How do you go about finding a sailboat to circumnavigate? Join us as we journey from market research in Sarasota all the way to Key West to follow our first lead on a used sailboat that might be seaworthy enough to take us around the world. I decided to buy a used 2001 Jeanneau Sun Odyssey to use in Gtreece for the summer since the new construction of my catamraran will not be complete until later this fall. Hi everyone! Welcome back to chapter 2 of this Norwegian Sea Saga! In this episode I really had to man up to encounter the 490 NM towards the incredible Norwegian island of Jan Mayen. A lifelong dream is taking shape as I plounge into these cold, arctic 3000 meter deep waters, totally isolated from the rest of the world for 5 days. No boats, no plains, no rescue. Only me and mother nature. Enjoy! Chi siamo? Cosa ci facciamo in mare? D’inverno in città, a Torino. D’estate in barca, nell’Adriatico. Buon vento a tutti voi! A couple of modern-day documentarians, perpetual travelers, and seekers of tall tales. We’ve been chasing our curiosity around the world on wheels and keels since 2011. Why? Because curiosity is the key to unlocking life. It pushes us outside our comfort zone, softens our assumptions, and helps us embrace the great unknown. The more we let our curiosity lead the way, the more we discover about ourselves and the world around us. Our home is also our transportation and we spend weeks away from civilization and sometimes land. Self-reliance and living a sustainable lifestyle are a must. It's all about managing our resources and we’re always looking for new and better ways to do so. We've lived off the grid for over 10 years now in everything from a Van to RV to a Sailboat. After some Crocodile hunting... We boat convoy our way through the skinny Mboli Passage in the Florida islands. With thick jungle on both sides, this place felt straight from Jurassic Park. https://www.sailingnandji.com In this episode of Sailing Nandji, we explore the beautiful Tokyo bay where we were rafted up with two other vessels, Sand Pebble and Fara. Taking La diva the tender through the mangroves in search of Crocodiles, we check out the ship wreck of Kikuzuko, a Japanese destroyer that was sunk in the corner of Tokyo Bay. We then boat convoy North through the Mboli passage in the Florida islands. The skinny passage cuts its way through dense jungle, weaving its way to the north coast. The passage gets as skinny as 50m at times, with small villages and palm tree huts built on the water. It felt straight out of Jurassic Park. We are a young couple with a dog, who with no sailing experience, then bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off sailing around the Pacific! It takes time to talk to strangers, and even more time to have a real connection. Going the extra mile to get to know someone is a commitment. Which is why these are our most treasured experiences. Let's get cleaning! Our bilge is absolutely disgusting - it's clear that the leaking is not a new problem. As we put together more of the story with this boat we learn that this boat was initially damaged several years ago. We still don't know the whole story, but it seems maybe it was repaired and damaged again. By the looks of it, it has been taking on at least a little bit of water ever since that initial damage. Now as we clean we make some startling discoveries about our new boat. Some good...some bad. A few panic attacks later and we've calmed down enough to get back to work. It's been a long road to get here. From buying our Beneteau 49 at auction, road tripping across the country, putting her back in the water after a quick (but thorough) inspection, and then last week getting some of the interior disassembled. We're almost ready to start cutting into her to see how bad things are beneath the glossy surface, but first we clean. Thanks for watching- With love The Evans' **************************************** *Our Boat* 2008 Beneteau 49 3 cabin 2 head 4JH4-TE Westerbeke gen Mast, sails and rigging are in excellent condition and in storage Here's what we *think* we know about her past. Keep in mind we bought her at auction without ever meeting the owner! The owner was sailing along and ran aground - hard. Hard enough that the keel pivoted and pushed the aft end up into the hull. This force cracked the internal grid in several places and broke a portion of the grid free from hull. At some point an inspection was done, insurance was called and decisions were made. Before leaving Placencia and