During approach, this Apache destroyed a whole bunch of trees and landed right beside a crowd of people watching and waiting for the helicopter to show up. Lukily, nobody was injured by the falling trees !! Wanna know what paradise looks like? Man, this place is incredible! Take crystal clear water, sprinkle some pure white sand beaches around then put Delos right in the middle! No people no internet just us and thousands of birds. As we explored more and more of St. Brandon we found ourselves wearing less and less clothes. I like the way Brady described the feeling “it’s so freeing being naked in nature!” Being buzzy with treasure hunting and relaxing under the palm trees we didn’t pay enough attention to the tide and got stranded on the wrong island with a small ocean between us and Delos! Just over eighty nautical miles away. Close enough to contemplate a day-time passage if you have a fast boat. Tanda Malaika set off at first light but unfortunately did not make it in before dark. After the sun set they collided with the reef at the southern tip of Huahine. The Navionics SonarCharts were wrong. The reef, visible in the regular setting of Navionics, disappeared when switched to the Sonar charts. At night the breaking waves are invisible until it is too late. Sadly all of these factors saw Tanda Malaika run into the reef in the dark. Needless to say, we opted to for a safe and slow overnight passage to put us into Huahine in daylight. With just the genoa up, we were on alert. Alert to all the dangers we face out here on this big blue ocean. We've seen it twice now on our travels through the south pacific; Cruisers colliding with reefs in the middle of the night. Under full sail. Under the assumption that charts are accurate. It's awful and heartbreaking. Dreams destroyed in seconds by a violent collision with a reef. Every time the results are complete and total destruction. Rudders ripped off. Sail drives sheared. Keels pushed up through hull. Life trajectories altered permanently. It sends shivers through our spines seeing these wrecks. It could easily have been us. Sometimes it's as simple as not zooming in far enough on a map. Other times it's trusting one map over the other. Our hearts go out to the crew of Tanda Malaika. Dangers aside, Huahine has beautiful crystal clear waters and is well protected all the way around by that "barrier reef". A very nice feature if you are planning an epic dinghy ride. Sailing to Madagascar we get hit by the biggest gale we've ever seen. We're about 240 miles East of the northern cape of Madagascar when the GRIB files start to show a compressed pressure gradient and forecasts of 30-40 knots. We shorten sail and prepare for the rough weather. The forecast is way too low and we end up seeing 50 knots of wind and 7-10M (20-30 ft) waves during the worst part of it, which of course happens at night. The crew gets tossed around like crazy and everyone is forced to stay in their bunks while Capt. Breeyawn and The Braidster take 30 minute shifts hand steering down the waves all night long. It's a really intense experience but Delos is a strong boat and takes very good care of us. This is our story, a story of three souls sailing around the world. It is a story about sailing, but it's also a story about the fantastic people we meet and amazing places we see. It's a story of people living their lives in an alternate way, in close connection with the beautiful people and amazing planet that we call home. A little video put together from our 5 day sail from Crete to Malta. Some bad weather for the first 24 hours, first encounter with water spouts (we ran into 4 in one day..)! Finally caught some Tuna trawling.. after 3 months worth of trawling in the Med.. Arrived in in beautiful Malta, and discovered a few problems: -The bilge was pumping more than usual.. turns out the 'stuffing box' is taking in water. -The auto pilot was also making strange creaking noises.. Riley climbed into the TINY stern cabin (which I believe an octopus would struggle to squeeze into) and the rudder has broken free of its casing.. we believe when we ran aground in Turkey this is what has caused it.. better we have discovered this now rather than half way across the Atlantic.. -Also the wind speed indicator has given up on life.
