we didn't expect to get quite so beaten up! It's been a particularly bad year we are told. Endless rain squalls, bad weather over the States putting a lot of North in the wind making our trip a fearsome beat. And high seas from the continued bad weather across the Caribbean region. So in this episode we enjoy our last few days in Panama and then knuckle down for the trip North. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ PLEASE DO SUBSCRIBE - IT COSTS YOU NOTHING AND HELPS US OUT WITH THE YOUTUBE ALGORITHM ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PATREON: We couldn't make these videos without the support of you, our patrons. She might be the smallest in Oyster's range but there has a been a great deal of fuss made about this boat. She even has her own documentary series! So, to find out what she's really like, we set off on a 200mile, 3 day test to see what she's be like on a typical long weekend cruise. Not only was it great to settle into finding out what made her tick without the pressure of a tight deadline, but we got to cruise some of my favourite areas in the Channel Islands. 00:57 Setting the scene 02:39 Accommodation - First impressions 04:16 Day 1 - Setting off 06:40 Under way - First Impressions 10:28 Alderney gateway to the Channel Islands 13:15 Day 2 - Breeze, the Big Russel and Sark 14:35 On deck in detail 21:07 Engine & tech tour under the floor 24:53 Return leg - Sark to Hamble 27:02 Day 3 - Reflections and conclusions To see behind the scenes for more detail on the engine and services check our deep dive https://youtu.be/ehaY7N_-l5k Official Oyster 495 website https://youtu.be/kHcRlIdq41Q Facebook - @planetsail.org Website - www.planetsail.co.uk Twitter - matthewsheahan Linkedin - www.linkedin.com/in/matthew-sheahan
