This summer we hauled the boat for a few months while waiting for baby. During that time we did a number of projects that could only be done out of the water. And a big one was the bottom job. We wanted to move the antifouling line up 1.5 inches, sand away the worst of the old bottom paint, and put a new color antifouling on. That was what we planned to do. Ideal Racing Conditions Highlight First Day of Helly Hansen NOOD Regatta in St. Petersburg

Take it from Gary Schwarting, a guy who’s been in the class for a long time; there’s a reason why the Melges 24 is one of the greatest sportboats of all time.

After two days of racing on Tampa Bay, light weather persisted Sunday to close the 2018 Helly Hansen National Offshore One Design Regatta in St. Petersburg with a day ashore. Team Monsoon, led by skipper Bruce Ayres, of Newport Beach, Calif., was named Overall Winner as the top team from the Melges 24 fleet, deemed the weekend’s most competitive class.

Sailing World’s Boat of the Year judges nailed it back in 1997 when they pegged Brian Bennett’s Viper 640 as the Boat of the Year. At a time when symmetric was about to become old school, the judges knew the 21-foot sportboat would be around for a good long while. It was solid in every measurement: “Fun and challenging to sail, a good value and appealing to a wide range of sailors.”

What’s the newest A class catamaran have for the foiling set? A Class fanatic Bailey White gives us a tour as the 40-boat fleet assembles at the Helly Hansen NOOD Regatta in St. Petersburg.

One of the staple classes over 30 years of NOOD Regattas is the Hobie 33s. They don’t show up in big numbers, but you can’t miss them on the racecourse.

The newest one-design to the St. Petersburg NOOD Regatta has some tight racing and camaraderie, but the difference in the results come down to what’s in the mix.

Stable and less physically demanding to sail than other sportboats of its time, the J/80, and the class, continues to deliver to owners and Corinthian teams that appreciate good racing, straight-forward tuning, and easy ownership. With nearly 1,600 of them sailing worldwide, major championships still draw healthy fleets and top-level teams, and in harbors like Annapolis, J/80 class racing is alive and well since being officially established in 1995.

As one of the top J/111 teams in the country, Team Kashmir starts its road to the North American Championship with a big win at the Chicago NOOD.

It only takes a pause before Rod Jabin pulls a favorite memory from more than a decade of racing Farr 30s: It’s the 2015 Farr 30 World Championship in Seattle, far from his hometown of Annapolis, Maryland, when a big weather front sweeps across the racecourse just as Jabin’s Ramrod is rounding the weather mark.

The DragonForce 65 fleet came out enforce to compete on Saturday night at the Helly Hansen NOOD Regatta Chicago. As one of the fastest growing fleets in area, they also earn their place as the smallest one-design class ever hosted by the NOOD.

The 2018 Helly Hansen National Offshore One Design (NOOD) Regatta — the country’s largest and longest-running sailboat racing series — concluded its second stop of 2018 in San Diego on Sunday. Hundreds of sailors in more than 10 classes enjoyed a weekend of excellent sailing conditions and robust competition in the waters off of Point Loma and Coronado. For Viper 640 Nice Asp skipper Mike Pentecost, being selected the regatta’s overall winner was a bonus to the winning streak he and his teammates have been enjoying over the past few months.

In the NOOD Regatta's big lead up event for the J/70 World Championship, local sailor Jud Smith and his teammates set the benchmark for consistency in a supremely challenging fleet.
