In this vlog we finally get the new headliner in the salon area of our sailboat. We used a tongue and groove style vinyl beadboard found at Home Depot. It's completely waterproof and should never rot. The trim is also vinyl. We also added 1/2" XPS foam insulation, (also found at Home Depot) to help cut down on the heat of the tropical sun's rays. We're finally starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel. The Enhydra is an innovative, 600-passenger, hybrid-electric aluminum monohull, built by All American Marine for and Red and White Fleet in San Francisco. Designed by Nic de Waal of Teknicraft Design in Auckland, New Zealand, the 128 ft x 30 ft aluminum, monohull vessel is currently the largest lithium-ion battery, hybrid-electric powered vessel in North America built under USCG Subchapter K certification. The 600-passenger vessel is specifically designed for harbor tours of San Francisco Bay and the Golden Gate Bridge. All American Marine partnered with BAE Systems to design and integrate the complete electric hybrid system. BAE supplied their HybriDrive propulsion system that includes a generator, propulsion power converter, house load power supply and control system. The generator is mounted to a variable speed Cummins QSL9 410 hp diesel engine. The system offers parallel hybrid powering of the AC traction motor from the generator, the batteries or both. The motor is coupled to the propulsion shaft via a reduction gear for thrust and increased propeller efficiency. AAM said that with this configuration, torque is immediately available for the propeller, and the speed can be precisely controlled. BAE Systems’ HybriGen system has lower engine operating hours and is more streamlined than a conventional drive, requiring fewer parts, thus resulting in savings in both fuel consumption and maintenance costs. Simultaneously, the propulsion system provides a silent, emissions-free experience for recreational cruise excursions. The BAE HybridDrive system can automatically use full electric battery operation at slower speeds and when maneuvering in and out of the harbor with the Enhydra’s two Veem Star four-blade props. At higher speeds, the generator will automatically engage and augment the additional power demands of the traction motor. We are almost ready to set sail and are waiting for our boat registration from Australia. While we wait we enjoy a day on the water with our friends and this makes us even more excited to get sailing. We also pull our boat Kawai out of the water for some maintenance. Many boat jobs are completed and she is almost ready to sail to Greece. Trace and I go on a road trip to Antalya to pick up boat supplies, before racing home to party at the Marina. We enjoy the Turkish markets and watch the country celebrate the Republic day of Turkey. My electrical power set-up allows charging my camera and laptop to film and edit almost daily. For Internet access quick and reliable enough to upload my episodes a few at a time, I use coffee shops and libraries. I also use a data package on my phone (10GB), a WiFi antenna, and a WiFi booster.

"I'd rather not do that again." Laying up fiberglass upside-down is definitely a tricky, messy process. The stringers we laid up in this episode will serve as a mounting point for the new headliner. We have been having fun being busy making our 2004 Bayliner Bowrider seaworthy. We have a floor with ski locker cut in, the trailer fits in the garage, and tunes from our kicken marine stereo. Now we are going to sit back and relax as we take in what we have done to our boat, and look and the list of what is left. From when we got the boat there has been a 100% improvement in just the little we have done. It's a lot of work to restore a boat, but we have learned. My electrical power set-up allows charging my camera and laptop to film and edit almost daily. For Internet access quick and reliable enough to upload my episodes a few at a time, I use coffee shops and libraries. I also use a data package on my phone (10GB), a WiFi antenna, and a WiFi booster.

Hardstand Boat Life is Hard It's A Hard Life On The Hardstand. Hardstand Time! We haul DT out of the water at Norsand Boatyard in Whangarei and begin a week of boat jobs. Some tasks are annual maintenance and some are in preparation for our upcoming passage to Tonga. Our antifoul will survive another few months, but that doesn't mean we get to relax! Engine service, prop and sail drive antifoul, some new stainless steel bits and pieces, anchor chain maintenance and lots of new supplies and toys delivered. A busy, but very productive week. Once back in the water we head off to the Town Basin Marina in Whangarei to restock the provisions and get ready to welcome the Hegs onboard. It's really not as difficult as people seem to think. I spend most of the day with Champ anyways, since we enjoy similar things, like eating food and being outdoors. I let the constraint of bringing my dog with me help me make decisions about where I go and what I do, so I avoid places that ban dogs, and therefore spend more time in nature instead of in cities. - How do you make it work as a digital nomad? My electrical power set-up allows charging my camera and laptop to film and edit almost daily. For Internet access quick and reliable enough to upload my episodes a few at a time, I use coffee shops and libraries. I also use a data package on my phone (10GB), a WiFi antenna, and a WiFi booster.

We heat primarily with wood, so that is a priority and then we also need to make sure that everything is properly taken care of (covered, stowed, raked, etc...). So when we got back to Starry Horizons after six weeks of traveling around Australia, what did we have waiting for us? You guessed it... MORE work! Our big projects had been completed before we left, but we still needed to get our life raft serviced, give our sail drives some TLC, fix our rope cutters, service our outboard and get a bottom job done. In spite of my best efforts to line up all the work quickly, the weather didn't cooperate so we had to stay in the yard for longer than anticipated. That meant a few extra projects got done, but also that Amy was off presenting at the Women Who Sail conference when the boat got launched. Here we talk about how to change the Clutch Master and Slave Cylinder and what to look for to know when it fails on your jeep. This jeep is a 1994 YJ Wrangler, but most of them around this year with a Hydraulic Clutch work pretty much the same. We sourced the parts from Amazon, the build quality as shown in the video looks better than the equipment we took off, yet at 1/3 the cost from Autozone.
