We’ve anxiously been waiting to leave the marina in Fort Lauderdale that we’ve called home for the past two months and the time has finally come! After the boat work and minor set backs, we head south to Dinner Key in Biscayne Bay (the further south, the better for our crossing to The Bahamas). We encountered a lot of firsts on the short trip - first time maneuvering summer friday out of our narrow marina, first visit to a fuel dock, first dolphin sighting and first seasick cat 🙁. The ICW narrows considerably, boating traffic increases drastically, and the number of bascule bridge grows exponentially on the worst stretch of inland waterway this side of Madagascar. We make it quite apparent that we do not think highly of this particular section of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. In our humble opinions, the stretch of waterway between West Palm and Miami is just plain sucky - still, it is part of the journey that must be endured if you choose the inland route South. The amount of opulence and wealth in this area is truly staggering. Also staggering, is the shear lack of common courtesy on the water. I still haven't been able to figure out if (SOME OF) the power boaters in this area are just completely lacking of elementary seamanship, or if they are just wholly selfish and care not for how their actions effect others. If you're not being verbally accosted over the VHF by a rude Operator of an opening bridge, then your probably getting smashed around by the enormous wakes of inconsiderate power-boaters. If you're not painstakingly maneuvering around boats that have anchored in the middle of the channel, then you're probably busy maneuvering around crab pots... which have also been inconveniently set dead in the middle of the channel. I can tell you one thing though - there's never a dull moment in the South Florida stretch of the ICW! Thanks for watching!! We leave Saoirse behind for the day to head over to Fowl Cay on with friends, Dan and Kika, on their boat, Uma. We have similar boats, both Pearsons. one year apart and one foot apart. So we thought it would be interesting to do a day sail with them to see how they have Uma set up. We are always looking for ideas on how to upgrade Saoirse and make her as sailing friendly as possible. We explore the reef around Fowl Cay and have fun practicing our free diving. While learning to sail the "new" catamaran we make a big (rookie) mistake at 13 knots boat speed. We all know what happened on our last passage... and if you don't you can check out vlog #69: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-5dSK4NIS_w It's safe to say that this passage was the exact opposite of our last. It was extremely calm, we were well prepared, and it went very smoothly. We are bound and determined to not make the same mistakes twice, so this time around we made sure we waited for the perfect weather window, did our research about all potential stops and anchorages along the way, and didn't go into an unknown inlet at night. We stood off until the morning to make the final approach to Marathon. Also, in this video we put up the first phase of our lifeline project. It's not fully complete but they're at least functional for now.
