Killyleagh Yacht Club hosted Race 3 of the 2017 Sail for Cancer on May 20th 2017. The day stared out with sunshine before the clouds rolled in, forcing the fleet to battled wind, rain, hailstones, thunder and lighting before the day was over. The variable winds made for a somewhat frustrating day on the water, as always this was soon forgotten with a beer in the bar and a great sail back to WhiteRock which reminded us how lucky we are. 190 km Rhein liegen hinter uns!

Небольшой обзор обратного перехода с Карибского региона на Азорские острова. Расстояние по прямой 2200 миль. Однако погодные условия в мае не позволяют идти напрямик. Встречное течение, большие штилевые зоны и постоянный встречный ветер при приближении к Азорам. Поэтому многие предпочитают подниматься чуть выше Бермудских островов на остатках пассата и дальше идти по краю Северо-Американского циклона вдоль 40-й широты. Подходя к Азорам с севера. При таком маршруте общий путь увеличивается примерно до 2400-2600 миль. Зато его можно пройти под парусом, без мотора. Хотя, если посмотреть на результаты ARC Europe за последние годы, то видно, что в среднем участники тратят 70 моточасов или примерно 300 литров топлива на путь от Бермуд до Азор (1800 миль). Собственно и у меня был такой же план. Мы довольно комфортно поднялись острым бейдевиндом от Сен Мартена до Бермуд (800 миль), выйдя на их широту в пятистах милях к востоку. И должны были уйти еще севернее, миль на триста. Однако как раз в этот момент у Ньюфаундленда начал формироваться новый огромный циклон и активно подсасывать в себя воздух со всех сторон. После чего он должен был быстро двигаться в сторону Азор, оставляя за собой штиль и волну. Что было неприемлемо. Поэтому я решил прекратить движение на север и попытаться оседлать циклон. Что успешно и получилось. Неделю мы шли на 15-ти узловом ветру от подсасываемого циклоном воздуха. Со средней скоростью в районе 8 узлов. Очень комфортно, с поставленным Code 0, без волны. А потом циклон догнал нас и начался ад. Волна очень быстро поднялась метров до шести, ветер на порывах за 40 узлов. Есть большая разница между сорока узлами от локального ветра в Средиземке и глобального в океане. На эту шестиметровую волну сверху накладывается еще ветровая, превращая ее в обрушивающуюся ревущую гору с сумасшедшей энергией внутри. Спрятаться или отвернуть некуда - циклон накрывает всю Северную Атлантику, до тропиков. Глаз циклона находился где то в ста милях от нас. Глядя в глаза экипажа я понимал, что если бы была возможность телепортироваться с лодки, то я остался бы один. Несмотря на заранее сделанное предупреждение, что переход через север Атлантики, это далеко не круиз. Велико было искушение скинуть грот и штормовать на кусочке стакселя. Но тогда мы опять попадали в штилевую зону за штормом. Поэтому шли на втором рифе грота и первом рифе генуи. Средняя скорость в первые сутки шторма получилась 10,4 узла. Для круизного катамарана, это запредельная средняя суточная скорость. Можно идти так час, можно два, даже четыре можно. Но не сутки! Это примерно как на машине - вроде едешь 120, а средняя выходит 42. На вторые сутки 10,1. При максимальной 22,5 узла. Но все получилось отлично. Мы успели пролететь на шторме 540 миль. И за 180 миль до Азор попали таки в штиль. :) Ну что мешало ветру продержаться еще хотя бы часиков двенадцать? Эх… Дальше пришлось включать дизель-шкот. Ветер 2-3 узла и по прогнозу на неделю. И как раз в этот момент практически одновременно не выдержали фалы и грота и спинакера. Волна еще оставалась большой, а ветра не было. Качнуло и чпок - нет больше парусов. :) В итоге мы прошли 2480 миль от Сен Мартена за 14 суток. Средняя скорость получилась 7,5 узлов. В ресторане на Азорах экипаж торжественно поклялся на бутылке Белуга Трансатлантика, что больше никогда не полезет в океан, а значит хорошо прогулялись! Особая благодарность Дмитрию Ляшко, добровольно взявшему на себя обязанности кока и закормившему нас так, что ремни на финише не застегивались. А так же Роману Бодрякову за поддержку на берегу, отличный погодный сервис! Спиртного в этот раз осталось на год вперед. Это был абсолютно трезвый переход.:) В видео нет шторма, ни у кого не возникало желания поснимать. :)

Crossing the Bahama bank was absolutely magical. The water was so clear and still its was like watching the seafloor through a window. We took some amazing drone shots of the boat and we did a nice paddle workout using the boat as a pacer.
