A lot of questions were answered today for Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli out on a choppy Bay of Angels in Cagliari whipped up by winds gusting up to 20 knots. In those conditions, the new AC75 didn’t just perform, it excelled and showed a small glimpse of its enormous potential. Twitchy, fast and highly responsive, when set on its new starboard foil, the boat looked like a rocket-ship and more than a handful for the helm and trim teams. The story of the day, and one that has really set tongues wagging in Barcelona is the sheer performance of INEOS Britannia who, for the first time, let it rip downwind on a huge 10 mile run and at a truly astonishing pace. The commissioning of RB3 is going well and today was the moment to show its potential with Sir Ben Ainslie and Dylan Fletcher-Scott starting to sail the boat supremely smoothly and with growing confidence in the platform. Ben has been rightly cautious and methodical in the approach to commissioning, writing at length in the British media about the process and the team’s approach. Today it paid handsome dividends. For Alinghi Red Bull Racing this was a stunning day on the water as the ultimately committed Swiss extend their on-water training time and, of all the challengers, are impressively taking huge steps forward as they dial in to the curiosities and demands of the new AC75. When the afternoon breeze came in, they looked formidable with co-ordination building between the helms and Flight Controllers and seemingly able to throw the boat aggressively into manoeuvres. Over in Cagliari, it was day two of running the new, and rather interesting, starboard wing with the Italians opting for a lot of straight-line sailing to check through its profile and the key control systems. Very much a commissioning day, the Flight Controllers were exploring every angle of the cant setting, riding high at times upwind on a lower angle cant before hunkering down and end-plating as they pushed it wider. For INEOS Britannia it was the second day of commissioning the muscular and highly technical ‘RB3’ so understandably the byword was ‘caution’ for the day with flight only taken upwind as the team get used to everything onboard. The boat popped quickly in the waters off Badalona to the north of Barcelona and from there the team started to quite easily execute foiling tacks on the bigger span foils. We’ve had an awesome winter doing inland adventures as well as banging out a bunch of boat projects. But now it’s time for us to once again hit the high seas and over the course of the next couple of weeks we’ll be exploring one of the Mediterranean's most impressive cruising grounds. South West Turkey is renown for combining beautiful scenery and ancient ruins. And the convoluted shape of its coastline makes for one pristine anchorage after another. But it also poses some unique challenges. The bays are extremely deep which makes anchoring a serious challenge. The mountainous terrain can create extremely unpredictable weather. But this week our main issue is that after taking a 4 month break from sailing, we are super rusty and honestly so is the boat. So we’ve got to get back into the groove if we’re going to be able to take on the challenge of sailing SW Turkey. I attended the Jeanneau media week in Cannes and had this brief opportunity to run the new DB37 with Yamaha outboards. These media days are designed for traditional media where 5 - 10 journalists all jump on the boat for 1 hr and get about 10 minutes each to test the boat, so while I was fourtunate enough to get the boat to myself it's in no way what I would consider a test. In short, Alinghi Red Bull Racing looked bang on point today in Barcelona on a three-hour training run. The afternoon breeze, despite being persistently shifty, stayed in the region of 10-12 knots, allowing the sailors to dial in their pre-sets, concentrate on the flight, and start to open up the throttles on what looked like an incredibly potent AC75 platform with a ton of soon-to-be and being realised potential. Big day for INEOS Britannia as the sailing team took over the programme after countless hours of detailed, relentless design and technical fit-out, led by Sir Ben Ainslie with a midday dock-out and a superb, if shifting, breeze in the range of 8-13 knots. Perfect for the first shake-down of a boat that looks supremely designed with every inch considered to the nth degree. If you have owned an outboard powered day boat or sterndrive sports cruiser and you still want some speed but now require enough living space for day trips with between 8 - 12 people and overnights for up to 6 people then this Schaefer 450 is worthy of your attention. What stuck with me the most after around 8 hours driving her in both calm and quite windy conditions was the very neat construction of the hull. I like this hull for people who want to run up an inland waterway at speed with lots of wind and boat chop and also for those of you that desire a bit of coastal hopping of say 50 - 100NM at a time. For this purpose I see the Schaefer 450 providing you with a comfortable platform to travel on and a super nice floating home for when you arrive at your destination. After fourteen quite magnificently efficient days of commissioning, Taihoro begins her journey up to Barcelona to defend the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup, leaving perhaps, to the casual spectator, more questions than answers with certainly a whole heap of performance improvements yet to be realised. This has been a valuable block of training for the Kiwis who know they have an immense platform to now work-up into a world-beating machine – and the Kiwis know it will be anything but easy. A glassy sea in the harbour heralded a very long day of wind whispering for Emirates Team New Zealand who completed their thirteenth day of training out in Auckland on their brand new AC75 ‘Taihoro.’ Forget the master-blasting of recent sessions, this was a lower range day of sail testing with multiple jib changes up and down the scale as well as testing the M1 and M2-1 mainsail skins with a drone in the sky and plenty of movement onboard as the trimmers jumped out of their pods for better viewpoints of the shapes they are trying to achieve. Hull 1 of the Cure 55 catamaran series has reached a major milestone in the construction process. With the cabin top component fundamentally complete and fitted into place, the skilled and talented Cure production team have spent the week finalising the attachment to the hull platform. Overnight in Barcelona, it wasn’t looking good for a productive day on Tuesday, but with the wind-driven front passing over quicker than expected, the remnants were more than acceptable despite overcast conditions and a grey demeanour all over the immediate waterfront. Alinghi Red Bull Racing, keen to keep the training pressure on, docked-out before midday and made the absolute best of a diminishing breeze and a leftover sharp chop. With forecast conditions showing a shut-down in the wind later on Saturday, Emirates Team New Zealand called for an early, 8.30am, dock-out to catch the best of the day on Saturday and complete their eleventh day of training. Pushing the sail trim programme hard, it was a day for the tweakers to play around with particularly the double-skin mainsail with emphasis seemingly on the area around the tack. Upgrade your mornings with better coffee. Head to https://aeropress.com/atticus and save 20% off your order! Thanks to AeroPress for sponsoring today’s video! [ KRAKEN YACHTS ] Make sure you check out Kraken's YouTube channel: @KrakenYachts And their website: https://krakenyachts.com/ Sailing around the world is risky and no matter how hard you try, you’re never going to completely eliminate that risk. But what if you could buy a boat that eliminated as much risk as humanly possible, without compromising comfort. Well then you’d be buying a very expensive boat Designing and building a Bluewater boat is always a compromise between three things; Seaworthiness, comfort, and affordability. For most of human history, Seaworthiness was by far the most important factor when choosing a boat for long distance voyaging. But today the vast majority of new “bluewater” boats are designed from the ground up, to be sold at boat shows. Seaworthiness is something that is not very marketable because green sailors find it hard to recognize at a glance. So boats that value seaworthiness struggle to compete when their interiors are smaller and their price tags are bigger, than all the other boats at the show. But there is one up and coming boat builder that refuses to even go to boat shows for one simple reason. This week we had the chance to tour the Kraken yard here in Turkey as well as to do a full review of their flagship model, the Kraken 50. So what exactly do you get when you spend over a million dollars on a bluewater boat? And, the question that’s been in our minds ever since we did this tour, is it time for us to upgrade?
