As many of you can tell, things have changed A LOT for us over the years... To keep it short and sweet, we're splitting time between southern Oregon and northern California, living the woods life and spending quite a bit of time on a cattle ranch! Life is good and we hope that all of you that have followed our adventures are well and chasing your dreams. Speaking of dreams, Kristina has taken it upon herself to become an AMAZING cook! I ate well growing up with a father that was a 5 star chef in San Diego and a mother that learned how to cook from her grandmother (she grew up in the Great Depression) who cooked everything from scratch. That said, Kristina has become an amazing cook and can prepare top level meals easily, many of which have blown away the best meals of my childhood and beyond. This video was her application video for the 13th season of MasterChef, her favorite show. Things were moving along well with her application until the person interviewing her changed positions suddenly. We feel Kristina got lost in the shuffle. Regardless, she is entering the mix again for season 14 and she is submitting a new application video! We cannot share the application video now, possibly never depending on the rules of confidentiality, but we feel this one is ready to see the light of day. We hope all of you are as well as we are! We miss sailing very much but sometimes you have to take a break from the things you love to finish raising children, especially in a blended family where kid exchanges can become really complicated when you have to sail to them! ? Our best to all of you and cheers to your future adventures, wherever they may take you! ?
It was requested so here it is! My candle FAIL from the end of our Episode 41. The Story: Basically, I told Kristina I was going to light the candle and she started telling me that it took batteries. I didn't believe her since it looked like a regular candle and so I began trying to light the wick. 20 matches later, she decided to point out how right she was.
Kristina and I Uber it to Redwood City to meet up with Christina (confusing, I know) and then drive down to San Pedro where we begin prepping her Catalina 30, Atta Girl, to move her up the coast. We begin to find many issues that the surveyor missed and start working on Atta Girl in an attempt to make her more seaworthy. Youtube didn't allow me to link to Click Boom Sail with an end screen video so here's a link to their first episode! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4pbl1WmygA0 Some of you have asked what a typical day is like for the crew of Rad Mode. Here's events that occurred during 48 hours and it's pretty typical of our days in a sense that most of it was completely not planned for. Living on a sailboat produces some interesting challenges to ones schedule and aside from homeschooling Annabelle and Darius in the morning when they are with us, our days are filled with surprising events. You never know when a friend might call in a favor to get some help on their boat or when you'll suddenly be invited along on a sail. Aside from school and the very necessary trips to get groceries, we never really know what is going to happen. While sitting on Rad Mode, broke down and stuck in Richardson Bay, a neighbor we'd never spoken to suddenly asks if we want to go sailing on SV Lightwave, formerly SV Buttercup of 1990 BOC Documentary fame, and what do we say? Hells yeah of course! After that, we continue working to get Rad Mode up and running again and enjoy the 4th of July fireworks, just the two of us. We have a fun sail aboard SV Plan B back to Sausalito from the Berkeley Yacht Club and then have to find a creative way to get the crew of Rad Mode back on the boat due to high winds and Rad Mode swinging around on her anchor. After that, a friend invites us to check out the Spaulding Boatyard, an old school boatyard that specializes in wooden boat building and repair. Kristina and I have a very bad day when numerous things go wrong on Rad Mode, stranding us in Richardson Bay while we wait for replacement parts. We won't let that stop us from having a good time so we raft up with our friends Dennis and June and have the crew of SV Plan B over for a party before sailing to Berkeley Marina. We untie Rad Mode from the bush we spent the night against in the Delta and sail down river to for some provisioning, a cheat day, pizza, beer, and donut holes. Kristina, the Super Deal Hound, scores us some cheap provisions in Oakland and we stock up, sailor style. We start where we left off in Episode 34 and sail through shallow Sherman Lake. A lake in the Sacramento Delta just north of Antioch that is known for its numerous hazards. After that, we go tie up against a bush for the night (yes, a bush) and make omelettes. The omelettes might not sound like much to you, but it's been so long since we've had one that we can't remember the last time. J & K reunite after J's Oregon trip, we sail to Oakland to deliver the kids to their uncle Kurt, Skipper of the Plan B, and then we take a beater of a trip up river to Rio Vista. There, once again, we are reminded that sailboats are nothing but trouble sometimes (even though we love them) and we finally make it into Antioch City Marina to hang and sail with a friend we met out on the water. We spend a day recovering from the events of Episode 31 and then tie up some loose ends on Rad Mode before enjoying a San Francisco day sail on SV Caradon with Captain Heather! Just a side note about the voice-overs...I stayed up drinking by myself until about 2am and thought about redoing them all so I'd sound less trashed, but what the hell? I certainly don't normally do it this way, but this is how it went down this time so I decided to leave it. Hope you enjoy! We get invited to be rail meat aboard the SV Seastar for a Friday night beer can race at Berkeley Yacht Club and then sail to San Francisco the next morning for J's 40th Birthday Party, China Town Karaoke awesomeness! We Chase the Story and sail to Berkeley Yacht Club (spotting a whale in the process) where we clean up for an event with Tasha Hacker from SV Cheeky Monkey at the OCSC Sailing School. A good time was had by all when we stayed late and partied it up after the event and we met some great people in the process. We then attempt a provisioning run in Berkeley and narrowly avoid what could have been a serious mugging or worse. Finally! We have a run of good weather, meet up with Captain Leasure for vegan burgers on his most epic Westsail 32 Tortuga, watch a new tall ship (Matthew Turner) get "splashed", introduce you to more of the kids, and you get to see where J gets it when his mommy makes her Youtube debut. After returning from the Farallones, we enjoy feelings of success from a good trip, but also feel failure from our inability to sail Rad Mode further. We address some boat work issues and swap out our brand new failing alternator for the old one before finally seeing some long awaited signs of spring on our hike up the hidden staircase in Sausalito.