sailing to Northeast Sapodilla Caye Belize we get busy checking out of Belize and get the boat ready for a short day sail. When the planned departure date arrives a large thunderstorm forms over our proposed path and we are forced to make the decision whether we want to take the risk or be conservative. Once underway we decide to motor sail in the calm squally weather and end up having a beautiful trip and a gorgeous afternoon to explore the island. Did you like this video? Will an expired liferaft float? What’s inside a life raft? How do you inflate a life raft? We ended up choosing to get a new one. There are many options to decide from. Some of our decisions were practical. Ben wanted to be able to sit up. We needed a small one as most of the time its just the two of us aboard. Other than that we found one that was from a trustworthy company and pulled the trigger. Ahem not the pull cord. With the new one installed, we had to decide what to do with our old one. Since we weren’t comfortable using it ourselves, we couldn’t in good conscious sell it. We have been lugging around an extra raft for just around 7000 nautical miles. Finally we found the right day and place to give the old one a spin. We have since bought a New Quality Life Raft from Viking: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01GKCRJUA/?linkCode=as2&tag=nahoa-20 We are Very happy with our new purchase as it sits at our stern ready for deployment at a moments notice. Another item we have ready at a moments notice is a Grab Bag. We can recommend this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01JQZF158/?linkCode=as2&tag=nahoa-20 We would not leave harbour without a Grab Bag. Last but not least, we carry PLBs on our lifejackets: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003BQM058/?linkCode=as2&tag=nahoa-20 These three items make up our main safety net. Of course there are other items we carry with us at all times including: 1. A quality waterproof VHF in the Dinghy: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001PUA91Y/?linkCode=as2&tag=nahoa-20 2. Sound Device: Air Horn: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XBZGZB4/?linkCode=as2&tag=nahoa-20 3. In this episode we explore some beautiful deserted soft sand beaches on the west side of Yasawa Island, Fiji, then continue eastward. Our goal is to get to the town of Savusavu on the large island of Vanua Levu. Savusavu is a good spot to reprovisioning, so our intent is to get there to provision prior to making our way down to the remote Lau group. On the way, we decide to divert to the Namena Island marine reserve where fishing is prohibited. As a result of the regulations marine life is much bigger than in other areas of the Pacific where we have done dives. There's so much life here around the coral pinnacles it's astounding, and Kevin was able to swim right down into a school of large Sweetlips....who didn't seem scared at all. After two dives at Namena, we carry on toward Savusavu. In this area there are lots of boobies. The sea bird that is. They seem to enjoy using the motion of the boat mast as a playground to test their skills....approaching the antenna on the top of the mast and touching it with their beaks! They also were curious about one of the fishing lures we were towing, and one of the boobies got its leg hooked up in the fish hook. Happy ending though...we managed to reel it in an remove the hook from the leg without injury to the boobie, which flew away to rejoin its copilots. Thanks for following! I couldn't believe how well it sailed. You could have some serious fun with this, especially in big breeze." -------------------------- ** The Tiwal story ** * The Birth of Tiwal * As a girl, the first time our founder Marion Excoffon was told, “No!” by her father when she asked to use the family boat, her life as an inventor began. It was then she started dreaming of building her own craft, an ambitious feat that would come true years later. On the road to creating an innovative high-speed vessel for everyone from kids and first timers to expert sailors who want to test limits, there were a number of prototypes, failures, challenges and headaches. But, if there’s one thing Marion’s known for, it’s her sailor’s grit! * Combining Fun & Technology * The award winning Tiwal concept is easy assembly and storage - maximum fun and performance for watersports and activities. A Tiwal isn’t your average dinghy! Our design is the result of tons of coordination, talent, and technological savvy. * A Growing