Living with the weather is a massive portion of what cruising is all about. In the cooler months the cold fronts roll through on a weekly basis, then as the weather warms up the squalls keep you on your toes. What this means is that if you choose to sail in the Bahamas during the warmer months, you will inevitably get caught by squalls, so you have to learn how to sail through them. The thing about squalls is that they are very difficult to predict. You can be sailing around in clear weather during the morning, but then in the afternoon you find yourself dodging and weaving amongst a large groups of thunderheads. This occurrence is especially common during the summer months when scattered squalls emerge on a near-daily basis. As a sailor, all you can do is learn to live with the squalls. Try to avoid being near them as best you can, learn to sail in a light breeze when they steal your wind and also be ready to reef down quickly and early when the wind doubles or triples out of the blue. The nice part about squalls is that they seldom effect you for more than 10 minutes at a time, so you really just have to hang in there long enough for it to blow through, then you'll be sailing along again on your merry way like nothing ever happened. In this video, we sail from Grand Cay to West End. During this particular day the wind was incredibly variable. We start off with a favorable 8-10 knots, then it dies completely, then 25 knots, then 0, then 30, then 5, then 2... the finally the wind settled in at a steady 5 knots but it was dead on our nose. We always prefer to sail to our destinations, but this day was a good example of one where you just have to GET THERE, and that often means firing up the old iron genny - which we did. We arrive at West End 10 hours after departing from Grand Cay. It was a long day, but it was nothing compared to drama that will occur the following day when we attempt to cross the Gulf Stream. Guess how many people can we fitin our small sailboat? This is the most people who have ever slept and eaten aboard. Right after finishing work we met up with Cory's family. We got wet on the Lady of the Mist under the Horseshoe Falls and explored the Bird Kingdom in Niagara Falls which is the World's Largest free-flying indoor aviary. You could get so close to all the tropical birds. We even went sailing on Lake Erie with them and our good friends from Newfoundland Will and Katie. What a fun filled week. Sailing from Port Vila on Efate island to Luganville on Espiritu Santo island. The 2 big jobs we needed to do, fix the Code Zero sail and repair the anchor windlass gearbox completed, its time to sail north. We do some food provisioning and sail 150 nautical miles north through some rain squalls and thunder.
Karl and his sailor girls are off the hook in Cabo San Lorenzo (Ecuador) and headded to Bahía Caraquez. We have a georgous sail and launch our trawler to take another Microplastic sample. And what great news: we find 0 plastic in our sample. Quite interesting, since we had found 13 pieces during a trawl just a couple of miles closer to the shore on our way south. When we get to Bahía Caraquez, we depart on a little sunday funday dinghi adventure and Maria surprises me with a whole keg of HEFEWEIZEN. Of course, my German beer-loving heart is jumping with joy :). But jump on board and see for yourself! Brady definitely earns some Captain points in this episode! The furler on the Genoa gives out in the dead of the night, right in the middle of a rainy squall which is gusting up to 46 knots!! The squall damages our wind sensor and we have to sail old school through the night by looking at the flags. After getting everything back in working order, we get a little weather lesson from Sean and the crew explores what they miss most while at sea! It can be hard to capture intense sailing moments on Delos at times when it’s all hands on deck, but it was awesome to have Ruben aboard to help capture this experience in detail. I'm a Canadian photographer from Ottawa who got rid of everything to travel the world. I make vlogs sharing my ups and downs, and my adventures in vans, on motorbikes, and on sailboats. - Who is Champ? Champ is my handsome 14-year-old Labrador, who travelled almost everywhere with me for his whole life. He loves chin scratches, fetching sticks, and scarfing down cheeseburgers and pizza. - What camera equipment do you use? I use a Panasonic FZ2500, a DJI Mavic Pro, a Rode video micro with Deadcat, a Zihyun Crane 3 Axis Gimbal, as well as DIY tripods and lights. - What are your vehicles? I drove a 1992 Dodge Ram B350 camper van all over North America for about two years. Travelling by motorcycle made for some unique trips. I explored the Canadian Maritimes (and deserts and backroads all over the continent) on a 2002 Kawasaki KL250 Super Sherpa dual sport bike, and also rode my 1999 Yamaha V-Star XVS1100 cruiser with a Champion Escort sidecar across my home country twice. From land to water travels: I currently live and work on a 1979 Wharram Oro 47 catamaran. - What are your plans with the boat? I will fix it up, run it on nothing but green electric power, and sail off into the sunset. Stay tuned for the growing build and the adventures to come! - How do you find all these cool places we see in the videos? To gain access to my complete research and the world traveller’s map I curate during my explorations off the beaten path, you need to hit me up on Patreon. Here are a few websites I frequent: https://freecampsites.net/, https://www.campendium.com/, http://www.atlasobscura.com/, https://www.couchsurfing.com/ - How do you afford your lifestyle? I live and travel economical by using free camping and mooring, cooking my own meals, thoroughly researching products and how-to’s online, practicing a DIY approach, and being as efficient as possible with my resources. I've struggled financially for most of my life, and although I'm blessed with helpful friends and family as well as being able-bodied, white and male, I don't subscribe to the belief that you need someone footing your bills in order to pursue your passion. So, I learned that you DO need to sacrifice comfort, consistency, safety, and a traditional career but that it IS possible, worth it, and the only lifestyle that makes me happy. I make my income almost entirely by creating content for YouTube, but it's a tight budget. Ad revenue, business sponsors, affiliate links, Patreon, Paypal donations, and merchandise sales bring in about as much as a part-time job, and I'm able to make that work. When it isn't enough, I go back to regular work such as photography, videography or construction, but that takes the focus away from my own projects. - How does your dog fit into this lifestyle? It's really not as difficult as people seem to think. I spend most of the day with Champ anyways, since we enjoy similar things, like eating food and being outdoors. I let the constraint of bringing my dog with me help me make decisions about where I go and what I do, so I avoid places that ban dogs, and therefore spend more time in nature instead of in cities. - How do you make it work as a digital nomad? My electrical power set-up allows charging my camera and laptop to film and edit almost daily. For Internet access quick and reliable enough to upload my episodes a few at a time, I use coffee shops and libraries. I also use a data package on my phone (10GB), a WiFi antenna, and a WiFi booster.
