The next day , after a muddy hike back to the boat, we do a brisk downwind sail to Opua to start getting ready for our big sail out of New Zealand . The weather does not look good for this passage so we get busy taking a trip on an old vintage railway and set off to find the biggest Kauri trees in New Zealand . To those who have pondered this stuff and want to explore some more - Welcome! - this is a side quest to the sailing. As there’s not been much sailing, I’ve had little to say recently but we’re coming back into maintenance season now and my thoughts today turned to jobs like lifting the boat out, removing the mast and rudder, all of which require cranes, lifts and rigging systems involving a lot of advanced techniques and technology to make happen- and always spits me to think once again of how our ancestors did what they did. HOW. I don’t really mind how, or how old, or who or whether it was done by slave armies over decades or unknown techniques in years - the HOW must be something we living today can work out if we just examine the problem carefully . So I suggest employing the best modern practical problem solving minds to examine what would have been the minimum required tooling to create the results we see today in ancient monuments all round the world. I don’t want to prove how advanced anyone was; I want to find the minimum, realistic, long term working methods that could lead to the results we still marvel at today. Because with my knowledge of moving heavy loads and rope technology and techniques there are massive holes in the existing literature. Ertesi gün hava aniden yön değiştirdi. Aniden derken gerçekten, kelimenin tam anlamı ile aniden diyorum. Baktık enteresan olaylar oluyor Code Zero'yu komple söküp kaldırdık. Enteresan bir durum var demeye kalmadan akşam hava sertledi. Daha 40 derece enlemine gelmeden hava 40'a dayandı. Gecenin bombası da yakamozlar içinde torpil gibi tekneyle beraber yüzen yunuslardı. Burada tespit edilmiş ve soykırıma uğramış bir yerli halkın izlerine rastlanmamış. Güneydeki Atlantik adalarından ve Karayipler’den ayrılan önemli bir özellik bu. Bu izler insanı üzüyor çünkü. Faial Adası genel olarak batıdan doğuya Kuzey Atlantik’i geçen denizciler için ilk ada. Bizim için ikinci. Genelde Flores Adasını atlıyor insanlar. Kesinlikle uğranması gereken bir ada Flores. Kızımız Zeynep’in Kanaryalardan 1 yıl sonra buraya gelmesi de bizim için burayı özel kıldı. Spela Teknesi Louis ve Rex’le de farklı limanlarda yakın zamanlarda başladığımız kuzey Atlantik geçişi sonrası burada buluştuk. Tanca’da tanışmıştık taa 2 yıl önce. Ne güzel yoldaşlık yaptık. Flores Adasında (bu arada Floreş diye okuyor Portekizliler.) Avare’nin üzerine aborda olan ‪@theboatboys_uk‬ teknesi ile de tekrar Horta’da karşılaştık. Onlar dört genç. 20 li yaşlarının başındalar. Aldıkları tekneyi tamir edip yola çıkmışlar. Sezonu Karayipler’de geçirip dönüyorlar. Flores de sohbetimiz sırasında kızımızın geleceğinden bahsetmiştik. Yaptığı işten falan da. “Çok gurur duyuyorsunuzdur herhalde” demişlerdi. Pamir’de “Evet öyle. Ama sizinle de gurur duyuyorum. 4 genç bunu bu yaşta yapmayı hayal etmişsiniz ve gerçekleştiriyorsunuz. Harikasınız” deyince onlar da çok mutlu oldular. Anyone who ever sailed with me will know that dreaded moment that comes at about 2 AM when you are at the helm, when Chris turns to you and says ‘let’s talk about PYRAMIDS’ and then you know you’re gonna get a two hour coffee- fuelled rant, about the unlikely mechanics of accepted theories on the movement of heavy loads, architectural planning, project logistics, man management, precision levels in stone processing and the advanced engineering principles of Ancient Egypt and comparable cultures. This is that rant in YT form and therefore, to me at least - connected to my sailing, but f it’s not for you I totally get it. To those who have pondered this stuff and want to explore some more - Welcome! - this is a side quest to the sailing. As there’s not been much sailing, I’ve had little to say recently but we’re coming back into maintenance season now and my thoughts today turned to jobs like lifting the boat out, removing the mast and rudder, all of which require cranes, lifts and rigging systems involving a lot of advanced techniques and technology to make happen- and always spits me to think once again of how our ancestors did what they did. HOW. I don’t really mind how, or how old, or who or whether it was done by slave armies over decades or unknown techniques in years - the HOW must be something we living today can work out if we just examine the problem carefully . So I suggest employing the best modern practical problem solving minds to examine what would have been the minimum required tooling to create the results we see today in ancient monuments all round the world. I don’t want to prove how advanced anyone was; I want to find the minimum, realistic, long term working methods that could lead to the results we still marvel at today. Because with my knowledge of moving heavy loads and rope technology and techniques there are massive holes in the existing literature. As you know my boat was affected by hurricane Milton but luckily she stayed afloat and didn’t drag anchor. I wasn’t prepared for the flooding but I should have anticipated it. So after getting all of the water out of the boat it was time to put in the solar panals. I was lucky enough to have a friend who knew about these setups & he came down to give me a hand.. (Thank you Nick I appreciate you brother). Though the solar panel and wind turbine kit didn’t come with everything I got enough power to have lights and the fan as well to charge my phone….. after all that was said and done I cleaned up a bit and got ready for bed. I slept fine but had to to listen to the sail flipping away all night but all in all I slept well.. Boats are always slowly sinking and require constant upkeep. We're seeking a freshwater leak, no a fan of losing drinking water. We're dismantling the boat to find every leak. I'm so glad we solved it; nothing is more unnerving than the water pump turning on when you're not using water. This video covers the regular maintenance we do on our sailboat, including toilet repair, which is a constant headache. We have to replace both flush water valves on our Dometic vacuum toilets. However, that wasn't the only leak causing us issues; the major leak was surprisingly simple yet odd. The bilges on a boat should never be neglected; check them at least a few times a week. At the marina, we wash down the bilge with a hose, clean the shower sumps, and remove barnacles from the sensors, which took most of the day, but as always, my babe had a great meal ready. We've received our new solar panels. Krannich delivered the Aptos 440-watt bifacial panels and helped me get them onto the sailboat. Installation, including a new solar arch, is scheduled for next week, hopefully. Left their information below. They are a global solar provider. After all that, Danielle was ready to get off the boat. We made our first stop at smash burgers, a treat after months of cooking ourselves. The grocery store was next to restock fresh veggies.
