Leveling Up Sailing Skills for a Performance Catamaran (EP 5)

We are leveling up on our sailing skills and essential training for a circumnavigation on an Outremer 52 Performance Catamaran! We spent the last year waiting for our new sailboat to be built by spending three different weeks at Outremer Week learning the nuances for how to sail performance catamarans and getting critical training for a world circumnavigation. ⛵️ 🎓 0:00 Sporty Experience 1:20 Back to France 2:40 Meeting AWEN 4:00 Sailing Outremer 52 5:28 18 Knots Boat Speed 8:02 Outremer Week 11:38 Regatta Time 12:56 What We Miss 14:40 AWEN in the Water Our learning plan included: 🌟 More Navigation: We did a refresh on navigation and learned new topics like celestial navigation and using advanced navigation software for systems like Octopus from Adrena Software. 🌟 Seamanship & Maneuvers: We got better at sail trim, reefing, tacking, and jibing with precision, ensuring a smooth and efficient passage through changing conditions and, of course, docking and maneuvers in tight quarters. 🌟 Safety & Rescue: We learned crucial safety protocols and how to use the life raft and how to operate the safety equipment for long-haul voyages, including man-overboard drills, emergency procedures, and communication systems. 🌟 Offshore Maintenance: We learned how to diagnose problems on a sailboat and how to fix problems quickly in a challenging environment where you need to be self-sufficient. 🌟 Offshore Medical: We learned how to do major triage, diagnosis and how to approach a medical emergency while reducing risk to the crew. 🌟 Weather: We dove deeper into understanding weather patterns and forecasts, so we can make informed decisions and navigate through various weather conditions. 🌟 Diesel Engines: We learned a lot more about diesel engines, how to look for problems, regular maintenance and how they work. 🌟 Rigging & Rope Work: We learned a lot more about rigging and rope work beyond knots and fixes. 🌟 Energy & Electrical Systems: We learned all about the power systems on the boat and how to use energy most effectively. We recognize this project is ambitious, so being prepared is critical.