Global Community * For our community of Tiwal skippers (more than 2,500 worldwide!) all this innovative design means their focus is fixed on the pleasures of watersports and having tons of fun on a responsive sailing craft. With excellent upwind and downwind abilities combined with high-speeds, Tiwals are a part of both fun and professional performance. The Tiwal 3 received the Boat of the Year (Best innovation) Award 2014 from Sailing World in the USA and the Red Dot Award, with recognitions, accolades, and smiling faces continuing to join together on the waves worldwide. Woop Woop! I can't believe this is video #300!! What a journey it's been, from newbie sailors to crossing the Pacific, Indian, and Atlantic oceans. We've had the pleasure of exploring 6 continents and sailing with almost 60 amazing Delos crew. From party boat to family boat you've stuck with us as we've evolved over the years and it means the world to continue sharing this lifestyle that we love so much! In this episode we sail Delos to Mount Desert Island, Maine and anchor right in the middle of Acadia National Park. Once we figure out how to anchor Maggie with the incredibly high tides we begin exploring by foot and hike the highest trail accessible right next to Delos. Brian decides to tackle some more boat work fixing our washing machine which takes an interesting turn. At the end of the day the washing machine is in pieces, but we now have unlimited hot water from our new heater system so things begin to look up. Just want to give a huge THANKS to all of you who have watched and supported this project over the years! You’re the best and we love every single one of you and you have made this possible for us! Adoro stare in rada in barca a vela per giorni e giorni, mi piace nuotare, andare sulla spiaggia e giocare a Robinson Crusoe; la vita selvaggia mi piace e la Corsica lo è, selvaggia, con chilometri e chilometri di costa incontaminata. Arriva un momento però, che anche una "gitana dei mari" come me, si debba rifornire di acqua, cibo e gasolio; così mi rifugio nel porto più vicino, in questo caso era Saint-Florent, e mi dedico un po' alla terra. In this weeks video, we take you behind the scenes of life on a fully decked-out solar-electric catamaran. We share what worked brilliantly, what we would change, and the surprising performance of this high tech setup. From real-time speed and power tests to honest impressions of noise levels, daily energy consumption, and typical life at anchor—we touch on it all. Whether you're dreaming of an electric boat or just curious how this hybrid cruiser handles life off the grid, this is one is for you. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WE’RE JASON AND NIKKI WYNN. A couple of explorers, modern-day documentarians, and cultivators of curiosity. Things We're Most Curious About... GETTING OFF-GRID Our home is also our transportation and we spend weeks away from civilization and sometimes land. So self-reliance and sustainable living are a must. We've learned heaps about renewable energy, managing waste, creating safe drinking water and foraging for food. Our 469 mile passage across the Sulu Sea has been an unexpected challenge. Because these border line doldrum, never-above-10-knots-of-wind days are putting CURIOSITY to the test. https://www.gonewiththewynns.com/sail-plan ☝Behind the Scenes, Gear Guides & More ⛵Our Catamaran https://www.gonewiththewynns.com/curiosity-sailboat 📷 Photo & Video Gear 📷 https://www.gonewiththewynns.com/photo-video-gear 📱Socials INSTAGRAM: https://instagram.com/the_wynns/ FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/GoneWithTheWynns ⚓JOIN THE CREW http://bit.ly/gwtw-social 🎶 MUSIC for vids. 2 Months Free: https://bit.ly/artlist-GWTW 🎨 Creative Assets for Vids (SFX, Templates & Presets): - https://bit.ly/motion-array-GWTW 🎽GET YOUR SWAG ON: https://gonewiththewynns.teemill.com/ -------------------------------------------------- We wanted a boat that would sail on the days we never could before (light wind). And surprisingly, we've been able to keep a decent pace on days we didn't think we would be able to sail at all (only 5-8 knots of wind). Which has made this whole passage with compromised engines, a lot less stressful. We haven't talked much about performance, our sails or general setup yet. Mostly because we've been waiting until we had used everything (more than once). And we have been using every single sail we have. Sometimes, all in one day. So, if you're ready for a deep dive into CURIOSITY'S sail plan, how it compares to our old boat and what we feel we're missing…this one is for you. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WE’RE JASON AND NIKKI WYNN. A couple of explorers, modern-day documentarians, and cultivators of curiosity. We carefully manage our resources and we’re always looking for new and better ways to do so. TALKING TO STRANGERS People are busy (even on remote islands) and travelers are a dime a dozen. We take little break from the grind (literally) to talk through the damage thus far and our feelings about it. This one is a little more talk and little less action but hope you all enjoy! We are LOVING making these videos and hope you all are enjoying watching them as well. It's a fun process and we love putting as much of our personality into them as we can. This boat is our dream, we've worked towards it for so long and now that we get to work on it - it's awesome. Thanks for being here and being part of the journey! Thanks for watching- With love The Evans' **************************************** *Our Boat* 2008 Beneteau 49 3 cabin 2 head 4JH4-TE Westerbeke generator Mast, sails and rig are in excellent condition and in storage Here's what we *think* we know about her past. See https://youtu.be/JJ3MruoO2q4 for how we came to own her! **************************************** *Our Gear* Main Camera: https://amzn.to/3h9CiOg Main Lens: https://amzn.to/2Q3hYC7 Microphone: https://amzn.to/3iSDGoV Action Camera: https://amzn.to/4ibLwJV Drone: https://amzn.to/2Yf3X8S Laptop: https://amzn.to/3h9ydcL *Find Us Elsewhere* Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ExpeditionEvans J Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/Jadexploring/ B Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/_BrettEvans_ EE Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ExpeditionEvans *Website/blog* https://www.expeditionevans.com "Want to support us?" https://www.patreon.com/expeditionevans #sailboat #sailboatrestoration #sailboatrefit #sailing #beneteauamerica
The WIDER 150' super yacht was no more than a set of drawings and a vision just over a year ago when I interviewed Tilli Antonelli. Now the first unit has been sold, and a second unit is being built in a state of the art shipyard in Ancona, Italy. This mini documentary introduces you to the founder of WIDER, the beautiful area of Italy where the 150' is being built, and shows unique footage of the work being carried out and the finished product. YOU'VE NEVER HEARD OF THIS CATAMARAN - But It's Our Newest Contender - The Max Cruise 42 -MJ Sailing
There's a brand new catamaran design being launched, and we've just added to our list of contenders. The Max 42 by Max Cruise Marine. http://maxcruisemarine.com/ Get more up to date information and behind the scenes action by becoming a Patron! http://patreon.com/mjsailing Our goal is to spend the next two years building the perfect catamaran for ourselves. Originally we had narrowed it down to the Oram 45R; the Grainger Raku 44; and the Schionning Arrow 1360. But along the way we began talking to another company which is coming out with a brand new catamaran design. Unlike the other choices, which are foam core flat panel kits, the Max 42 is comprised of 3 dimensional modules. The exterior will arrive to us with a gel coat finish, which means we wouldn't need to spend nearly 10 months of our time sanding and faring ourselves, preparing it for paint. We think there are a lot of great options with the Max 42, and it easily made its way into our list of contenders of build we be starting this year. Just make sure to stay tuned in the next few weeks when it goes in a head to head battle with the Schionning Arrow 1360, and we pick a winner! Thanks for watching! Thank you SO MUCH to our Patrons. These amazing supporters help keep us on the boat, our camera equipment up to date, and the videos coming. Without our patrons, these videos would not be possible. Here is the link to Part 1 if you want to start from the beginning! https://youtu.be/DgcYmH9s7Lg This week we enter the dreaded doldrums, where it is just one squall after another for days on end. But we get serious about what it would mean to have to abandon ship, so we get mentally and physically prepared for worst case scenario... SV Parlay is a hurricane damaged Lagoon 450 catamaran, which Colin rebuilt with friends and has started sailing around the world. We found bulkhead damage on their catamaran in Panama, so have fixed her up, and are now sailing across the Pacific Ocean!!
