We fix the drainage problem of our cockpit floor once and for all. We have wet feet with puddles right on the cockpit floor of our sailboat! , Water just sits in the front of the cockpit and it doesn’t drain. We demonstrate how to build a laminated foam core panel, like Coosa board, or a stress skin panel, to bring a new pitch or slant to the cockpit floor of our old sailboat, so that we will have no more wet socks. Now the cockpit sole will drain, and we will not have a cockpit drainage problem. Brick House...whether it be fresh or salt water, has always been a wet cockpit, with puddled water in the front of the cockpit floor with no way to run down to the cockpit drain in the back of the cockpit flooring. This boat repair will repair that problem by changing the pitch of the cockpit floor, and help with better cockpit floor drainage. Now with a newly fiberglassed foam core slanted panel fiberglassed to the floor, the cockpit can drain the water properly and we won’t have wet feet anymore, nor will the ship’s cat come “Nauti Coati” come in with a wet or dirty belly! Join us on Sailboat Brick House as we make modifications to the floor of the cockpit to direct water to the cockpit drains. Now the cockpit Sole will be high and dry. Now we can wear our socks in the cockpit without them getting all wet in the cockpit! Checking off another Norway bucket list item, we head up the Geiranger Fjord. This week we bring you YET ANOTHER episode that I have been looking forward to for a long, long time. As we make our way south along the coast of Norway, we pop into the Geiranger Fjord, which we rushed past on our way north.  Listed as an UNESCO World Heritage Site, it did not take long to see what all the hype was about. Before we could even make it to the end of the fjord and the cute little town waiting for us, we must have seen hundreds of waterfalls along the way.  If you were to make ONE trip to Norway, we'd recommend this as your stop.   Stay tuned to see why. Much love, Jessica, Matt & Georgie

We recently bought a new boat, a new model Outremer that is announced at Boot Düsseldorf January 2020. After 1 year on a L39 and almost 3 years on the L52S we now want to make a next step to a performance cat. The new boat will be delivered in 2021 so we're selling the current Greatcircle somewhere this year while sailing in from Saint Lucia to Boston. Time and place of delivery is open for discussion. Greatcircle is one of a handful 3-cabin version of the Lagoon 52 Sportop model worldwide and is fully equipped with A/C, genset, tenderlift, water maker, Code 0, Wingaker, double freezer/fridge, dish washer and everything you need to be sailing really well in great comfort. The history of the boat is of course very transparent, you can watch the weekly episodes over the last 3 years. Serious reactions are welcome via Messenger on our Facebook page Cat Greatcircle

While each of the five supermaxis that are now set to start in the 75th Sydney Hobart yacht race has undergone varying hull or foil modifications in the last year, the one consistent area of refinement for all five has been in their sail inventories. Of course, much depends on whether your supermaxi is ‘fat’ or ‘skinny’ as to what works best for you, but there’s evidently still plenty of room for debate and differing approaches between the sailmakers. Cable-less sails are a very current topic of discussion and while most supermaxis are moving to shallower flying sails as apparent wind angles downwind get ever narrower, others are returning to deeper running spinnakers. What most of the experts do agree upon, however is the value of extending sail crossovers, especially downwind; the longer you can hold onto one sail and it still be effective, the less time you spend changing sails and – in theory at least – the fewer sails you have to carry to Hobart. But it’s a tricky balance. In this series of interviews (after they’d had a bite of the 75th Hobart cake at the Christmas Eve race briefing) Mark Richards (skipper Wild Oats XI), Chris Nicholson (tactician aboard InfoTrack), Jim Cooney (owner of Comanche) and Mark Bradford (skipper of Black Jack) provide insights into how they are managing sails on their respective boats and their perspectives on how sail design is evolving. Oh, and we would have interviewed David Witt (skipper of Scallywag) too, but he proved so popular with the press after a trademark comment in the media conference, that we missed a slot!

