And the closer we came to the “exit” of the Gulf of Corinth on the west side, the more we saw the bridge near the city of Patras appear. It is the longest cable-stayed bridge in the world, about 2,880 metres long, connecting the Peloponnese peninsula with mainland Greece. There were quite a few challenges in building the bridge, as the foundation had to be placed in deep water with a loose seabed, and there is seismic activity and tectonic movement in this area because the Gulf of Corinth is slowly expanding. The bridge was opened shortly before the 2004 Athens Olympic Games. The vertical clearance under the bridge deck is approximately 52 metres in the widest central section. In the side sections (less central), the height is considerably lower, around 32 metres, and at the very edges about 15 metres.

A trip taken in vain. We went to Dallas for a special event except while in flight the event was canceled. Landed and immediately rearranged our return flight for the next day. At least we had time to drive by a few of our old dancing clubs in Deep Ellum and enjoy some great jambalaya at the Free Man Cajun Cafe & Lounge. Brought back some great memories. Our first episode, Refitting a Catalina 42 sailboat, dancing and messing around Ep 1, was videoed at a few of those clubs. Steve’s been soaking the bolts on Isabella’s engine riser’s flange for several weeks. He was able to remove them and take off the flange. Next step, remove the protective insulation on the riser to expose the metal portion and have a welder weld the flange onto the riser. We’re making progress on fixing the exhaust leak, yea! More to come on that...but that’s another episode. It had been a while since the Vitrifrigo refrigerator had been defrosted, so that was next on our to do list. The ice had built up quite a bit and it was definitely time to melt that away. Once defrosted, it was time to celebrate aka dance time. Running through the central heart of the Scottish highlands lies a 200 year old canal, designed to provide a short-cut for sailing ships of old from Scotland's west coast to the north sea, avoiding the treacherous Pentland Firth and Cape Wrath. 22 miles of canal and 29 locks were dug to link 3 natural lochs, creating a 60 mile waterway across the country. We're on a voyage through it's charms and scenery, keeping an eye out for the famous Loch Ness Monster and sailing past Britain's tallest mountain, as we take our 11 meter sailboat Florence to 32 meters above sea level and travel 60 miles through the center of Scotland on the Caledonian Canal. For our real time location tracker and extra content, join the crew at www.patreon.com/SailingYachtFlorence We have sailed over 60,000 ocean miles around the world including a complete circumnavigation on our 37ft boat, Florence. After 9 years of experience sailing in the tropics, this series presents a new challenge and a chance to learn new skills as we sail north to the Arctic. Welcome back aboard Moor R & R! Episode 25 We’ve landed in Lombok ✨ Picked up the car and pointed it north, heading straight for the heart of the island. This leg of our journey takes us through Lombok’s remote centre — winding roads, lush rainforest, quiet villages, and landscapes that feel beautifully untouched. Our first stop was Tetebatu, where friendly locals welcomed us with warm smiles and not great English. We explored the Monkey Forest, wandered through emerald rice terraces, and discovered a magical hidden waterfall tucked deep in the jungle. Some of the roads we travelled definitely didn’t feel like they were made for a car… but we trusted Google Maps anyway 😅 With plenty of wrong turns and getting lost more than once, the adventure only got better. Along the way, we stumbled across a stunning blue lake that stopped us in our tracks. After days of rain, we continued on to Benang Stokel and Benang Kelambu waterfalls. The power of the water was incredible — thundering, alive, and absolutely beautiful. Nature at its wildest. With memories full and the road still calling, we set our sights west, ready for the next chapter of our Lombok journey. Come along for the highs and lows of life at sea – the joy of community, the challenge of sailing, and all the fun we get up too !!! If you’d like to support our journey and get behind-the-scenes content, early access, and more, you can join our crew and love to welcome you aboard. Our friend Kris (@big.sierra-i1f) made the journey south to Mexico to join us for the final La Cruz Days party—and what started as a music-filled farewell quickly turned into an impromptu camping adventure in Chacala. From beach sunsets and cold beers to late-night jams and dusty roads, this trip perfectly captured the magic of cruiser culture in Mexico. After La Cruz, Chris and I wrapped up the season in true Baja fashion at the Lusty on Land end-of-season party, celebrating with live bands, sailors, musicians, and the incredible community that forms around places like La Cruz de Huanacaxtle every winter. After a long holiday break back home in Massachusetts, Steve, Robin, and Akiva make the 1,100-mile journey back north to Arabella and winter life in Newfoundland. With big plans for backcountry skiing and ice climbing along the island’s northwest coast, it’s time to finish some critical prep. This episode covers the build of a second custom sled bag using a newly acquired Sailrite sewing machine—a test run before tackling major canvas projects on Arabella. Steve walks through the design, materials, and sewing techniques that will make hauling winter climbing gear into the mountains faster and easier. With new skis and rare Silvretta bindings dialed in, the crew heads out for a recon mission along the Fox River toward the Lewis Hills. But a sudden storm and strong winds nearly derail the season when one ski goes straight overboard and sinks into the harbor. What follows is an unexpected winter recovery mission, a boat launch in January, and a reminder of how quickly things can go sideways in cold conditions. The episode wraps with a first look at the trail system, wildlife tracks in the snow, and early planning for multi-day backcountry trips—setting the stage for winter adventures to come. In this episode: • Driving back to Newfoundland in winter • DIY sled bag/pulk gear sewing • Sailrite machine setup & techniques • Silvretta ski bindings for ice climbing approaches • Losing (and recovering) a ski overboard • Winter harbor recovery mission • Trail recon toward the Lewis Hills • Preparing for multi-day backcountry travel -------------------------- Episode 375 Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve began the journey as an amateur wooden boat builder crafting a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and now sailing the boat—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that traditional wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project continues beyond the boat shop, as Steve and crew travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. -------------------------- If you are interested in supporting/helping here are a few ways: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/how-to-help Acorn to Arabella's wishlist: https://www.acorntoarabella.com/wishlistpriority TotalBoat supports A2A!