We made our own 1/4 inch square copper rivets to hang Arabella's planks and we are now to the point where we actually get to use them! This is such an exciting time for us as we have planned and worked so hard to make these. We finally get to see the fruits of our labor in their final place. We initially were looking at buying rivets for the task but couldn't find anything that was a quite the right size (according to information from Dave Gerr's The Elements of Boat Strength). We searched all over the place, even overseas but could find anything to our satisfaction, not to mention it was going to come with a steep price tag. So, we decided to make our own out of copper bar stock and with a 32 ton press with a die. It worked perfectly and now we have the beefy rivets we were looking for! It took a little bit of practice to get them just right and figure out what the heads needed to look like and we are still improving, but overall, they look great and we are very happy with the final product. We also finally got the rest of the prop shaft assembly installed. The Delrin liner got two flats cut into it for grip and was pressed into the bored stern post. Everything fit like a charm. Now, we can focus on getting more planks on Arabella and figuring out our trip to Costa Rica to help SAILCARGO in February or 2020. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Now we have a home again! Thanks to some wonderful followers we got to borrow a boat to live on here in Sweden. Johan sails it from Varberg to our home port in Malmö. We are a Swedish couple who wanted a different kind of life. So we moved aboard our sailboat Ran, a custom built Beason 40 in aluminium and untied the lines in the middle of the Swedish winter in January 2016. There is no set route and we will go where the wind and our minds take us. We did a horse carriage ride in Charleston, explored downtown a little bit, and did a ghost tour at the old jail in Charleston where they put pirates at one time. It was pretty creepy and sounded like a horrible place to be back then. The average time to live if you went there was 3 months! They had no electricity, water, or plumbing. Also no insulation or windows to keep wind out! We ended the night with desert at Kaminsky’s. Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V770 with a Rode External mic. My old camera is now my number 2 is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. I help out some Gunas with some fuel and they reward me with some fruit, 2 bread fruit a bunch of bananas and some lemons. I have never had bread fruit so I am eager to try it and so are my friends the bees. We test out the Rocna in weed and it is surprising, it fails first go so I talk a bit about that and I also look at how much fish is wasted when we fillet them and throw away the carcass. Winds gusting up to 40 knots and a heinous seastate out on the Bay of Palma, kept the 44Cup fleet at the dock on the opening day of the 44Cup Palma. The wind began veering and dropping mid-afternoon but the left-over sea state precluded the deciding round of the 2019 44Cup from getting underway. “We had a steady 23-25 knots of wind, but the sea states was such, coming from various directions, that it was basically like a cauldron,” reported PRO Peter Reggio. “That combined with the velocity being at the upper end means it wouldn’t have been good racing at all. Fortunately the forecast for the next few days is looking better than it did this morning."

This exciting new product was designed and manufactured by North Sails partner Future Fibres, who took their vast experience and technical expertise in torsion cable and furler integration to the next level on this shared R&D project. Designed to work exclusively with North Helix sails, this innovative product brings top-down furling back to self-supporting Code sails. The Future Fibres Helix Luff Cord is a very light, thin, and pliable engineering solution that brings the benefits of top-down furling to Load Sharing sails. The cords are built to the precise tensile stiffness which allows for optimal Load Sharing between the cable and the sail. As the sail trim changes the cord to sail load ratio remains the same. The onboard benefit is a safe and reliable top-down furl while reaping the benefits of a free-flying, forward projecting Helix sail.

More about this project contact: Yacht Marine Brokerage Eliad Hagilady eliad@yacht-marine-brokerage.com +905439538678 visit the yacht page for additional info: http://yacht-marine-brokerage.com/project/expedition-motor-yacht-38-m-composite-epoxy-hull/ The yacht was designed by Piet van Oossanen and Naval Architect Rene van der Velden who is a very known name for designing Moonen yachts in Holland. The hull was built in 2010 by Per Gynt Yachts but unfortunately the yacht construction has never been completed because the shipyard went out of business. Later, the remains of Per Gynt Yachts were sold to another shipyard. The 38 m hull was part of the deal. Since construction the hull was kept under shed, protected from the sun. The main dimensions of the hull are LOA 37.5 m / Beam 8.3 m / Draft 2.10 m and displacement 250 tons. We have available plans suggesting different layouts to complete the construction including options for 4, 5 or 6 cabins expedition motor yacht. Originally the yacht was planned to have 50,000 liter of fuel and two Caterpillar engines with 600 hp each, which were expected to give her an extensive range and make her ready for any long passage around the globe. One of the plans is also suggesting to fit a touch and go Helipad. The present shipyard that owns the 38 m hull is highly motivated to sell. The hull is offered for very attractive price tag that represents approx. 25% of its real value and can cut serious cost and time for anyone who is planning to build a large explorer. The main business of the present owner of this 38 m hull is construction of high spec military vessels made from epoxy composite, they can be the perfect partner to complete the technical part of the project according to client requirements. For the interior part, there are few luxury yacht interior companies at the same area were the 38 m hull is located. They can be combined in the project to complete the interior according to a client design.