Visit North Sails Online: https://www.northsails.com/sailing/en Follow North Sails on Instagram @north_sails For 75 years, the Rolex Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race has been a Boxing Day highlight for the sailing world. The race attracts a wide range of boats and sailors, from 30-footers sailed by family and friends to the 100’ Super Maxis with professional race crews. While the big boats tend to attract the most attention, we’ll also be cheering on Katwinchar, the oldest boat ever to compete in the race.  Launched in 1904 at the Watney Brewery in England, the boat was a total wreck when Bill Barry-Cotter, a well-known Sydney boatbuilder, found her. Bill’s brother Kendall, who will skipper the yacht to Hobart, said the restoration took two years and over 10,000 man-hours to complete. “The intention was always to go to Hobart,” he adds. To help this historic boat be competitive against more modern boats, Peter Antill from North Sails Sydney worked with Kendall and Sailing Master Michael Spies to design an inventory that would suit this classic. “The configuration is quite a bit different,” Kendall says. “You couldn't just use modern technology, it had to be a mixture to suit this particular boat.” The goal was “to try to get the best product we could for the boat at the time,” he continues. “So that was a combination of Peter and myself, going through and designing the sail plan and the types of sails that we wanted to use.”

Wild Oats XI, under the leadership of skipper Mark Richards, is an undeniable success story. The program has collected Sydney to Hobart line honors on nine separate occasions and was the first boat to claim the “Treble:” race record, line honors, and overall winner. First launched in 2005, this 100’ SuperMaxi will sail the 2019 Sydney to Hobart Race 1300 kilos lighter than a year ago. And North Sails is proud to be their sailmaker of choice. “The sail evolution over those 15 years has been phenomenal,” Richards says. “We're a lot faster than we have been in the past with the reaching tight luff sails, so that's all pretty exciting stuff. We've got a brand new mainsail, which is 40 kilos lighter than last year's.” Richards credits the strong relationship with North Sails as a key factor in helping the team get to where they are today. “I'm really excited about this year's race, because I think we've got the best sail inventory that we've ever had in the history of the boat.”

Super Maxi BlackJack skipper Mark Bradford spent the days leading up to the 2019 Sydney to Hobart running through a pre-race work list, which included putting the boat’s new North 3Di sails through their paces before heading offshore. The team allowed us to tag along for a training day, and naturally, we had to ask them questions about their sails. Here are the highlights of what we learned from a team that is always pushing boundaries. 3Di Carries Across the Range: BlackJack’s mantra is to be fast in light air, and the new lightweight 3Di sails have improved the boat’s performance under 8 knots. BlackJack has recently added Helix, further increasing the versatility of its inventory. Durability Matters: 3Di improves both strength and durability. “The miles and hours that we can put on the sails these days are just far superior to what we have seen in the past and what competing sailmakers can offer,” Bradford says. “North Sails engineering and manufacturing processes are second to none, and our confidence is extremely high that the failure rate will be next to nothing.” Learn More on https://www.northsails.com/sailing/en/ About 3Di: https://www.northsails.com/sailing/en/sails/materials About North Helix: https://www.northsails.com/sailing/en/helix-headsails

Who scared Rick? Is Buoy hearing voices? Lou gets grumpy with Rick! What happens to most of us when our kids have families, careers & children of their own? It can feel lonely, left out & down right depressing just going through our daily routines & catching any spare time the kids would have for us. Well, we decided to do something about that, we set off on a journey around Australia in our RV until karma had other plans. Our lives took a different direction after this, which allowed us to grab a lifetime dream that we didn’t think was ever possible but in reality, it was. Please join two boomers as we embark on our new chapter & how we manage life & family from our MacIntosh 47’ sailboat heading home to Australia.

Can you smell that? Freshly baked baguette's firing out of Latitude's oven like a gatling gun! Yep, Mari turned into a little bread monster - so to stop our freezer being packed to the hilt with bread, I learned how to cook baguette's and damn they are good. We also scored some picture perfect days surfing an outer reef, caught some tasty fish, and had a beautiful sail to an anchorage you have to see to believe.... enjoy!

Orea is a very well maintained example of her class, designed by German Frers as an evolution to earlier models they have kept with the Hallberg-Rassy's proven building technique of solid bottom layup and cored topsides and decks for strength and longevity. This particular example has been lovingly maintained by her current owners and you can see the care they have taken to maintain Orea, each winter they have placed a full cover over to maintain the teak decks which look to be in very good order the interior woodwork is in excellent good condition and must be seen to be fully appreciated. This Hallberg-Rassy 43 Mk1 would suit anyone looking for a comfortable bluewater cruiser with all the mod cons a modern cruiser could desire, Such as electric winches an electric in-mast sail comfortable wide decks and the centre cockpit that is particularly popular with experienced bluewater sailors. The current owners will be sad to see her go but with health issues, they have decided that they can no longer use Orea to her full capabilities and it is time for a new owner to take Orea on and enjoy her sea handling abilities.
