Follow along and learn how to repair common types of damage to the gel coat layer on the hull of your dinghy. Gel coat is a thin protective layer that is applied on top of the fiberglass core of the hull. You can think of it this way: if the hull is the chocolate inside of an M&M, gel coat is the candy-colored shell. Keeping the gel coat layer intact is very important to the long-term health of any sailboat. If water is allowed to creep into the fiberglass core, it can soften the material and rapidly reduce the structural integrity of the boat. We, of course, understand that all sorts of things can happen to a dinghy throughout a typical day of sailing. Dropping the transom onto the pavement is pretty much guaranteed to happen. It’s OK! It just means that learning how to repair gel coat can prove to be an essential skill and key to maximizing the lifespan of your boat. We had a week up our sleeves before we had to fly back to Australia to work, so Magnus did a bit of sleuthing and found another dollar a day deal on a hire car. So, after a wonderful experience traversing America on the Route 66 Mother Road, we leave Los Angeles and head to London for a transfer to our flight to Rome. After trains, planes and automobiles, we pick up our Wicked Van and begin the journey north to Trento, up in the mountains. This episode is a trip down memory lane. We stop off at old haunts and finally end up in Baselga di Piné in Trento. A great start to a quick blast through Europe. We have Gone with the Wind hauled out at Glades Boat Storage. She gets a fresh coat of topside paint and ablative bottom paint. Shawn repairs some blisters and a poor patch job on the keel. We also install swim platform brackets. Living on Gone with the Wind at the boatyard is tougher than at the marina, but we aren't there long. We get lucky and are able to borrow stairs to get Voodoo on/off the boat. We are Shawn, Jessie, Mojo and Voodoo. We started our Youtube channel, Big Easy Sailing, to document our journey on our 1972 Gulfstar 36 sailboat. We go out again fishing for the monstrous Bluefin Tuna. And it's a fight. We're joined by dolphins, in fact we join them. They're hunting too and picking away at a school of sardines like finger food at a cocktail party. And then we get a glimpse of of the giant fish just before they let it go back into the deep blue.
