The show is predominantly targeted at the super yacht charter market so there were few sailing boats on display but it was a well organised event with plenty to see and do. The exhibitor's marquee offered the kinds of goods and services one would expect from such an event, including a chandlery, upholstery stands, representatives from the paint industry as well as aspirational resorts and spas. I bumped into Mae, who recently came sailing on Esper, who has been considering a career change from her teaching profession. She was recommended approaching the Galileo Maritime Academy where she chatted to Sana about crewing on super yachts. IGY Marinas is starting a re-fit of an existing orphanage on the island of St Maarten, SXM, in the Caribbean. They are calling on anyone in the area who would be willing to assist on Saturday, February 20th, 2016 from the hours of 10am to 3pm.. lunch will be provided. IGY is providing all materials for the re-fit. Anyone able to assist with labor in carpentry, electrical, plumbing, painting, general maintenance etc would be greatly appreciated if they would join in for a day to help the kids who's home is in need of some TLC, and show them we care. City Sailing Sail Man Overboard Board using your engine This is a demonstration on Man/Woman/Dog/Hat Overboard by using the method of a controlled tack and not touching anything and then using the engine to glide in sideways towards the object in the water. People will say it is easy in these conditions, it is a demonstration to show the method. We do not cover how to get the person back in the vessel, this will be covered later. This method is different for different vessels, we had a go in a F40 which was difficult to stop as the jib sails well when backed! After spending 5 days in the Belize jungle we took a water taxi to Caye Caulker. That island is about 5 miles long with around 1,000 people. The roads are sand and there are no cars. Best of all there are no chain restaurants or hotels. Very low key.

A stand out boat in so many ways, the Contest 52MC is Contest Yacht’s first ever motor boat and a spectacularly successful design. The press can’t get enough of her, loving her looks and her handling which they say astounds, her innovative, half-planing hull riding as though on rails, tracking straight and staying flat right through the tightest of turns. With power options from twin 350hp to 550hp diesels she’s equally comfortable at 8 or 28 knots, and soft rides through the nastiest chop. And she’s a dry boat, her pronounced spray rails cascading the breaking water away. The joint creation of longstanding design partner Georg Nissen, the well know motor boat engineering and designer company Vripack and the yard’s own in-house design team, the 52MC is also an unusually versatile performance platform, available in sedan, open sport and a flybridge version. Interior layouts are customisable, too, building out of a raised saloon and two heads, three sleeping cabin standard plan.

The introduction of the new BMW 7 serie took place at our shipyard. In a beautiful setting between the yachts, people enjoyed a delicious lunch or dinner in combination with a tour in the yard.

Caribbean cheer Great racing, great Contest… that’s how the 35th Heineken St Maarten Regatta played out in early March with Contest 42CS Beluga scooping an impressive second in class in this world ranking Caribbean racing series. By anyone’s measure a striking result proving the true performance prowess of this really versatile, comfortable and capable fast cruising yacht. Raced annually, the Heineken Regatta draws a big, keen crowd, this year not far short of 200 entries and 2000 sailors with a heady mix from Volvo 60 to Melges 24, and mostly sailing to the Caribbean Sailing Association (CSA) handicap. Beluga sailed in CSA5 in the three day, five race event sailed in pretty boisterous wind and swell, and a good test of a well found boat. “It was so nice to see how everything worked so well,” says Contest Yachts CEO Arjen Conijn who sailed among Beluga’s afterguard, “and she just looked so good!”
