One critical factor that can significantly reduce the strength of a tether is lateral loading on the tether hook. This can happen when the hook becomes entangled with deck fittings, equipment, or other obstructions. When subjected to lateral forces, the hook can deform or even fail, leading to a catastrophic loss of the tether's integrity and potentially putting the wearer at risk of serious injury or death. The Importance of Proper Anchoring To prevent the strength of a safety harness tether from becoming compromised due to lateral loading, the method used to anchor the end of the tether to the vessel must be carefully considered. The primary objective is to ensure that the tether hook cannot become entangled with any deck fittings or other equipment. * Avoid Obstructions: * Clear the Path: Route the tether and hook away from any potential obstructions, such as cleats, winches, or other equipment that could cause entanglement. * Use Protective Covers: If obstructions cannot be avoided, consider using protective covers or sleeves to minimize the risk of the hook snagging. * Regular Inspection and Maintenance: * Inspect the Tether and Hook: Regularly check the tether for signs of wear, damage, or deterioration. Pay close attention to the hook for any signs of deformation or bending. * Replace Damaged Equipment: If any damage is found, replace the affected component immediately. Do not attempt to repair damaged equipment. * Proper Tether Attachment: * Secure the Hook: Ensure that the hook is securely clipped to the anchor point, with no slack in the tether. * Avoid Twisting: Prevent twisting of the tether, as this can weaken the fibers and reduce the overall strength. Additional Safety Tips: * Training and Education: All personnel who use safety harnesses should receive proper training on their correct use, inspection, and maintenance. * Emergency Procedures: Develop and implement emergency procedures for rescuing individuals who may become incapacitated while using a safety harness. * Regular Safety Audits: Conduct regular safety audits to identify potential hazards and ensure compliance with safety regulations. Bir sonraki durağımız Estancia Harberton'da demiri bıraktıktan sonra keyifle yengeç partisi yaptık. Estancia Harberton beyaz adamın ateş topraklarındaki ilk yerleşimi ve 5. kuşak tarafından işletilen 20 hektarlık bir çiftlik. Ancak bu çiftlik arazisinde yürümemize izin vermemeleri biraz kafamızı bozdu ve ertesi gün hemen yandaki Bahia Relegada'ya geçtik. Koydan koya zıplarken kendimizi Centolla ya da King Crab denilen meşhur yengeçlerin satıldığı restoranlarla dolu Almanza Koyu'nda bulduk. This week, Arabella journeys to Mattapoisett, where she was first launched about a year and a half ago. The first leg requires sailing from Boothbay to Gloucester. The crew experiences heavy winds, sea sickness, and sightings of humpback whales—nothing Captain Steve can’t handle! After a quick trip in Gloucester, Steve and Robin motor straight to the mouth of the Cape Cod Canal and hang tight in Sandwich just long enough to get a few projects done. Since the to-do list is coming to an end, Steve can finally go through the spare fasteners and condense the collection, reducing weight and opening up more space for other things. And the addition of lights to the dodger will be nice to make the boat more visible when anchored somewhere without many other boats around. Steve continues the journey forward to Mattapoisett. What started as quick inspection ended up with our forestay foil going overboard! In this maintenance blog I remove the detach the forestay at the turnbuckle in order to remove the furling mechanism. In the next few videos I will be stripping down and completely rebuilding the electric furler gearbox and having the motor brought back to life from almost certain death! Hello everyone. Some of our Garcia and Allures boat friends are doing maintenance on their centreboards, which made me think, ‘I’ve got some old footage of that.’ Here’s a video showing a quick job done on Snow Gum’s centreboard back in January 2021. I had raised the centreboard too high (in the dark; didn’t see the stop mark on the lifting line) and one of the anti-friction pads squeezed too tightly against the centreboard box. It was quite stubborn so Garcia decided to investigate. The pads were shaved a touch. Problem solved. Regards, Rick.

We install LED lighting on our brand new Highfield dinghy. We permanently wire port and starboard lights on the bow as well as a white stern light on our outboard. Los Estados'a vardığımızda gelgit saatini kaçırdığımız için Puerto Parry'de Arjantin donanmasına ait bir şamandraya bağlanmıştık. Sağ olsunlar bizi çok güzel ağırladılar. Etrafımızı sarmalayan tepeler ve manzara ile büyülendik. 5 günlük seyahatini tamamlayan Bestevaer ile Parry'de buluştuk ve bir kaç gün havanın sakinleşmesini bekledikten sonra Hoppner'e geçmek için yola çıktık. Hoppner geçişinde heyecan dorukta: tekneyle geçtiğimiz en dar geçit. Bizim için çok derinlik sıkıntısı yok ama Bestevaer'in bir de derinlik derdi vardı. Bu arada Lazarina'da bir gün önce koya gelmiş bizi bekliyordu. Yani Mar del Plata'dan sonra ilk kez yine 3 tekne bir aradaydık. Hoppner tam bir cennet ve maalesef biz sadece 24 saat geçirebildik. It is time for a massive Sailboat Upgrade for our Catamaran Thalia, replacing our Old and Rusty Anchor and Chain with something that will help us sleep much better at night!
