Evinrude started losing ground to Mercury and also Yamaha by falling behind in the power race. It also kept its two-stroke engines that required owners to mix oil with gasoline. While sailing Cuba’s Southern coast, we haven’t been able to provision for over a month! Our fridge is almost empty, so we decide to take the difficult route to Cayo Largo (our final destination) to attempt to spearfish a remote reef. On the way we struggle to anchor overnight in a bug infested mangrove cut and experiment with some new anchoring techniques. We cruised our classic wooden sailboat Julia to many spectacular anchorages on Nuku Hiva and Hiva Oa. This is south pacific sailing as we have always dreamed it would be. The spectacular green scenery of the Marquesas has overwhelmed us with soaring cliffs, beautiful beaches, and swaying palm trees. Julia is an Ingrid Ketch, designed by William Atkin and built in 1960. She is a traditionally built wooden boat, fir planking on oak frames. Our dinghy is skin on frame, designed by Dave Gentry. We go through a few of the things I did to prepare for this passage across the Gulf Stream to Florida, but get pulled over by the cops on arrival.
